Agreed. I think many people miss this... some think she is the Ronin all the way through, some miss that it's the Bride in the story that is reborn as an Onyru. I can't decide if she's supposed to be the Ronin at the start, and the Bride at the end, or the Bride all the way through.

@@Hohum37 I think Mizu is definitely meant to be both the ronin and the bride. So much of Mizu's character is about duality - white and Japanese, masculine and feminine, warrior and wife, ronin and bride - and about hiding or rejecting parts of those identities. Fantasizing about killing their own whiteness; concealing their womanhood while seeking revenge; then concealing their warrior nature while with Mikio, only for it all to come crashing down as soon as Mizu tries to synthesize those aspects and be fully, authentically themself. I think - or at least I hope - their arc will be about being able to accept and integrate all those aspects of themself and being okay with being... both. Neither. Something inbetween. Just Mizu.

I think in a much smaller way, so is Akemi. So they did a very cool complex parallel and story. Akemi started as The Bride, and is slowly becoming a Ronin, taking charge, fighting back, under no one. I haven't seen the next episodes yet, but I'm hoping Akemi also grows into more than just The Bride.

I wonder whether the husband taming horses is also meant to be part of that metaphor. Given the trick is to tame them enough to be rideable, but not break them so far that they lose their spirit, or have them turn on you. Not too different to what Mizu and Akemi have to do to the parts of themselves that don't fit into the standard roles their society is built around.

@dapeach06 Yes, one of the things that often gets overlooked is that women were also considered defenders of the home when the men were away, and many were trained in the use of the Naginata. One of the interesting pieces of the Last Samurai story is that during many of the battles of the Satsuma rebellions, the wives of Samurai would often furiously charge lines of Imperial soldiers after their husbands were killed in combat.

Every time this show has the chance to take the easy way out, leave someone as an undeveloped trope or leave some fridge-logic element unaddressed, it does something like this. We didn't HAVE to see that whole backstory dump. We didn't need to know Mizu as anything other than a badass avatar of vengeance and this still would have been a decent, entertaining show. Its this kind of detail that takes it next level.

Best episode this season. A couple of things I want to point out .. "Mizu" translates to "water", so that her mother spells it out is nice. The cloak that Mizu wears was Mikio's so she 'collects' these things from those people that she's had meaningful relationships - she wears Taigen's neckerchief now, Mikio's cloak .. I don't know if she has anything from Sword father but she basically grew up under him.

The fallout of her marriage is such a great tragedy. I remember watching them sparring the first time and talking to the TV, "no, not so fast, gotta ease him into this a bit." Also great that they never tells us, or Mizu what happened, could have been her husband, her mother, maybe neither, just leaves her feeling bitter and betrayed.
@McBeelzebub
@McBeelzebub 6 ай бұрын
I think they do tell us. Okay so here’s my take. I say the mom betrayed her. She saw their fallout, figured the marriage, and her meal ticket, was over, so sold Mizu out for one last cash grab. And as is pointed out she’s suddenly smoking again, something she shouldn’t have been able to afford. I think Mikio fleeing the fight was simple cowardice and it’s even in his backstory. He’s in disgrace already for being unreliable.
@arandomnamegoeshere
@arandomnamegoeshere 6 ай бұрын
@@McBeelzebub good points. Counter. The mother was already managing to afford "medicine" by selling herself before Mizu showed up. She claimed that this is what she did again. Possible. Mikio fleeing could be because fighting these soldiers would be taking arms against the Lord that he's been trying to ingratiate. So he fled but then had a change of heart. Did he kill the mother to quieten her or because she betrayed the love he realized he held above all else in life? It's natural to try an puzzle this out. But I don't think we're supposed to. The point is that we're shown again and again how Mizu is betrayed. How when faced with difficult choices, she will chose to wash complexity away with blood if it clears her path towards a singular goal - revenge. Ringo is right. This isn't about honor. It's about something darker. A darkness where Mizu treads.
@Hohum37
@Hohum37 6 ай бұрын
@@McBeelzebub I think that's valid. However, her mother did say she was selling herself on the bridge again, to afford her "medicine". Mizu isn't very picky about her revenge though, she's clearly done with both of them - if the mother had stabbed the husband instead, I expect she would have got Mizu's blade in her head.

