Part 12! Ian Roussel fabricates a large piece of sheetmetal and makes it fully custom for the rear of his 1968 VW Radical Custom VW Bug. He fits the metal up, cuts it, and uses his break to get the desired strength and then welds it into place, all in his garage!
The backstory...
Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date. 😎

I think I learn something new in almost all Ian's videos. That trick with adding the bead using the break was pretty slick. Huge time save with the same effect as rolling beads. Thanks ks for the great tip!

Really like the sheetmetal episodes (remember what you find easy some of us marvel at hehe) I would also love to see some of your finishing up welding (do you just keep getting them closer and closer then grind? ) assume it will be later episodes tho :). Hello Ian. What looks to be the underlining philosophy of most of your design, fabrication & installation is the KISS Philosophy - Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS). Not much can go wrong if this philosophy is adopted. Perfect example of this is this rear support structure. Keep KISSin' Ian. Cheers

To make a soft bend in sheet metal place your sheet in the brake but before clamping place the largest diameter piece of pipe on top and clamp the pipe with the benders top clamp. Pull up on the bender then reposition the piece of metal and repeat until you get the arc you want.

I told my daughter, AZie, that I would ask when you were going to attach the COE to the VW, but no one likes a smart alek. Tools make the man and that is why I'll never be a sheet metal guy, but I still might buy a welder if I see one at a garage sale. You amaze me when you walk away without cuts after handling the sheet metal. I own many pairs of gloves for occasions like that. I would mail you a few pair if I thought you would wear them. Thanks for sharing your efforts on your projects. One day I might actually learn something, thick as I am.
