I had a chance to see the F4 Phantom in flight when I was in Pampanga (nearby is the Clark Air Base when it was still operating as a US airbase) and heard its sonic boom. It was beautiful sight seeing this magnificent fighter jet

AH good old Subic bay, I can still taste the San Miguel!
I grew up in Air Force bases. I knew by the sound of the jet engines which one was what. F4-E, Mirage F1, RF4, F 84, E 3 Corsair. Phantom was a music to my ears then.

A classic, maybe. Greatest? Hardly. It was a flying bus. If Vietnamese pilots weren’t so poorly trained a lot more of them would have been shot down. The f-15 eagle. Now that is a great fighter.

Not to deter anyone's love of the f4 but it is actually a mess of an airplane. Wings and elevators bent to make up for it's aerodynamic deficiencies. Relatively poor dogfighter. SAM's locked onto it astonishingly well because of the position of the engines. Compared to the big 4, the 14, 15, 16 and 18, it's a turd. But it's an airplane so it's cool.

He was in the 50s era of jet engines Engine builder instructor and did a lot of top-secret missions involving the General electric J 79 that were in the F4F ,F111 ,B-52s, and many other military aircraft , that involves the GEJ 79 tturbine power plant …
@genewalter5022 Жыл бұрын
J-79's were an axial-flow..F-104's and F-4's and the Buff's... F-111's had a turbo-fan P/W TF30's...more power and bigger..worked on all 4 in Europe in the 70's... along with anything else that came thru that was flying U.S. or NATO...maintenance...

Just imagine. Less than 20 years after the end of WWII, there would be a Mach 2+ capable fighter that could deliver a bomb load that would put a B29 to shame. What a plane.
The Phantom was the best fighter/bomber on the planet in the 50s and 60s. Sure liked watching them give us ground pounders close air support in Vietnam. Amazing warbird. Glad to see the JAF put her to good modern use.

That was very stirring - as the version of my Hasegawa 1/48 JASDF F-4EJ that I have built is number 414 as well...
The Phantoms used by Japan are more for bombing and reconnaissance roles but still very capable, for example, they are much faster than say a present day F-18 fighter. Unfortunatley, Japan plans on replacing all F-4's by 2020 with the F-35's
@colin.k62635 жыл бұрын
@Ben White they are beautiful planes as stated above and will be missed sporting their awesome paint schemes often customized by their squadrons. a luxury the F-35's cannot partake in without their stealth capabilities being jeopardized as they are painted with certain type of pain
@andrewleonard4755 жыл бұрын
@@colin.k6263 What difference does it make if it can't have a cool paint job? The F35 still has a lot more capabilities than the F4, therefore the F35 is more benificial to Japan. I'd rather buy a car that is much safer and highly advanced with a dull, boring paintjob than buy a shitty, dangerous one just because it looks cool.

@@andrewleonard475 and i agree but as an enthusiast, I wish to see a nice plane as well. Whilst saftey reigns as the number one priority, I do wish that we could do so in style. you know? live a little? just a want, a desired outcome to look cool whilst doing cool stuff. The JASDF is impressive and sharp looking. Their training, skill and courage should be seen as necessary to keeping the peace and security of their country, as well as ensuring stability in Asia. While every country has pride in its armed forces, the lessons of history and how cruel and devastating war can be, every country should also be reminded that deterrence, diplomacy and goodwill can do much more for trade, exchange and peace too. We hope every country remembers history and the importance of practicing diplomacy and promoting peace.

After 27 years in the Navy fixing Navy Jets, Dad went to work for McDonnell Aircraft building F-4s. What a kick ass plane. In 1958, the Navy asked for an interceptor. They got one. It was such a good interceptor, the Air Force ended up buying more F-4s than the Navy. Over 5,100 built. Gorgeous airplane. Fantastic 3rd Generation jet. Then, McDonnell got the F-15 contract. Best 4th Generation warplane ever built. Good times. My son followed Dad into aviation. He's designing the B-21 for Northrup. More good times.
