Suguri's beautiful freeskate at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino. Music is Piano Concerto No.2 by Rachmaninoff. She placed 4th overall. (English NBC commentary; higher resolution)
I' m So glad to see the comments to cheer up Ms. Fumie Suguri 's performance. Recent her skating is not good for ages compare to this , But I respect her challenges. Her spins are So speedy, and another choreograph are So attractive, I really respect to be a many Japanese skateers' model. And Thank U So much to have good coments toMs. Fumie Suguri .
Fumie doesn' t have great positions or step sequences, but she moves my emotions with her speed, artistic expression, grit and jumps and that is something that doesn't happen often. Well done. She shows her soul when she skates.

that spin at the end is the craziest thing i've ever seen
If Irina were from any other country, she would never have won a major title. Fumie deserved the medal.

The adding of a level 4 before this season (with such strict requirements to reach level 4 compared to what it is now) and having four spins did Fumie no favors as it forced her to work against her strengths. Compare this simplistic routine to Fumie's past programs (like her brilliant Carmen the year prior) and you'll see how the new technical demands affected her. It's a shame this LP turned out the way it did as Fumie was known to be quite artistic and musical as evidenced by her SP.

BINGO, hit the nail in the head, one thing I've always lappreciated about her is her consistency,, she was always on the podium during the golden Age of figure skating. To be sharing the podium consistently with legends like Michelle Kwan and Irina Slutskaya is a testament to Fumies fighting heart and competitive mindset, for me she's one of the best.

Poor Fumie. She was cheated out of a medal at Torino. She skated her heart out and had two clean programs. She should have had bronze.
@annecohen89274 жыл бұрын
The reason why Fumie couldn’t take the Bronze medal was that Slutskaya had a less stellar performance due to vascular problems, but she was brave enough to hold on. And yes, it was at times life threatening.
@Zuranthium17 жыл бұрын
Watch Fumie's performances just a month later at 2006 Worlds - her spins were a lot better there. That was her problem at these Olympics...her spins being weaker than the top 3 ladies meant that she was losing those technical points AND the impact of her performances was a bit lessened as a result of the spins not having enough "WOW" factor.
@Zuranthium17 жыл бұрын
Sasha deserved Silver. Her performance was far more detailed and far-reaching, her Spiral is immensely better, and her Spins are much better. Even though Sasha made two big mistakes on the jumps she still wasn't far behind Fumie in that area either because her jump layout was harder and Fumie did double one of her Triples.

sk8ingcoach1 Falling doesn't automatically mean off the podium
@annecohen89274 жыл бұрын
Haikal Danial And sk8ingcoach1 well, it counts as a deduction though it doesn’t mean an automatic disqualification. A multiple chain of falls throughout the program should automatically disqualify the skater when it is done intentionally since it often result from a combination of using poor techniques, lack of practice and poor coaching skills by the coach of the skater. A case of the nerves is not often the reason for the skater to perform poorly. It is often the result of using poor techniques and the lack of practice. One can start a skate with confidence and determination , but a simple fall often makes a skater very nervous.

she did score higher than slutskaya, but she wasnt robbed. the overall scores has both the SP and the FS. Irina was 5 points ahead of Fumie going into the the free skate. in the overall score, slutskaya did enough to stay in 3rd place, but it was close.

How about both programs she skated here, particularly her short program. She DESERVEDLY received the highest program component score, with 8.00s on interpretation. Also, her Malaguena SP from 2004 and her Swan Lake FS stand out as highlights to me, as well as her 2002 Olympic Short Program to My Sweet and Tender Beast. Suguri's technical mastery here is obvious, especially the jumping, but she is far from the Top 2 on artistry, and honestly, behind Slutskaya too.