33:50 The most interesting part about her turning her sword into a naginata for me (besides being cool af), was that it shows how she still uses things she learned from Mikio. Before they spar together, he tells her, “A bit old-fashioned, but no better weapon when outnumbered in battle.” She’s clearly outnumbered here fighting Hamata’s men, and is able to get the advantage using a weapon he taught her about 🥲 Also, something I didn’t notice until I rewatched the series, the cape/cloak Mizu wears in earlier episodes is the same one Mikio is wearing when we’re introduced to his character for the first time! ❤

I personally think the mother abandoned Mizu after the fire so she wouldn't have to take responsibility of taking care of her and having to live in isolation. And when they reunited, the mother just played it off as one big, hard life lesson. And Mizu swore vengeance with her mother in mind because she thought she was killed. I also think that both her and Mizu's husband were in on the plan to get rid of her. Then when that plan didn't work, they turned around and played the victim cards and blamed one another. Mizu was manipulated hard by two people that were suppose to have her back. It snapped her back to the path of vengeance. Remembering that trauma, I can't blame her for feeling like she's sparing Akemi from the harsh life of being a women during these times.

The beauty in your reaction to her "finding love", is very understated. After all those years of having believed that boys/men would only abuse/kill her simply because of her eyes...she didn't "find" love, she gradually broke the shackles on her mind, heart, body, and soul in finding that there was a man that wasn't evil. She DID kiss him. That wasn't love, that was elation and joy. The Onryo story and how it directly correlates to Mizu is so well done, and Akemi's affirmation is the icing on the cake. And, the guard told Mizu that her mom couldn't resist the bounty. Her mom was the one that turned her in. Her husband took away her horse because he was shamed (in his mind) and it was a wound to his masculinity that would never heal.

@@WrathOfGrapesN7 The distinction is, I think, that: Bushi means warrior generically, while Samurai means warrior of nobility. So, all Samurai are Bushi, not all Bushi are Samurai. (Like western Knights as opposed to warriors) It's not wildly important to the series, currently, anyway.
@troikas3353

@@WrathOfGrapesN7 Samurai were a specific social class within the stratified societal hierarchy of Japanese society in this era. Ronin were Samurai that either lost the Lord they served or were cast out in disgrace by them. Mizu was never a Samurai in the real sense. Though the show is also playing with the colloquial notion of "Samurai" as a romantic term for an honorable warrior, but she isn't that either as she knows there is nothing honorable about the path she's currently walking. It's why Mizu's rejected the term every time Ringo's tried to use it.

It was my interpretation, that the play does not represent any given person , or Miku herself. Rather, both the Ronin and the Bride represent seperate aspects of Mizu's life journey thus far. The Ronin side obviously her quest for vengeance that she initiated in her youth, once she thought her mother died in the hut fire. The Bride representing returning to a semblence of a 'normal' life w/ her resurrected mother, even if its a life chosen by someone else toward her supposed benefit. Persoanlly, i loved the similarity of Ringo returning the bell, a symbol of his relationship with Mizu, similar to Miku 'returning' the very dagger Mikeo once taught her to cut apples off the tree. As for the Nagata, Mikeo stated, "no better weapon when outnumbered". The parallels in this episode go deep and spread across multiple leads. Its brilliantly done. And, using the play as the medium for the viewer to interpolate actions, while sumultaneously prepare us for the Mikeo's betrayal. I dont want to spoil anything, but in a couple episode we'll have to revisit the character growth of mostly all the main characters, but especially Mizu. Im reminded of the message from finale of season 1 of Korra: tLA.

There is some symbolism in the moment that Mizu turned her katana into a polearm or naginata: Traditionally while polearm weapons have been used by all sorts, in Japanese warfare the naginata was the common weapon of choice for Onna-musha which were female warriors that fought alongside samurai. This has given the weapon a common connection to feminine warriors in japanese martial arts and swordplay. The story flashing back to Mizus time attempting to be at her most feminine while also being the moment when she becomes her most fearful self is symbolized by her taking up a naginata as her weapon, embodying that rage and violence from that point in her past.

