Unchecked PASS alarm leads to confirmation bias that the alarm means nothing. Eventually leads to ignoring alarm as insignificant noise pollution, resulting in catastrophic consequences.

For crying out loud you firefighting experts. Cant you ever notice the good things they did ? No you cant because you all don't have a say in your own department so you come on here pretending to be National Fire Academy Fire instructors. What is a PASS alarm
@lindanwfirefighter4973
@lindanwfirefighter4973 Жыл бұрын
@@jayasmrmore3687 it makes a loud alarm sound when we stand still to long. It is meant to alert other firefighters to a down firefighter. It has lights that go off when it does. It can also be set off manually if needed during an emergency. Again so others can find and rescue the firefighter in trouble. Problem is people put their packs down and forget to turn the pass alarm off so it thinks the firefighter is down and starts alarming. Problem with that is after a while firefighters begin to just ignore the sound. It is kinda like crying wolf. After a while people start to assume the alarm is just a false alarm and no one goes to investigate it.

The fire is out, BUT .....Nozzleman with no SCBA. Engine parked in direction of smoke. Two firefighters going through smoke to car. Opposing streams. PASS constantly going off. owner of car backing up a firefighter. These things all need to be addressed befor eanother fire.
@wilsjane
@wilsjane Жыл бұрын
It all looked well organised by self motivation to me. While the nozzleman was not using his SCBA, he was upwind from the smoke and getting water on the exposure can never be too soon. The second crew, seeing the exposure well covered, dealt with the car, so their jet was diffused. Their was little smoke, mainly water vapor, and the second crew were wearing SCBA. The guy who was helping to prevent the line from kinking, knew what he was doing and may have been a retired firefighter for all we know. The pass alarms are another story and should not have been left sounding. I have heard of a case where another member of the team was disciplined for cancelling the nozzleman's alarm. The whole thing needs a rethink, before someone ends up in need of assistance and everyone is ignoring what is happening to him. We always criticize firefighters for standing around and watching things burn, so we should give credit where it is due. One thing that always amazes me is the reluctance of combined interior, exterior attack in the US. While firing a deck cannon through the windows while crews are inside would be highly dangerous, I have seen guys ignoring flames from a window entering the roofspace, rather than use their line to put the eves and window frame out. Combined attacks are common here in the UK, but they require proper training and constant communication between the crews.

I'm glad this member of "the media" did stay across the street and merely film without getting involved or obstructing the firefighters and police officers, so kudos there. Far too many with cell phones want to get right in the faces of working police and emergency response personnel, even to the point of arguing and harrassing them with unnecessary comments and threats just for the pure enjoyment of getting a reaction that they can post online. The 1st amendment gone wrong.
@childofcascadia
@childofcascadia Жыл бұрын
Video taping shit has nothing to do with the 1st amendment. The 1st amendment does one thing and one thing only. It prevents the government from *criminally* charging you for words alone. You can still be sued taken to civil court by private entities/people for libel/slander if you say demonstratably false defaming statements. You can still be charged if you impede a rescue or firefighting operation. You can still be evicted from a private enterprise if you use speech they dont like. Publishers can choose not to print your books. All it does is prevent the government itself from criminally charging you. I think like 90% of this country needs better civics lessons. I keep hearing "free speech/1st amendment" but the first amendment doesnt mean "you can say whatevver you wan with no consequences." People can and do get sued for libel/slander in civil court, and you can be evicted or otherwise removed from a non governmental entity for your speech.

The bald guy in shorts in command doesn't actually get too close to the fire and also stays upwind. Second crew dons full gear and attacks the car fire. There's just, my God people nitpick. Also, the PASS alarms going off. Literally everyone fighting the fire or protecting the exposure is full view. They're not ignoring them, they hear them. But literally everyone is full view. If they had gone in the house to fight a structure fire and were ignoring the PASS system that's a problem. Not turning them off during a car fire isn't breeding bad habits.

This is a joke right? It takes WEEKS to get water into 50' of hose, no one has a pack on from the first in engine, SOMEONES PASS IS ACTIVE FOR LIKE 5 FUCKING MINUTES (they must teach this at the NJ state level because it is ever present in videos from the place), they have dueling lines hitting each other in the face, losing helmets because no one knows what a chin strap is, OIC is standing closer than the nozzleman without a single stitch of proper PPE. This is a genuine, Grade A, Cluster Fuck. On top of it all, its a car. The house might be exposed but its not on fire. If you put the fire out then there is no longer an exposure problem. Playing exposure protection is WAY overthinking the problem here. Just put the fire out! If the siding was already lighting off or sliding down the side of the house then thats different but thats not the case here.

