Billy McKee, who died on Tuesday aged 97, was a founding member of the Provisional IRA, and a staunch critic of Sinn Fein's embrace of non-violence. His funeral was held today at St Peter's Cathedral in West Belfast. Mr McKee's coffin was carried from the church in a gun carriage, with men wearing the military-style black berets associated with the IRA part of the procession. A eulogy was read at a memorial garden on the Falls Road, a short distance from the church. A mourner said: 'Billy remained steadfast to the end and had no regrets, despite all the hardship that he endured for his republicanism.'

I worked with a Belfast nurse who looked after Billy for a spell.She said he was a very kind considerate man a devout Catholic who was against drugs and criminal activity he cared about his people and community but truly believed only armed force will bring about a United Ireland.

Billy never wanted war he was a very private man who wanted a peaceful prosperous life a loved and contented family.The Republican soldier was in his blood though he loved the cause and took his role and oath as a volunteer as sacred he could be ruthless with informers though according to historical records within the public domain.I’m not a soldier I’m a nurse but had I been a soldier the cause would’ve had to be just for the protection and rights of my tribe my people total loyalty to my community.Paramilitaries from both sides earnestly started out with this mindset sadly it degenerated into a dirty war.

You can tell that this is modern. If this was in the 90s or 80s there would be balaclava-clad Provos marching everywhere waving tricolours and sunburst flags and chanting 'Up the Ra' and volleys of shots and everything.

He seemed to me to be a man committed to his cause a formidable man in his time.A lot of old IRA men disagree with bombing tactics civilians getting hurt women and children I think Billy was of that mindset.I believe whatever army you represent when innocent people none combatants get hurt it will turn world wide opinion against you the cause you represent.Soldiers should fight other soldiers leave civilians out of it I also do not agree with people being tortured be it for reprisal or intelligence when a man lays down arms surrendering his human rights should be respected he is a prisoner of war.Likewise with ambush once someone surrenders they should be given the right to surrender I disagree with shoot to kill unless it’s a suicide bomber they deserve three right between the eyes.
