No-one's batteries have rare earths in them, except for one manufacturer 15 years ago that put some ytterbium in their LFP cells. So the battery part of that is a pointless claim (except of course that clueless articles claim they do and countering nonsense has become important). No rare earths in the motors presumably means they are using electromagnets throughout, not permanent magnets (as they almost all have neodymium in). I think that's a trend in motor design. PM motors are very good as you get rotor energised without using any energy nor brushes but they do have coasting losses. Being able to turn the rotor off fixes that. Complicated tradeoffs in which is most efficient overall. For powertools PM defo wins. For cars I think it depends on the details.

Love it, one of the best looking EVs out there for me and certainly the best from the established western manufacturers. The exterior is a good combo of modern and interesting but not too fussy and the interior looks practical and useable with decent tech. It looks really clean and fresh but also recognisably a car with familiar controls and layouts that are proven and work. (great review BTW :o)

I loved my old Scenic RX4, it was perfect as an all-rounder for my job in the countryside. I'm looking for an EV now, and hope that Renault will release a Scenic E-Tech with dual motors, increased ride height and possibly a rugged-ish exterior: at this point the only options seem to be the Solterra/bZ4x (too inefficient) and the future EX30 Cross Country (too small).

bZ4X AWD was almost efficient as the Model Y RWD in the big Norwegian Sumer range test (141 Wh/km vs 131) so they are hardly inefficient. Smallish usable capacity yes, inefficient no.

Nice design outside and in once again, space is thought out giving the car lots more compartments to store things in. I agree with the boot design, I feel it could of come out from being flat for a more rounded look which could assist with the overall aerodynamics & the aesthetics.

I like Renault but there are some big questions not addressed here: 1. UK specs & pricing, plus the big ‘elephant’ projected depreciation ? 2. Heat pump as standard on UK versions (big mistake missing it off Meganes - had to add Iconic)? 3. Infotainment screen - will it be scaled down in UK (like Meganes)?

If I had a family I might have considered one had it been available... but I don't and it wasn't so that's that. Arrogant, pricey design houses that break and cost the earth, this however I think it could break the trend coming straightout of France or most likely the automotive Samsung factory in Asia. If I had some spawn of my own and needed to haul my ungrateful brats around with me then this would be perfect. It's 100% for families and not for the couple that enjoy a childless lifestyle. Until Renault make the Renault Wind EV or Until we see what the 5 has to offer then I'm sure this car would make sense for those people who are self entitled about adding to the global growth of endless human beings

Well.. we own the second Grand Scenic, and we use it daily for school runs and city driving. It is a very reliable car having over 300k km on an 1.5dci. But looking at today's range of Renault cars, I cant choose another spacious, light weight, easy to use, flexible seats, confortable Renault. The large head room, large windows, enormous cargo space, confortable and adjustable seats (specially in the back) are all part of the recipe we love the Scenic. We also own a Nissan X-trail and I can confirm that the SUV is far less spacious and confortable. And note that space does not have to come from a large sized car, the mid-size Megane chassie was enough for a family of 4. We traveled all Europe with the Scenic, but today I have no option to replace it, unfortunatly. 😢

I like the new "row of medium sized physical buttons in one place to control everything else" trope automakers are doing now. It may not be artistically daring but its functional and simple enough to fit with any dash design. Once you learn the buttons after driving for a week its fast and easy to use without looking.

I used to own a Renault Scenic .It was comfortable to drive and fairly solidly built but everything electric on that vehicle would fail at some point. The electric windows would each fail once a year and each cost a fortune to fix - in the end I learnt to replace the parts myself. The thought of buying a EV from Renault gives me the shivers.

Perfect size, practicality, interior, exterior look. The only question marks are price and depreciation. Will it compete favorably with Polestar 4, Niro EV, Audi Q4, etc., for what is expected to be in similar price range (or slightly less, but likely with steeper depreciation).

Doesn't look like it is very tall, unless he is very tall. Renault seem to be producing some great electric cars right now. I'd certainly consider one, and prefer this to the E Megane due to the increased rear space.

Here goes nothing... Hey Jack, any word the Renault's V2G capability? I took myself over to Gridserve in Essex for the Mégane launch and was very well received. My only issue was the black hole around what was going on with the Mégane coming with V2G, as per the pre release information. I mean, why drop (conversation) ~£10k on home battery storage when I can better use that money for the car, and get a many-fold bigger battery as well? Thus, will this scenic come with a V2G or V2H capability? ...along with the all important OEM's bi-directional charger thrown in?? Any snippets of information around when we can expect to start seeing/getting this next evolution of new tech on thr cars would be wonderful 👍 Past that, love ya work. Ya second only to Roberts ABN and Beard meets food 🤣

V2G is something that has been talked about by car manufacturers and energy suppliers as a win-win for everyone, the technology exists and tests have shown it works well... and yet it has stalled and the excitement been allowed to die. A great shame.

