Ever since I got ceramic coated headers on my Nova, they're the only kind of coating I use. No wrapping, no paints, no other coatings -- just ceramic coating. Keeps heat in the engine bay way down, it looks good, it lasts a long time, doesn't rust. For an idea, my Nova dropped 46°F under the hood after putting ceramic coated headers on. It's really worth the extra money.

That piston demo was a bit dodgy don't you think??? To start with he held the flame a lot further away with the coated pistons- away from the hottest part of the flame. Then the editing didn't allow you to see if he held the flame on as long as he did with the non- coated piston (although that may have been done on purpose). Next time someone tries this on, you might want to remind the person that your viewers aren't that silly and a shady demo will in tern make the product look shady. Disappointing- was hoping to see a fair and honest test to see how good it realty works. Think I might stick with the coatings available from the piston manufacturers for now...

Holding it further away is actually making the test more difficult. It heats the piston more slowly giving more time for the heat to transfer to the bottom. It actually makes the coating more impressive.

@@emmanuelmeris5841 Right, so like I said coatings are useless for the average enthusiast just an extra cost that can be spent elsewhere. That is the general feeling most have about coating and other treatments. When professional teams need a tenth or two, these things will give them advantage. The same rule applies when it counts you'll be 1-2 tenths faster than your competition given everything is equal. But most people aren't competing for anything because they are scared they will break something. To finish first you must first finish, meaning cutting corners ensures you won't finish.... It's a choice, either do it or don't do it and STFU because it doesn't make you look any smarter by saying you won't do it.

A few years ago I was rebuilding a tractor for the home farm, and just for shits and giggles, decided to have the pistons coated. Wasn't looking for better performance, just thought it might start better in the cold if the piston wasn't sinking away as much heat from compression. Now I didn't have a "control", and the engine was already badly in need of an overhaul, but it starts better than when it was new, and is still running well. So was I crazy for trying it?

I agree with many comments before me ceramic coating definitely works but the heat test performed in this video is not an Apple to Apple comparison first the piston heads were not the same so that may of have help make the difference even more noticeable and the torch distance was not at the same distance when heating up the piston head without the coating it was closer and distributed to the entire piston unlike the ceramic coated heads

So? If you know coatings work then flawed testing means nothing but only an example of typically happens inside any engine not EXACTLY like it happens. Only F1 teams know what's going on inside an engine, everybody else is just guessing at it.

The problem is, metal expands under heat but ceramic doesn't(or with a very small amount). Under stress the coating may loose its adherence and may come off as fragments. That will cause a serious disaster.

It's a well documented problem with coated extractors for example.... It's not really a problem on N/A or supercharged applications but on a turbo vehicle it can damage the turbos when chunks start coming off the pipes internally. When it's done on pistons it just tends to gradually wear away and isn't an issue usually. I think this is an inherent problem with coating pipes. I don't think it really matters who does it, it will happen eventually on all coated pipes. Sure, some shops will do a better job than others- but you can't claim one shop in the U.K has it nutted out better than the rest of the world. Don't believe their advertising hype dude

That's a really cool process and clearly has superior heat and wear resistance. But to be fair to powder coating for lower temperature cosmetic applications, the only solvents that I have affect it drastically (assuming proper preparation and curing) are methanol and dichloromethane (methylene chloride)...which happen to be the main components of powder stripper.
@mhamma6560
@mhamma6560 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, way overboard on the whole engine Pistons, headers, turbo parts, sure. Low heat, stick with polished, chrome, or PC. Heck, even automotive paint and clear work well. If you're going "pretty" on an engine, it's not getting solvents on it. If you're a performance oriented only, you're not worrying about being pretty. Strict performance increases only.
@Visionery1

Interesting! The first law of thermodynamics, also known as Law of Conservation of Energy, states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; energy can only be transferred or changed from one form to another. This raises an issue or two, not allowed for in the original engine design: during normal combustion the heat which would've been absorbed by the piston and transferred to the connecting rod and engine oil now remains above the piston, increasing the heat of the combustion chamber, valves and cylinder head cooling galleries. I see potential pre-ignition, overheating cylinder heads and overheating exhaust valves.

Reading the comments I'd like to see you do another video to do like a mythbusters episode to disprove some of what I see. I work in a lab. Putting the blowtorch on a stand for the same time on each piston to ensure the test is the same for each piston. Then measuring each temp at timed intervals over a long period of time you could create a graph to show what's going on. There are many variables that need to be sorted out aswell but I'm not going into it now. I was a powdercoater for years and ceramic is a far better product as powdercoating is just plastic really. Could you do a chip and scratch test aswell.

Saw a review of it recently on one of the top drag racing channels that I watch called demonology, together with the Kooks headers on his Dodge Demon. They were much cooler than normal and everyone is really impressed with jet hot, so I looked them up after watching the vid and says that its a product made by Kooks and is designed for the aerospace industry. One of my next mods is going to be a set of long tubes for my Challenger as well, and have been planning on going with Kooks. After hearing about it, I searched the web and the headers typically go for around 1200 to $1600. But then have to add around 350 for the coating. Although I found one for around $1,000, and am shocked that they are so inexpensive. They are the 1 3/4 instead of 1 7/8, but that is still dirt cheap for them. (Especially with the coating and is a bargain). I have the link if anyone is interested, and are for the 6.1 & 6.4 hemis only...mxamotorsports.com/product/jet-hot-headers-6-1-6-4l-hemi/