@idolfan9495 She did not skate clean. She doubled her triple flip. Irina and Sasha each had 2 mistakes over the 2 programs, so to say Fumie deserved a medal is to say Fumie is less than 1 mistake close to being the skater Irina and Sasha are over 2 programs which is not the case.

it seems to me that she's more into 'ticking the boxes' rather than delivering a performance. Although she did all the jumps, there wasn't a wow factor in her program. I'm sorry she didn't win a medal, but it seems like an accurate judgement..
수구리 후미에가 쇼트와 프리 스핀 레벨만 3,4만 받았어도, 동메달이었을텐데.....프리 덤블링도 아쉽고.아마 구채점제였다면, 충분히 은메달!!

StewNT Let us put it this way as to how Sasha ended up waaayyyy ahead of Suguri: While Cohen did a 3F2T, 3T Steps into3S, and 3S on the second half, Suguri did a wonderful 3L, 2F2T, 3T, and a squeaked out 2A. Plus, if you tell me that Cohen's Spins and Spirals weren't superior to Suguri's, plus, their grade of execution, you may have to see both performances side-by-side. Did you notice that Suguri did the same spins? 1 Sit Spin, 1 Flying Sit Spin 1 Camel-Combo Spin, 1 Flying-Camel Combo Spin all of them in the same positions. As a matter of fact, 1 thru 4 placements, had the same number of jumps, except Arakawa and Suguri didn't fall. However, out of the four ladies, Suguri had the weakest spins, positions, transitions, and lower PC.

Argue? If you feel that Suguri had better overall packaging than Cohen; then that's personal opinion. I thought someone may like a clarification as to why or how come. If still unsure, I'm sure KZfaq has the tv explanation of who won what part of the segment and how Suguri faired against the Top 3 ladies. Thanks.

The only person who Robbed Fumie was Lori Nichol. Fumie has speed flow, technique and a great feeling for the music, YET Lori gave her NO choreography, there was nothing wow about her performance, despite the fact that she went clean, at the olym,pics. The judges would have had to give her the medal had she any sprt of a complete program...but she didn't! Lori should be jailed for this!

Sasha and slutskaya were in the panic from their falls and they were going "my goodness! not now!" and messed up rest of the program. Sasha fell twice, Slutskaya fell and her last spin travelled so badly. Fumie wasn't my favorite, and I expected Sasha and Slutskaya to win. Afterall, figure skating should be a sport. PCS and GOE should've been valued less than TES.

@barkingtree886 жыл бұрын
Overall a great performance, but watching it again I can see the reason why she did not make the podium. Things went a little downhill after she got her second triple lutz out of the way: doubling out of the triple flip, a couple shaky landings, and her straight line footwork seemed to lack passion and finesse. I agree with Dick's remarks about some of the spin positions and her spiral sequence is just not there! She might have been able to sneak into a medal position if she had landed that second triple flip with a +GOE, but it looks like she ran out of steam... Nevertheless, 4th in the Olympics is a remarkable achievement!

@lichiyeordiastro Sure, she has the right to, no doubt about that. I'm just wondering if she really WANTS to go on, because she looks so unhappy when she skates. I mean look at her, she's so different from, say, the 2002-2003 season. I'm not saying she should retire because she's mediocre, I'm just saying she needs to find the love for the sport again. She looks so miserable now, and it's not that pleasant to watch, don't you think? Thank you for your opinion though! ^__^
@safehaven1115 жыл бұрын
nope. I think that she would've won bronze if she had a little more height on her flips.
@pamelabacker24204 жыл бұрын
She was robbed of the bronze. There was doubt all over Cohen's face, and it reflected in her skating. Fumie was better.

@wobbles610 Actually Sasha has terrible skating skills. She is slow and has weak edges. Suguri is better than Sasha in that area for sure. However Sasha is better in most other things.
@cheburashka1914 жыл бұрын
@rbred378 I totally agree, her spins, spirals, her arms...the quality's just not there. And she wants to keep competing.....gosh, she has no artistry at all, and now her jumps are all gone. She REALLY needs to retire.
