Niu is the world’s leading electric scooter company making almost 1 million electric scooters each year. Elliot travelled to Changzhou in China to go behind the scenes at the Niu factory to see how they produce 4,000 scooters per day for China and also a large, growing export market.
This busy factory produces Niu's three different models and, although the GTS-Pro moped is their most popular, they are working on an electric motorbike, an electric mountain bike and even a 3-wheeled scooter taxi!
Elliot explores each area of this simple, fast and efficient factory, following the rapid process from raw frame to finished product. He also takes the NIU Aero bike for a spin and is the first person outside of the company to try their prototype RQi Pro prototype motorbike.

Why can't we fit out a production unit in the UK to make efficient, eco e-cycles and small/ medium e- motorbikes in a derelict car/engine/transmission plant (name one of many) here to supply us here and EU screaming out for these? We don't all want or need a 2 tonne £50,000 vehicle to get to work/shops/gym etc? If R & M are highly profitable selling £5-10k bicycles with a battery surely there is room for investing in such a business in UK?

The big Japanese factories are going to have to start bringing out EV models before 2030 when emissions rules in the EU and UK are going to be significantly tightened and make petrol powered bikes pretty much obsolete. I do wish they’d hurry up and bring out some models sooner though. I live in the Isle of Man; home of the TT motorcycle races and was very excited to see the Mugen Shinden electric superbike perform there during the last (pre-pandemic) TT zero race. Sadly that race has been put on hold for a couple of years mainly due to limited manufacturer interest leading to very few entries and also the limited range of these bikes which restricted races to just a single lap of the 37.75 mile long TT Mountain Course. It’s a shame because the Mugen bikes showed such promise and of course Mugen are very closely tied to Honda, with a lot of (largely unconfirmed) speculation that the Mugen race bike was a proxy prototype for a forthcoming Honda Fireblade (equivalent) electric superbike. If such a thing ever gets made, as it surely must, that would be a game changer and really bring electric sports bikes into the mainstream. Fingers crossed we won’t have to wait until 2030 to see it.

The biggest problem with the Japanese Big 4, or rather the vast majority of Japanese companies is they have a "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. Unless there is market pressure to get into EV's they won't take any risky moves such as retooling for an EV lineup. I mean just look at the DRZs and the KLRs, 2 prime examples of doing the bare minimum to meet emissions standards. Even Harley is trying to innovate within that rigid Luddite iron cage their customer base has forced them into.

Charges from normal power socket in 5hrs max, but I only take down to 40%, so charged in 2-3 hours. Obviously it depends what your daily use is but what is the point of dragging around 2 tons of EV getting 3km per kwh, when these things get 20km per kwh. But you say "I have a family", you can buy 10 of these for 1 EV. But the most important thing is that these are FUN, FUN, FUN, riding around with a permanent grin.

@@bentp4891 That really sucks man! I did not know that, although I did see a video of a guy in the UK who rocks around a mountain bike with an AGNI/Lynch motor with a throttle which is capable of 60mph. Perhaps he just has the attitude of "catch me if you can" or "I'll pay the ticket when/if the time comes"

That Niu Aero looks like such a premium ride that I'm surprised to see a derailleur on it. Internal gearing does lose a tiny bit of efficiency, but I'd say that's more than made up for with the almost complete lack of maintenance required. For the lycra mob, derailleurs are fine. They ride for leisure and can dedicate their down time to maintenance, but commuters and delivery riders, an e-bike is a workhorse. Maybe take it to the bike shop for an annual service, but you don't want to think about it beyond that. Internally geared hubs are much more reliable long term and don't stress the chain as much, so I'd really expect one on a bike of this caliber.

got to be honest.. I think the electric scooters from this manufacturer look great imo.. some people might scoff at the styling or performance. and if I was being critical and looking for perfection. I might agree.. but I'm not. I think for the market there aiming at. there spot on! practical and fun!

