On the subject of former Doctors, the oldest surviving actor who played the role is Tom Baker, who was the most famous Doctor and the one who first made the show successful in America. Tom is 90 years old now. I expect that his passing will get some mention in the media even in the US. Tom played the Doctor from 1974 to 1981. Another fun fact is that one of his female companions on the show was Lalla Ward, they were married in real life for 2 years, but she ended up marrying the famous evolutionary biologist, zoologist and author Richard Dawkins, but they too are now divorced.

You're right about the limited special/visual effects of Classic Who adding to the charm of the series. I'm Gen-X (55) and it delights me that the show's revival sparked interest in the classic series, and I have seen a lot of younger reactors watch the classic episodes, completely gripped by the stories and characters, which are the true hearts of both Classic and NuWho. I also think it's funny that the oldest NuWho episodes (like this one from 2005), aired almost 20 years ago, so even the revived series now has the same low-budget charm to modern eyes that the original series had for viewers in 2005.

I’m an American who started watching Doctor Who on PBS in Chicago in 1980. The 2005 revival was a dream come true. However, there is a wonderful company called Big Finish who had already brought us great audio dramas with the original Doctor Who actors and they continue to this day. Online you may see negativity, but I think there are a lot of Doctor Who fans like myself who like old and new who and watch it all. I’m currently on a watch through of the 1st Doctor era with my 82 year old Mom.

I discovered Doctor Who in 1985 when I was out of work for five months. It was on a couple of PBS stations local to the NY/NJ area, one of which was on UHF (remember the bowtie antenna that clipped onto the normal VHF pole antenna?) I watched all of Doctors four and five, and most of six. I was delighted when they revived the series with Ecclestone and have watched it ever since.

@@donkeysunited It has one mature season. One. Out of four. One tries to be mature and could be argued to be but Miracle Day sadly cannot hold a candle to Children of Earth. The first two seasons are more YA and with that adolscent and wanna be mature/grown-up than actually grown up. That's not to say that it's totally bad, series two is pretty good and I'd argue easily the second best of the four. But series 1 suffers from a total lack of self-identity and bad character development. Quite frankly, it is telling in regards to his later run as Doctor Who showrunner that the one season in which Chris Chibnall could exert the most creative control as the headwriter and de facto showrunner was also the worst season of the entire show by a mile and a half.

With the new-Who Verse starting with the 9th Doctor, they did a really good job of explaining the basics of the original Dr. Who for those that have not seen the earlier Doctors. If I'm remembering correctly, Police Boxes were basically telephone booths with a direct line to the local police station. A TARDIS is supposed to have a chameleon circuit, something that automatically disguises it as something innocuous, but this one got stuck as a police box in the 60s. The Doctor has since fixed it, but likes it like this.

This was a sucessful revival because it respected the Classic series but also modernised and didn't rely on it for someone new to start watching. The Autons were a Classic Doctor Who Villain from the 70's, I wont say anythign more than that incase you ever do watch Classic Who but it doesn't matter if you know that or not. Obviously the effects in the 60's - 80's were not good, not even for the time but I don't think anyone really cared because the stories are good. Even modern Doctor Who doesn't have the best effects (although it does get better) but I can say that I have never met someone who only likes Classic Doctor Who and hates Modern Doctor Who.

Indeed. Sharing the things that bring us joy, connecting through them, certainly feels more important than ever. (As I often have to remind myself whenever I worry about spending too much time on "escapism". If not for stories and fun and art and laughing and crying together, what would be the point? Plus, as Gaiman among others has pointed out, "escape" is not a bad word; many people _need_ escape into art at various times, for various reasons.)

A police box was just a box, usually a bit bigger than a phone booth, usually painted blue or sometimes green. It locked from the outside and had a small compartment accessible from the outside with a phone in it that connected to the local police station. If a police constable arrested someone while on patrol (on foot) they could lock the arrested person up in the box, phone the station to send someone to come pick them up, then continue on their patrol.

Oo! Glad you are finally getting around to Dr Who. The 'Nu-Who' series aren't a reboot as such, they continue on from the 40-odd years of the classic programme. But, they treat you as a complete newcomer to the series, so the Who lore will be slowly re-revealed over the course of the series. No spoilers, but there are some amazing story arcs and payoffs over the course of multiple series. Dr Who can be exciting, scary, silly and often emotional, but it is one hell of a ride...

The new series blends pretty well with the original. Sure, the format changed over the years (where one story would last over several half-hour episodes as Part 1, Part 2, etc.), but the series is a good continuation. The new one has creatures and characters who first appeared in the 1960s and 70s. For example, those mannequins were originally on Earth in the 70s and defeated by Doctor #3. Something nice that they added with the new ones, is the inclusion of previous companions as guests. One of the original ones from the 70s became the lead of not one but two spinoffs decades apart. In an episode that aired in October 2022, one of the very first companions from the first episode of the entire series in 1963 made a guest appearance at the age of 97.