@@broadsword6650 Absolutely! I freely admit it was over a decade ago now, but I seem to recall even the Zoe was touted with it. The down side was no one was really sure if betamax or VHS was going to win the day, and well, I for one didn't find that the Zoe worked for my needs, and then... what about the actual bidirectional charger? Fast forward, what, let's say six or seven years and Mégane was definitely touted a V2 capable. I'm 90% sure both Johnny Smith and 'our man' Bobby Lou even said the same in the press release and/or their respective test drives, but! Is it available on the Mégane? Nope. Thus, is it coming on this Scenic or have Renault (and others) simply given up on this technology? ...as a layman in this field/industry, I don't understand what the delay is. Being able to get an inverter to flip the power outta ya cigarette lighter to power ya laptop etc has been around for bloody ages! So using the same basic premise to have ya car output 7kw to power ya house during the day, and charge over night (key: from the same bidirectional charger) shouldn't be beyond the car manufacturers and/or the manufacturer of the car chargers - should it? Yet, other than the wallbox quasar 2 and some VERY! Muted suggestions that Kia, Hyundai and Renault just need to "switch it on" via an over the air update, the general public is left looking at their belly button fluff 🤣

@@matbowden9156 It seems to be an issue for the utility companies rather than the car companies. Vehicle-to-load (for a single appliance rather than a whole house), is available in many EVs, but vehicle-to-grid has not yet been implemented, despite having been possible with Nissan Leaf for years. I know Octopus has successfully trialed it, and the customers involved in the trial say it worked with no problems and it saved them a lot of money. The pandemic seems to have derailed the trial, so fingers crossed it can get back on track soon.
@matbowden9156

@@broadsword6650 ...be nice to get a Quasar 2 wallbox vs the one that was supplied on the leaf trial though, wouldn't it? I don't think the bottle neck is the utility company myself, more the "red tape" but this is of course pure speculation If you are connected to the grid you've already got a standing charge. If you consume energy, you get charged. So it stands to reason that should you not actually be consuming any energy (you went on holiday for example) you would still get hit with the standing charges, but no (or very little) usage, for keeping ya fridge running, perhaps. Equally, if ya car is powering ya house, so V2H, what does ya utility company care? As long as there is no risk of feeding back into the grid itself (you have to be able to isolate your solar panels) so you don't electrocute anyone, but I'd "guess" V2G takes that up a level, and involves "all the red tape" as that would allow the utility company to set up VPP (Virtual Power Plants) where loads of EV's are strung together and used in periods of high demand. Again, our man Bobby has spoken about this (years ago) so my "guess" is red tape vs technical limitations But! Putting in a wallbox/charger at home is still what, a grand? Probably two these days... So why put in a regular charger if (example) six months from now, I can simply buy the car with the bidirectional charger thrown in as part of sale? Anyway, I feel like we want/are asking the same thing from slightly different vantage points. Let's see if anyone else knows more than us? 👍

@@matbowden9156 I'm having a charger fitted next month. Cost is just over a grand, including fitting. I imagine that it is red tape, as you say, rather than serious technical problems. The cars are ready, the utility companies can make it work, it's just a case of having all the different bits of the supply network talking to one another and agreeing that it's a good to go. But I've been watchingFully Charged and others talking about this for about a decade, have waited for this to be sorted out, and have delayed going EV because of it. I'm not waiting any longer because there's no sign of it being sorted any time soon. If and when it does happen I'll have to spend more cash to upgrade my wallbox

Why are EVs so allergic to 3 individual seats in the back (with ISOfix)? It was the default setup for the Scenic, Peugeot 3008 and still is for petrol versions of these models. No EV is currently offering a solution for families of 5.These families have to go for a 7 seater EV which are way too expensive and still dont offer individual seats! Very big disappointment regarding the Scenic.

Renault have always been innovative with their tech, but it is a shame they've followed the SUV/Crossover trope when they clearly had the opportunity here to reinvent the MPV. I had an original Scenic when my children were small, it was such a useful car. All tech aside though, that clever glass in the sunroof is a potentially expensive fault waiting to happen...

First impressions good. However, parts of the car do raise questions. . What is real world performance like? If the glass roof cracks, how difficult and exoensive is it to replace (thinking about falling branches and hail storms). The middle screen console is directed too much to the driver. Can it be swivled towards the passenger. With the large cockpit dislay, the middle infotainment screen looks oddly overkill. I just feel like ripping itboff the dashboard. Can the center infotainment screen be removed and the carbsokely operated in the cockpit screen only? Despite the clever explanation of the the car motor compnents on the front, does it have a front boot? Does it have airco? Does itbsupport any form of V2G, V2L or V2H? Does itbsupport autonomous safety features? Is the turning circle good? Etc.