no. not at all. i read through articles and subjects that are of my interest and see the videos. then see that some people think they can do in a small outfit what you need 100k worth of equipment to do. to do pistons they should be treated under a vacuum with a plasma spray. i didnt know that until a few years ago when i visited a company completely by chance and they make the equipment to do specialist coatings and ceramic coatings. i spoke to a engineer who was building up some equipment that looked like it was from star trek or back to the future to do specialist coatings and it was to be sent to the USA. i would love to think that i could do a quality ceramic coating on pistons for cheap and it wouldnt burn off or flake off after a very short while. funny i never heard about paint on ceramic coatings when i worked in aerospace- usually parts would be sent away to specialist companys with expensive equipment and knowledge to get it right. plenty of snake oil salesmen around. hardly any manufacturing or specialist companys doing anything remotely technical or scientific in australia. no car manufacturing, anything more technical than a nut and bolt is imported.i just wonder where the cutting edge technology is in australia.

Question... I can see how coating a piston head helps with heat dissipation, but how much will coating a piston head or perhaps even an intake and exhaust valve help with the carbon build up, which also gets baked on, which occurs from blow-by? Has this been considered and tested as well? Can the coating help reduce or even prevent baked on carbon deposits on these components? Due to emission regulations, the blow-by will always get sent back into the PCV/EGR systems to have the blow-by burnt off, but will the coating stop carbon after product from accumulating on the pistons and intake\exhaust valves as well?

Carbon isn't usually that big of problem. It can be burnt off, or chemically taken off. But with gasoline direct injection, the carbon buildup from the pcv is way worse. Maybe coating is the way to go.

Have you thought to use a pair of type K thermocouples and digital displays for your demonstration? A side by side comparison with the same flame heating both to confirm you have a well matched pair of TC's then ceramic coat one and test the pair again. A 1/4" x 3" SST TC probe with a nicely rounded tip should take your coating without any sharp edges to worry about. Just a thought while I'm sitting here with a pair of Omron E5CK temperature controllers in front of me for inspiration. I've tried 8 thermocouples with excellent results, unfortunately they're all naked virgin TC's. Would be nice to see some solid numbers to go with your interesting and excellent looking coating. I'm considering ceramic for expansion chambers on chainsaws and dirt bikes. Thanks for the video. Good day.

On the piston coatings... how do you account for the different thermal expansion rates? If you keep the piston at a lower temp during operation this means it's not reaching it's full size inside the skirt.. compression, etc ?

The temperature gun cannot measure on very shiny surfaces......Meaning the uncoated piston is about 200 Celsius on the top as underneath. The coated pistons are about 80 Celsius, if the surface is measurable with temperature gun correctly . And almost tge same underneath. That means the coating seems to Block the heat coming in the aluminium of the piston. And therefore less energy transferred to the oil of the engine.

I'd love to know how they managed to bend the laws of thermodynamics and have the down side from the piston, wich is farther from the heat source, at a higher temperature than the top side that it's facing the flame itself.

Question: When you coat engine parts or engine blocks. That's aluminium ect. The parts or the engine loses its ability to release heat? I did see a video of a intake manifold coated vs not. 30min cool down time the coated part was 50c+ abow the non coated.

Can this be applied to plastic parts as well. Coz if you can apply it to plastics, then it can virtually increase it's heat resistance.

I could be wrong but I'm not sure it's purely heat that ruins seals and degrades rotaries but also just a lack of lubrication for the seals - which ceramic coating AFAIK would not help with. As another mentioned I am sure Mazda and other auto manufacturers tried it and clearly nothing really came of it. Would be cool to see though no doubt, I'd imagine some shaving of the housing to make up for the coating may have to be done? Not sure how thick it ends up but I'd imagine the tolerancing on the housings is pretty serious.

Ceramic piston faces have been 'standard' in locomotive engines for years. Their idea of a 'coating' is a wafer of ceramic attached to the piston face. The entire intent is keeping compressive heating of the air/fuel mixture in the mix, and not letting the piston leach away heat. Don't recall if the cylinder walls had ceramic sleeves, but it wouldn't surprise me. Sometimes the best high-performance ideas come from ho-hum everyday things like trains or a bus. How many stops and starts every day for a bus? That needs good brakes, a solid transmission and reliable engine, right? Same with a locomotive: if they can't be run economically at 1,200+ hp, another way would be found long ago.

Thermodynamic question, so if the Piston is taking less heat, does that mean the engine will run more efficiently as the fuel is burned and more of the energy pushed and exited through exhaust? Since the heat has to go somewhere?

How exactly does the piston top only reach 50c while the bottom is 250c? Using a laser for reading temperature is not very accurate due to different surfaces/composition .. Try this again with a thermal camera.

Coz it is high-carbon material, not a steel. So it is worse temp- and electric- transmitter than the steel. So the surface is cooling much faster than the core. But, as the 'internal' surface is bigger than the face, I do believe it should cool even faster than the core (the sides are in fact radiator i.e. heat-spreader). So is my logic, obviously here we face something else.

I would have been happy for a fair comparison between the non- coated and coated pistons. Notice how much further away the flame was held with the coated pistons??? Well away from the hottest part of the flame at the end of the blue cone in the middle whereas the non- coated piston had the flame held at the exact place I'm referring to. Also, with the editing it was impossible to tell if the flame was held on the piston crown for the same amount of time. Of coarse the longer one holds the flame to the piston the more heat will transfer through to the underside. It's not rocket science