@@markthomasson5077 I meant if I were in China right now, but you raise an interesting point. Is there a way to bring such cheap production to the West? Could existing Western brands re-badge these models under their own name? Could scooters be partially assembled in China, then finished off in the West? Would it be viable for the brand to do mass shipments and sell them under their own marque?

A great insight - and shows how China didn’t just ‘accidentally’ become the manufactory of the world overnight for no reason. It’s hard work and in some cases, hard labour. However, on the positive side, even as people took the p!$$ out of the Japanese motorcycles in the 1980’s I knew that the British and American machines were now having a real competitor in the ‘big four’ as Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki were known. And the big four made motorcycles that same exact way, for maybe 3 decades. 1980 to 2010, no change really, except more valves became the norm, and big ‘adventure’ bikes became a thing. From 2010 to now, the Japanese electronics and software-driven dials and traction control, have picked up, but if that was meant to stave off the electrification of motorcycles and scooters, it failed. Now, the Chinese have come along, and after 15 years or so of people slagging off the Chinese bike-in-a-crate business, the Chinese are into territory that the Japanese were around 1980. We will shift very quickly from being sceptical about Chinese quality, into being properly appreciative of that same quality - and Electric Vehicles turn out to be the thing that will usher China into the consciousness of the bulk of car-owners and drivers, and scooters and motorcycles. In other words, is it fair to say, EVs are the catalyst that will assert Chinese strength and even prowess, in manufacturing worldwide? This ‘big’ bike ridden at the end, looks like the 400 to 600cc equivalence. A multi (usually 4-cylinder) of this size, is pretty heavy, and a compact single-cylinder can be quite light but ‘thumpy’, and you cannot see a thing out the mirrors at certain roadspeeds on a single-cylinder! In ‘old money’ ie the tax system and licensing of riders, 400cc and a certain power is a demarcation line for example, so lots of 600cc bikes, had lower-capacity versions made for the Japanese market specifically, that were 400cc. The obvious issue being, either the 400 was too heavy (think two disk brakes up front) or the 600 was too light (think skinny bendy front forks that ‘twist’ too much). In other words, this bike is in the sweet spot. Somewhere in the old size of a middleweight from say 250cc to 600cc, there is a ‘general purpose’ bike that will suit many people. If it is the new electrically-propelled technology, it stands to reason it will last longer, and has a future. Plus, you can start this thing at 2am without waking the neighbours/wife/cat/dog etc, which means that as often happens, wheeling it down the alley-way or path is not an issue any longer. These are great times, strides are being made and I thank Fully Charged for bringing it to us, and I agree with other contributors that the presentation is a lot better now, but we were all happy to stick with it, unlike some shows, it’s not a personality cult! Noticed the bigger bike uses a chain not an in-wheel or hub motor? Perhaps hub motors are not quite fettled yet, for this power range and maybe there’s a smidgeon of marketing there too - it’s a REAL motorcycle, it’s got to have a chain, as it were? Another great episode anyway and having a presenter in China is frankly, an obvious need in the world of EVs, so well done for not doing a UK Govt thing, of missing the flaming obvious and choosing a complex, twisted, and hardly-likely-to-work method instead (Coronavirus testing labs that never really worked and now we find they are often giving wrong results - I’m looking at you, because the government could have availed itself of many university labs and other private labs instead. I could talk about the conference centres, that were going to go bust in the pandemic, but the govt saved their backside by converting them to hospitals - then they were almost entirely unused).

theres a reason the assembly process is still very labour intensive and, IMHO, very agricultural. Its simply better commercial sense to pay someone mere pennies a day than it is to invest heavily in robotics etc.

Those chinese moped style electric pedlers are awesome, slow enough to not get into trouble, perfect little runaround for carrying lots of stuff from the local shop, way more comfortable and useful than the cycle based ones we are stuck with, wish they were legal in Oz. Electric motor cycles are a different prospect and could very easily get you killed because of their silent running, the louder the better is the safest way to go for a motorcycle. Don't you know there is "Tesla" mobility scooters as well.
