KK Downing is a phenomenal guitar player and songwriter. He is one reason why Judas Priest is one of the greatest Heavy Metal bands ever.

Yes K.K. Is important in Priest history, but 90% of the best, most iconic guitar solos are owned by Mr. Glenn Tipton. K.K. Is an awesome guitarist, but Tipton plays solos that just bleed with emotion. That’s a talent you don’t learn, you’re either born with it or not not. Glenn’s solo in “Beyond The Realms Of Death” is my favorite solo in any ballad. Tipton also has another brilliant solo in “Dreamer/Deceiver” on the “Sad Wings Of Destiny” album. I still think that SWOD is their best album, having so many masterpiece works on one record. “Victim Of Changes”, “The Ripper” and “Dreamer/Deceiver are some of my favorite Priest songs. It’s ironic because Michael Schenker’s solo in the live version of “Rock Bottom” on “ Strangers In The Night” live album is my favorite guitar solo of all time. Schenker was such a natural for the guitar, putting so much feeling and drama in his guitar work.

@KaseNash59 yes, they have many good songs over the years, but I just think that SWOD has the best collection of songs. I also think that the music they made back then was smarter and more complex. It bordered on being progressive rock, rather than just pure metal.
@RoarOfWolverine

@@jorgeromero8909 that’s funny because I have always thought that Tipton gets more emotion into his solos than KK. As a guitar player myself, I realize that there are some guys you only have to figure out the notes and rhythm to nail and i could always figure out all the notes to a KK solo and make it sound just like his, but when it came to a Glenn, it was another story. It’s not just playing the notes when it comes to Tipton. Even after you’ve got all the notes figured out, then it’s practicing putting the right amount of bend on a note and the complete dynamic of the life of the note. The. There is getting the staccato notes he likes to play right. With Glenn, it’s all art, like he’s painting every note on canvas. Please,know that I am not so arguing with you at all. I’m not saying you’re wrong either. I am actually pointing out how art can be so subjective that two people can see or hear something at polar opposite ends. Music is an art and art is what a masterpiece says to you? The artist is just trying to communicate a feeling to the listener, so there is no right or wrong, it’s just what that does for you as an individual.

@@RoarOfWolverine I think what made Judas Priest really stand out from other hard rock and metal bands from the time was their guitar playing being such a guitar centric group. The power behind that was how different Glenn and K.K. were as players. Glenn is arguably the more formally schooled musician out of the two and he would become the principal songwriter. That must have come from years of playing piano which his mother taught him to play so he would have known about sight reading, scales, modes etc and in doing so developed a highly articulate and complex classically influenced solo style. The fact that he in his 40's was able to become highly adept at sweep picking and use it extensively on Painkiller and subsequent works by Priest to match all the Yngwie Malmsteens, Marty Friedmans, Michael Angelo Batios, Jason Beckers and Tony MacAlpines of the shred era is beyond comprehension. Downing was always more bluesy influenced and greater at improvising. He learned to play by emulating the great works of rock and blues guitarists such as Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, B.B. King etc. You could see the stark contrast between both players and Glenn's lead work was always noticeably more fluid and articulate. K.K. even admitted in an interview that reading music was never really something he explored much. That said, there are some solos where K.K. absolutely blows Glenn out of the water such as Rapid Fire, Steeler, Jawbreaker, Blood Red Skies, Between The Hammer And The Anvil and Judas Rising. Such a dynamic of two sharply contrasting players is just mindblowing and makes the band all the more exciting, especially to metalheads who know about guitar. Something similar could be said about Iron Maiden's guitarists Dave Murray and Adrian Smith in that Dave Murray is more diatonic in his phrasing and is a master at legato which he uses primarily to execute his soloing whilst Adrian Smith is more bluesy and favours alternate picking.

I met Priest when I was 16 during the 'World Vengeance Tour'. I actually asked Glenn about Michael Schenker and the Scorpions, and how most people thought that K.K. was the main lead player in Priest... Also talked about Ronnie James Dio, which Glenn thought was a great singer, but said that he didn't like his lyrics much, lol. My friends (bandmates) and I actually drove Glenn to the (house) party, and the rest of the band was there. I couldn't believe that they would actually come to a house party... It was very surreal at the time.

@@michaelmiglino6512 I am sure that he remembers. The thing is that bands often end up using song writing credits as negotiation tools because the writers earn extra money. So, for instance, they will negotiate that all songs will be credited to Tom, Dick and Harry to make sure they get equal payment, even if Tom was really the only guy to write it. He has to say 'I can't remember' because if he told the truth it would expose one of the worst kept secrets in the music business, and MAY end up opening a door for litigation, either because it would violate a NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) they've signed, or for other damages related to who is owed what.

Michael Schenker was obviously drunk and spouting off his stupid mouth, that is if this conversation ever actually happened. Uli used the whammy bar as a tool to colour and add expression.
