Just a small asterisk: Back then most asylums, like prisons, served a similar punitive function. The fact that Kropotkin notices the slight turn of the asylum to a more "sanitary" fuction doesn't mean he is doing a Foucault. Foucault tells us that punishing the body turns to body discipline and puts this turn into the context of governmentality. In other words, he tells us that medical treatment can become a (bio)power in the hands of the state through the public health apparatus. I would doubt that Kropotkin reached a similar conclusion, but if he did I am happy to learn this! The school example is also quite similar to what Foucault said but again, it's just an observation, ahead of its time maybe, but not formed into a larger criticism yet...

I think penny farthings are actually more stable then conventional bikes the reason they fell out of fashion was because of the difficulty of getting on one
@polychrome2666
@polychrome2666 3 жыл бұрын
Earlier velocipedes did actually have similar-sized wheels! The penny-farthing innovated by increasing the size of the front wheel, as the longer rotation made it possible to attain greater speeds than a traditional velocipede. The invention of the chain drive eventually made the penny-farthing obsolete, as it was now possible to simultaneously attain high speed and safety without trading off one for the other. The more you know!

Hey Zoe, first of thank you for your great work. I had a question and I'm not certain of how to reach you best so I'll just try like this. I'm currently working on putting together a paper on the differences between bolshevist and anarchist pedagogy and the underlying foundations of them. I was wondering if you could recomend some literature or sources regarding anarchist pedagogy, preferady from the late 19th to the mid 20th century.

What do you mean by pedagogy? Just stuff about schools? Or broader? For schools see Bray, Anarchist Education and the Modern School: A Francisco Ferrer Reader Avrich, The Modern School Movement Ferretti, The spatiality of geography teaching and cultures of alternative education: the ‘intuitive geographies’ of the anarchist school in Cempuis (1880-1894)

I'd be very grateful if you could help provide me with sources. "I wanted to ask you if there are any books by anarchists that give a general history/broad overview of the failures of democratic socialism across the 20th century?
