When we heard Sono Motors was going to be in the Netherlands, we jumped at the chance of seeing this German company and their groundbreaking solar panel covered Sion.
And Jonny got a test drive.
The video was shot last summer. A lot has happened since then. Here is an update:
- The motor will be FWD and supplied by Continental
- The connectivity module will be supplied by BOSCH, which enables carSharing and rideSharing
- The battery (35 kWh, liquid cooled) will be produced in Germany by ElringKlinger
- The Sion has a range of 250 km (255 km WLTP/ 320 km NEDC)
- We use highly efficient, monocrystalline silicon cells for the solar modules. A total of 330 cells can generate a maximum power of 1,204 watts with 24 percent efficiency. This results in up to 30 km additional range through the sun. Perfect for commuters!
- The price of the Sion is 16.000€ without battery. Battery included 25.500€. Battery rental or leasing possible.
- The prototype from the video shows the development status of about 2 years ago. Check our website to see the current status + facts: sonomotors.com/sion.html/

@John Sinclair Don't spread lies about wind power. If the payback from wind turbines was so poor, it wouldn't be the cheapest form of energy available today. As for the solar panels - that day when you drive to a remote beach, you'll wish they had added panels on the bumper too. @@mycosys The cost is much lower when you have regenerative braking. Gas cars use heat to make the car go and then heat the brakes. Battery electric cars get to reuse the energy from braking. And adding weight doesn't change the wind resistance of the car, only the rolling resistance.

I really like the idea of solar panels on the car just to offset the power vampires enabling the vehicle to maintain power when parked in a car park or campsite where power may not be available from other sources. Not going to recharge the battery for long range journeys but I certainly like utilitarian vehicles. I would like to see a power point in the boot though so you can run your induction hob and fridge in the boot when camping. I could imagine being able to plug in additional solar PV panels whilst on a camp site to enable faster and bigger utilisation of solar on intermittent sunny days as we see more often than not in the UK. I didn't hear anything about cost.

Omg Sono Motors Sion have made an Electric beetle, or "A car for the people." This is great for local workers, taxiing the kids about & shopping with no worries about charging up at the end of it, the biggest thing they have done, maybe without realising it? is freed up the idea you have to live in a house with a drive/garage to own an BEV, now you can live in a flat or a terrace house with no access to home charging & maybe with the occasional quick charge your set for a week. Good job Sono, I truly hope you succeed with this car for the people.

@@thelining4078 I assure you, x o, (lots of thought in that name) it was absolutely meant as a compliment, I'm sure you have had lots of VW's and feel very passionate about it, I have personally owned three beetles,1 Squareback, a 411 saloon ,two 412LE estates & two camper vans, my first beetle was a 1965 6v model as was the 1968 split screen camper, so by no means was it meant as insult. The ethos of this car is just as the beetle was first produced, cheap to buy & run so any one could eventually own one. FYi 21 million were made & sold to all. They have built the Sion & it is meant to be a car for all people, that is their idea, one that can be shared not even purchased, one that doesn't care where you live or unlike the stupid comment from further above, as cheap as practical. I notice you have added to your comment "...by comparing this puzzle of a car to it" you know, if you can come up with an idea that would be better than this one, please throw it into the pot, I'm sure we all would like to see it. Of course you realise it wasn't a literal comparison to the beetle, although it could resemble an early golf, it is the idea of moving the peoples car into the EV future. I'm sorry you thought I insulted the iconic VW beetle.

@@NidalRashid Typically even in modest weather you're looking at ~150-180Wh/km. To add 35km/day you'd need to collect at least 6.3kWh of power from the solar. In Canada we have an average of 3.5 PV hours/day of solar year round. (more in summer, less in winter, etc). Meaning you need to collect ~1.8kW for 3.5 hours. at 20% efficient panels you'd need 9 m^2 of panels facing the sun directly to collect the necessary power. IOW the entire thing is a scam. Those same solar cells would be better off in a solar farm where they adjust the angle of the panels to match the sun....
@davidlazarus67

John Sexton Thanks for the information. That’s more than enough for most people. The 30km a day from solar is more than enough for many drivers to cope with a daily commute. It's important to keep your wits about you when online - but it's even MORE important that the claims get made public so that they can be debated and discussed by people who know and care about such things. That's where Fully Charged leaves the room, job done, having got people arguing... :-)

I would be very surprised if they produce more than 500w combined even on a sunny day, so lets say you live in spain/nevada or even norway/alaska in the sunniest of days 12h maybe 14h at best if you consider latitude and efficiency angles etc etc you're looking at 5kw/day but keep in mind the side panels some will not produce much if any electricity depending on angles and shade, so my 500w figure is already too optimistic for my liking, maybe 200w is more realistic, but without real numbers wattage, efficiency, voltage it's hard too tell. But I wouldn't say you can rely on these solar panels to charge your car, if this was that tv show lost and they had all the time in the world and they had no other means to generate power they could let the car sit there for a long time and eventually be fully charged so they could get to the other side of the island, now keep in mind the electronics also consume electricity so it's common to see the 'vampire drain' in cars so that means if the weather is not perfect you may still lose capacity despite the panels, and at night it will always consume so unless the power generated during the day is greater than 24h worth of vampire drain than your excess minus efficiency losses and natural losses that's your actual extra electricity. I would rather just park my car and have rooftop panels, these panels look like a gimmick to me maybe they can help not sure it's a cost effective way to do it but yea i would say forward say to dave from eevblog and let the man do the math.

@@dashtesla i dont think its gimmick i used my own city car as a model i found i have 3m2 of surface area if all of it was used to solar panels, i would get alot keep in mind that GHI is 4-5kwh/m2/day, i'm not talking about DNI which you can get with solar trackers, that may get you 6-7kwh/m2/day so with 3m3 x 4-5kwh/m2/day, and taking into account efficiency of 17%, you get 2kwh/day what you are talking about is peak power, but it doesnt matter when you're charging this car is perfect for touring, trips and camping if you get a +30km extra range each day during your trips, it have major economic implication to get between 10% and 100% extra range each day, depending on trip lengths

CV joints from the motor to the wheel add very little loss. For a small car, the motors only need to be able to total up to about 30KW in constant use. The short term power can easily by 5 times that limited only by the motor getting too hot. If the electronics is smart, you get "traction control" basically for free. I'm really excited for Sion, and I really hope they make it to market. it's a shame the base price took a bit of a hike fairly recently owning to battery costs (I believe). My concern with this car is the practicality of the solar panels - sure they're great for powering low voltage/current devices (infotainment, fans, mobile phone chargers) but can it make a practical difference to the car's range in the real world? I know Tesla shot it down, along with a few other companies. Don't get me wrong, it's great and the flexible panels weigh next to nothing these days so "why not". Maybe it's real potential is taking advantage of the bi-directional power flow, ie using the Solar Panels to power external devices outside of the car (think camping, power outages etc). Most modern devices (that don't heat/cool or have locomotion) use sod all power so make a great companion for Solar. Open source parts could be huge, I do hope they run with that. The ability to enhance and customise your vehicle really could be a game changer as Johnny put it. I hope they consider extending that plan to other areas of the car - as a nerd this has my eyes completely lit up. These days manufacturers are so unfriendly to the end user it's practically impossible to do any sort of modifications unless you have some sort of background in mechanics and electronics. Fingers crossed

from the video it sounds like the panels might be adding some usable range if you have a short commute... of course, they've added a lot more panels than most companies looked at (iirc Tesla shot down the idea of putting solar on the roof - this has it on the roof, boot, doors, bonnet, etc).