If you are a child: Its a thermal camera to show temperature. Thermal cameras show from cold to hot in varying degrees of color. The darker blue, the colder. Green is cool. Shades of red, yellow, white are the hottest. So, you can see the spots where the fire made it hot even after the firefighters got the fire out.

All these armchair firefighters pissing and moaning about things, about which they are clearly uneducated. As has been pointed out, the first engine defending the exposure was the right call, as the second engine was right behind them. Also, for those who complain about the amount of time it took for them to get water on the fire, it's not a snap-of-the-fingers kind of thing. You don't just grab a hose and start spraying. The engineer has to get the engine into "pump" mode and pressurize the lines. These things take time. And for those complaining about the chief just walking around with his radio, he's not just "walking around", he is constantly assessing the situation and making sure that the firefighters have the resources the need to put out the fire. Now, had the second engine been further away, the first engine could have hooked to a hydrant and pulled a second line. But the chief, with his experience and training, knew that this was not necessary, and in the end the job got done, and the house has only minimal damage. So if you're going to complain about something, do yourself a favor and learn something about whatever it is you're complaining about, lest you make yourself look like a complete idiot. Oh, and before anyone asks: I am a former volunteer firefighter, so I might know a thing or two about this stuff.

You have an answer for the Chief being on the nozzle? Love to hear it. With you being a former volunteer, you must of went to tens of fire. (P.S. there isn’t a good answer)
@ritirons2726
@ritirons2726 2 жыл бұрын
As a former volunteer you should know the way it all works then, correct? You would have no reason to debate anyones comments because you would understand that some of decisions made were not necessarily the best choice, correct? There’s no reason for a chief to be walking around the scene without gear using a portable radio. He responded in command vehicle. As a former volunteer you should know that that is the location the IC works from, not walking around the scene. I’m sorry but not putting your gear on shows nothing but laziness and sets a poor example for your members. The member that should be “making sure that the firefighters have all the resources they need” is operating the nozzle of the first hand line. Your former years surely taught you not to attack a heavily involved vehicle fire without an SCBA and proper turnout gear, right? Speaking of SCBA, your past training has taught you that it takes time to engage the pump and stretch the line, get it to operating pressure, etc. So if it takes time, then I would think that officer should have had time to put on an SCBA and be ready to work, would that be correct? And getting water at this particular incident should not take time. The radio reports confirmed they’d be going to work as soon as they arrived on scene. It’s all very simple. Setting the brake, engaging the pump and opening the tank to pump valve should only take seconds. There was no line to flake out or any long stretch to make. A single length of hose from tank water doesn’t get any easier or faster. You are right though, in the end the job got done and there was minimal damage to the house. However, it’s the minor details that get forgotten, such as not wearing gear properly or opposing hose streams, that change a seemingly routine vehicle fire into anything but in a fraction of a second. But I’m sure you already knew that as a former volunteer.

@@ritirons2726 as a former volunteer in that town I know a few things that you don't. The IC in the traffic vest is the department chief. He works for the town's public works. He was at a jobsite in town, left work, and was on scene in seconds. White helmet or no white helmet, all the guys there know who he is. All of the members live in the town, which is a whopping 4 square miles. There was a critique after this fire, like every working incident, and The department's two stations are unstaffed; they rely completely on home response. Every firefighter you see in this video dropped what they were doing, got to the station, and got multiple pieces on the street fully staffed, including the tower ladder that turned out to be not needed. If one of the chief officers is needed for initial staffing, then that's what they do. Just like every other volunteer department in America. Many of the guys you see here have been firemen (yeah, I said firemen) longer than you or I have been alive. Like my 79 year-old father, who responded from home, drove the first-arriving engine, and got things in service. With his gear on. I guarantee he has socks that have seen more fire than you have. He's been department chief and officer off and on since the late 60s. He, and the other over-70 guys in this department, have taken every piece of training ever offered to them, so it isn't a case of "one year of experience repeated 50 times over." They don't have a choice; there are younger members (mostly the children of the older members), but the town is simply too expensive to live in to support a population of younger people with spare time to recruit members from. They got the job done well. Without your help.

It makes sense to have someone with SCBA as the second guy and someone without as the first. There was also no need at all to spray the house before attacking the fire. Take away the flames and the heat is gone. The siding was damaged because of the heat but not on fire. Second engine goes way to close to the vehicle, no need for that, it's just putting yourself into danger.

Truck saved my life tho. If it was a car id be dead. But if I ever see a vid of a green truck on fire and a brown dude with an afro ill know its you. And ill be like its that dude from youtube.

While SCBA use is definitely something to watch, criticizing the rusty water is kind of uncalled for. That money simply doesn't exist in most volunteer districts though, so they make the best of what they have.
