I heard a slightly different version of the Motorhead story. Chris said he asked Lemmy if he could join the band, and Lemmy said no. Told Chris he was too crazy for Motorhead. Imagine being too crazy for Motorhead.

Man! you've been able to pull some real nuggets of gold from Chris, this is the most detail I've heard him go into about early W.A.S.P stuff. I personally think Sarah has been able to nail him down on his memories of time lines and stuff...... Possibly for memoires or a biography? Hope so!

I'm so glad Chris got cleaned up and has his life together. Of all the people from that era that probably should have already been gone most would have thought Chris at the top of the list. Randy Rhoads inspired me Chris Holmes squeezed my fuckin nuts and made me grab an axe and play. I love that dude and you giving him a voice is epic. You are the BEST INTERVIEWER OF THE SCENE HANDS DOWN. Jason Green does a nice 2nd. As a Texas native I salute you Full in Bloom.

Got that right. He was never the most progressive player but you can hear him developing through those first 4 albums (Live... not included) and his fluidity through position changes is amazing. Unique tone too, which is always the hallmark of a great player. I'm sure the set-ups were pretty simple but Chris and Randy had really great, thick, detailed tones that I haven't heard since. Restless Gypsy is the pinnacle for me - still does it for me even though I bought the album when it was first released.

I agree.but, at the time they came out, it was such a literal meat grinder for those LA bands, it makes sense that Lawless would be a major control freak when it came to the band, and it’s sound. WASP is one of the only LA bands that had nothing in common with the rest of the LA scene. The only other would be Slayer, who were smart enough to head to the Bay Area. When it comes to making something like a band go from local to international, you have to be an asshole. Look to Mustaine. He is still a major dictator when it comes to Megadeth, and it’ll never change. And this attitude has made him metal royalty. Also, check out my version of Hold on to my heart! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gb-TZdyYzrrMcYU.html

@@allendean9807 that’s not true. Blackie and mustaine are narcissists. And they never got as big as bands like Metallica and Pantera who had members that weren’t a holes. Being a narcissistic jerk holds you back cause your defective personality holds back your art as the art is never better than the person.
@allendean9807
@allendean9807 2 жыл бұрын
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 perhaps, but i look at the result of their drive, over their possible/probable character flaws- if Mustaine hadn’t been as driven to create the best metal band, there’d be not Mensa/Friedman lineup. And I’ll have to disagree with you about Metallica, respectfully. Jason Newsted is one of the nicest guys in the world. I had the opportunity to hang with him on occasion just before he got the Metallica gig. We took a couple rafting trips in Northern California, as Flotsam were courting Michael Spencer. That band treated Newsted horribly, because they could. But one could argue that abuse led to the creation of greatness…. All musicians with large sales recordings are driven to the point of ego which separates them from those who do not have those sales. I’ve met countless fantastic musicians, heard amazing songs, which went nowhere. That ego, that drive can often mean the difference between an album no one hears to a Rust in Peace.
@smkxodnwbwkdns8369
@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 2 жыл бұрын
@@allendean9807 Jason was a big geek who wouldn’t stop behaving like an over-excited fanboy and they hazed him for it. Was it abuse, probably, but I wouldn’t paint that with the same brush as what Dave Mustaine is which is a narcissistic *** with little integrity. Metallica had a great reputation as nice and generous people who were anti-rock star ego-such as the punk scene was at the time-and helped a lot of people. Conversely blackie has hurt a lot of people and only cares about himself. No one says that about Metallica or a number of big bands. My point is the philosophy that you have to be a selfish a hole to be successful is wrong. In fact there’s evidence it holds you back. You can make it in spite of personality defects but it’s better to be nice.

I truly believe Blackie Lawless is all of the jerk he is described as being, but we’re talking about the band WASP. They were never a crazy successful band. The money the other guys think they’ve been cheated out of is probably far less in reality. Most artists of this era made next to no money on album sales for the first couple of records because of the deals they signed. Streaming has killed any chances of significant income for artists these days and for the foreseeable future. But...I’d be pissed, too. It’s just human nature
