£60k Fun Cars! Alpine A110S vs Audi RS3 vs Ford Mustang Mach 1
Let CarGurus help you find your next car:

Fun cars playlist: • Fun Car Reviews | Car...
Anyone with a £60,000 budget for their next car will have a huge variety of makes and models to choose from, but for that kind of money, they you might - quite rightly - be expecting an element of fun from your car. But what if the f-word - fun - is your number one over-riding priority for your new car? What £60k car delivers it the best? Well, again, you have a wide range of options, and we've put together what we believe to be three of the best. The thing is, each of our contenders takes a VERY different approach to how it delivers on fun...
The contenders:
Alpine A110S: the lightweight sports car option, with its two seats, rear-wheel drive and mid-mounted turbocharged petrol engine belting out 300 horsepower.
Audi RS3: The hot hatch option, with its 400 horsepower five-cylinder turbo engine, four-wheel drive, a prestige badge and family-friendly practicality.
Ford Mustang Mach 1: The muscle car option, with a thumping 460 horsepower from its 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8, plus iconic looks and an incredible soundtrack.
To find out which of our contenders delivers the best on fun, we took all three to the beautiful Brecon Beacons in Wales, home to some truly epic scenery, even more epic roads, and weather that's also epic, often for the wrong reasons. And by golly, did we have some fun...

Putting aside practicality, if you want a car that can get across country and off the line as fast as possible you choose the Audi; if you want the best car handling car for the twisties you choose the alpine; if you want every drive to be an event regardless of road type, and a special feeling and sound and a great cruiser whilst also being fun on a twisty road you choose the mustang. That’s why I have a mustang Bullitt as our second car. The most fun car I’ve had after owing m5, lotus exige v6, cayenne turbo etc

After a stack of test drives in various cars, the Alpine blew me away. Such a hoot to drive, such a joy to live with, hands down the winner. I now have one on my drive and don't regret the decision in the slightest.

I have RS3 Y hatchback since January. A brilliant jack of all trades, snow mobil, grocery shopper, kids transporter, high speed cruiser, country/mountain road hooligan. And today I will take delivery of a A110 GT to complete my "perfect two car garage". The A110 replaces a 991.2, the French interpretation of a true sports car simply is more special and entertaining than the German one.

Drove the A110 GT, i e the softer suspension with the more powerful engine, and the lower seats. It was almost too easy to drive, very flattering. I'm a sucker for engine sound and I was surprised how good the engine sounded.

A cracking fun review guys, well done. Great commentary and superb editing with the in car shots, roadside and drone footage. Very entertaining but more importantly very informative too. I would have a very difficult choice to choose a winner from these three cars but if I had to it would be the Mustang as it's not only bonkers but plenty of space (think cup holders), different on British roads and that sound track would be addictive, no more synth sounds from an engine here it's the real V8. Now where could I actually park it? OK the not boring Audi wins as it's practical but that go cart lunacy of the Alpine is...? OK its a triple draw for me anyway. I want all three.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the difference between quality and luxury, they are not antonyms as much of the implied criticism in the commentary seems to suggest. A functional plastic interior in not poor quality provided it serves its purpose and lasts the test of time., even if it does have a 'cheap' feel to it, similarly a luxury leather interior in not in itself necessarily 'high quality' if it is not practical or does not stand the test of time.

Strange that Car Guru don't seem to have a problem with remote steering in modern Performance BMW's, I found the steering in the RS3 consistent with modern electric systems very accurate and precise which is ok for me as I don't worry about being able to feel the flavour of a discarded starburst wrapper through the wheel (other fruit flavour chewing confectionery is available) that mythical feel thing Journos hanker after hasn't really existed since non mechanical connected systems were phased out. Come on guys I don't know what you're describing but it ain't good ole mechanical feel. The Alpine has a higher rack ratio maybe than the RS3, that would make it a little more pointy and quicker to rotate but I'd wager the Renault wouldnt get close to the Audi in a cross country sprint. The RS3 steering is good though and I just prefer the refinement of modern electric systems for the road and for the input to directly replicate in the output at the wheels as closely as a directly connected system used to i.e. to go where I place it consistently and accurately and the RS3 does. it worked well in tandem with the torque splitter. I also found the Audi to be more fun the harder you pushed it and at no time could I reach a point where understeer could be felt. I agree with the guys about the RS Dash display they have it wrong and need to give buyers a choice of several, I'd like them to go to the classic center Rev Counter or even the rising bar graph both are better than the runway system. Also you have to be old not to be able to use the multi media system on an Audi, I prefer it when haptics are turned off as it becomes very fast and slick and soon muscle memory takes over and instinctively you hit the right Icons, just as you do your smart phone. I think I prefer the 5 pot thrum to the V8 sound but its close. It seems to me they nit picked of the RS3 almost identical to the one I drove only last weekend, simply to support their narrative and love of the Alpine, so nothing either car could do was going to interfere with their already written conclusion. Just look at the review a year ago and it was very predictable. In fairness there is I agree alot to like about the Alpine its really nice from the back but less so at the front which looks a bit like a squashed Juke. However to say that 80% would not know they were looking at an RS3 says it all about the direction in which this review had been driven. I would take the Audi all day long even though they have indeed compromised on the interior plastics here and there. The Alpine is still a Renault, no offence and I have had two Clio's in the past but its parts bin is everywhere and not in a good way, it some how makes it less special.

Or just learn how to drive smoothly into apexes and any slow car could be far more fun driven fast for less than £6000. Fiat Panda, Toyota Prius, VW Fox, Citroens, etc. Just those who are too accustomed to no-brainer, easy drivers' cars would complain.

I get what you're saying, but that's total nonsense. Few cars give sufficient Feedback to drive them fast and to be enjoyable. At no point in any of those cars' development cycle did someone say 'fancy making this fun?' Noone bothered to set up the controls of a Micra or panda, the pedal box for heel-and-toe, the suspension to settle quickly after compression, there to be any body control at speed, etc etc. I've had a raft of the type of car you're on about, and the Ka was the only one which could be chucked around for fun. If you'd have said a 6k Fiesta, I would have agreed with you, cos they are suberb

Gears are too long on a Cayman (75 mph in second gear? Really?). There's too many of them on the road for it to feel all that special, plus the sound Porsche manages to get from the four pot is a huge dissapointment. A110 all they way in my humble opinion.
