Some say it's an show if dominance which doesn't make a lick of sense to me who has my life been more quite and reserved and non confrontational yet will yawn the second I see a dog or any passing by animal do so. Heck, I just it now reading this comment out loud as I was typing it. It's clearly at least somewhat psychological I feel.

Thank you for asking this question!! I was moved to do some googling, and I learned that in general, yawning cools the body and the brain. We really do yawn more when we’re hot! According to this article I read: “The contagious nature of yawning is believed to stem from empathy, or an innate recognition that if someone else is in need of a brain cool-down, you might be too. “There are also theories that yawning acts as an alerting mechanism, showing that an individual within a group is possibly in danger-or at least weary. A yawn may simply be the body’s way of alerting others that the current environment just isn’t suitable, for reasons of boredom.” The last paragraph could explain why cats and other animals-who are very much creatures of instinct and of the senses-yawn in empathy!

I've heard two other theories. One is the need for more oxygen which makes sense if its done first thing in the am or a hot muggy day when the air is "thick" with too much moisture. The other is a sign of safety to others within your group that you are not being aggressive. I think that many reasons are valid except for the dominance/aggression reason. I've seen several interspecies yawn amongst themselves. Ex: On a hot muggy summers day, at my horse farm's barn, I'd yawn, the cats yawn, and every single horse in the barn yawns. Soooo funnny!!!!😂😂😂

I'm surprised anyone doesn't know that given all the videos out there with them and cucumbers. Side note, if there was suddenly an object poking at you almost your entire body length then you'd be pretty scared too so actually don't do those kindsa things in those viral internet videos. It seriously hurts and stresses out the cat and breaks the trust it has with people.
