Sisters Maria and Ileana live in a "museum-like" home in a village in Maramure?. Their once numerous family now consists of just the two of them. Parents and siblings died one after the other while they, just helping each other, continue living as traditionally as possible: they weave, they work on the fields, they make bread, they cut wood, they breed pig to sacrifice at Christmas. Their destiny as the last representatives of the family, keeping up a whole household without complaining about anything, is an icon of the Romanian peasants' destiny. Smart, hard-working, full of life, ready to do a man's work, satisfied with little ("I just want to have what to eat today and tomorrow"), the sisters are charming characters with a caching optimism. A touching film about the disk of an era, accompanied by subtle smile.

I am from Croatia, and these old ladies remind me of Croatian women who live on village. They are always cheerfull and happy no matter what, they are simple and have a great heart. Love to Balkans!

⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠@@offbeat65believe me, communism had restriction upon God and religion.They even destroied a part of Romania by the regim.They fired churches, killed priets because they could suppress the regim in our country by enlightening people s minds.Romania was a monarchy, a democratic state.

I meet a Romanian lady once. Only once in my life. These ladies remind me of the lady I met. This was a really great video. It reminds me of that day.

yep, they are probably in their 60ies, but they look older. Hard work does that to them :/ but they are people with good heart who will share their last piece of bread with complete strangers, that how Balkans people are. ;)

Absolutely wonderful beautiful adorable people, God bless each and everyone, they have the spiritual essence of love life,survival,,hey those sisters, the old lady up on the hay stack,everyone supporting her,it was adorable, oh how I wish I could be in that real human community love,spirit of survival,rather than Western media convenience, we've lost realness of basic human living,with greed,invention, etc we've lost what God gave the human being" Spiritual essence "satisfaction love laughter and physical and mental difference between real people,

There is a family like them living in my village in Turkey. They consist of 4 sisters, of which 3 are never married and they are in the ages between 32-50. They live with their father(73yo) as their mother died years ago (because a lot of straw bales fell on her)... i have mixed feelings about them... it is very hartwarming to see three sister co-work with each other and be together their whole life... but the weird thing is that they don’t go in public a lot.. they are a bit skittish 😭😅

I felt the same way…I turned of the video right away! They should NOT show that…so diabolical and grotesque!!! I know I has to happen but the video lost its charm and tenderness at that moment!

Perhaps it will occur to one or the other of the commentators here that people like Ileana and Maria do not have the financial means to forego some rich food in favour of other alternatives that are more expensive in the village. Incidentally, the sisters fast several times a year for religious reasons and not to lose a few kilos. They do this for many weeks a year, and then not with a varied vegetarian diet, which they cannot afford. Bread and maize porridge day in and day out. If you want to depict life in the countryside, you can't avoid depicting this aspect of their lives - feeding and slaughtering a pet.

They are not so old, but of course, but they quickly grow older than others. All the more surprising, as many older women outlive their husbands ...