@@jachyra9 My mistake, I should have mentioned the facet of the home-protection aspect. To be fair, and to further your point actually, the entire mythos surrounding japanese warrior culture such as samurai has been highly romanticized so it would make sense that other elements of that aspect such as the bushi would also be twisted somewhat.

The puppetry form is called Bunraku. Also, It is no coincidence that the writers incorporated past present and 3rd person story telling because that is something that happens in the Bunrarku art form as well, though much more stylised of course. but each thread is begun and converge as the stories unfold, eventually meeting the end collectively, closing a chapter. I couldn't imagine that concept applied so well to something created by western artists for mainstream TV, but here it is: Jo Ha Kyu. Awesome series.

I think there is a tendency to regard Mizu as a hero, and that all she does is right or justified. I think she is a wonderful character, but she doesn't just do *questionable* things - she murders a young woman in order to facilitate her vengeance, she kills the young man outside that she had spared earlier - he was still no threat. She (probably) kills her husband when it's unclear if he betrayed her or not. Her vengeance against the four white men isn't picky either - only one of them can be her father, but she's going to kill all of them just to be sure. She's very flawed.. and we see why, and how badly. I think we want her to be a real hero because we hope that is within her, or perhaps, at least, redemption.

It's horrible that Mizu was betrayed by her husband and mother, but mostly because she was genuinely happy during part of her marriage. And if she could have held back her fighting skills and been able to become something closer to a traditional wife, she might still be happy because the path of revenge isn't doing that for her. I think that's why she says that Akemi is better off going back to her father to be married at the end. It's because she acknowledges that she might have been happier choosing a quiet, married life instead. The betrayal only hurt as much as it did because her own forced marriage had made her genuinely happy for a time, however briefly.

Yes he was saying he loved her at the end but he did call her a monster and apparently did sell the horse he said was hers... and did kill her mother. Tho to be fair, if the mother was the one that turned Mitzu in just for some opium... she might have got what she deserves. 32:40 As a side note, Mizu killing those soldiers, assuming she even could at that point after literally passing out from blood loss, would not have allowed Akemi to have the life she wanted. What she would have gotten was the life she recklessly chose in her hunt for Mizu and Taigen, as a whore catering to clients with peculiar tastes for Madame Kaji. Odds are the next one isn't going to be distracted by a quick poetry session, and Mizu definitely isn't buying the contract of some former princess to drag along on her mission of revenge.

Not to say I approve of how things ended, but I have a certain small degree of sympathy for Mikio. It's so easy to judge his reaction to their match with a modern eye, but I have the benefit of living in a world where women can actually do things unrelated to housekeeping and family making. It would be utterly absurd for a man in his position to have such egalitarian, modern views. The closest we get is Ringo not treating Mizu differently after peachgate, and that's just because she was his master to him more than she was a man. As for Mikio, by the way he was using his naginata, it was clear that he was more "play fighting" in the beginning when Mizu and he were sparring under the tree. He was likely expecting her to be something of a tomboy, interested or even enthusiastic about swordplay, but that he would still win. Their first tussle actually seemed to be going that way. This was less like "show me your skill with a blade'" and more like "show me your weird, unladylike hobby, I promise I won't think less of you for it". In the next couple minutes, he gets mocked for wanting to cancel the session, called a coward, reminded of his fallen station, pressed into full contact naked-blade sparring, soundly thrashed, and has his own weapon pressed to his throat. After all this, his darling wife tries to get frisky with his neck still under her blade. If instead of calling her a monster and storming off, they had just argued about it there. Maybe they could have reasoned with each other, since I absolutely believe their affection was real. People lean really heavily on his wounded masculine pride, referencing the duel, but it's more clearly shown by him re-gifting Kai to his lord. He never managed to tame Kai, Mizu did, but now he might get the credit. His "silly" dream of regaining his position and title may yet happen, and it had just gotten a lot more appealing.

the most interesting thing about this is that if Michio had met Mizu 200 years prior he might have rather admired her skill greatly. Cause there were more skilled women samurais in the Sengoku period and they were praised rather than shunned like they are in the Edo period. Goes to show how much societies can change and how drastically these changes can affect certain specific groups

Yeah, it feels intentional. The three-part structure of the sentence also seems to refer to people she's "discarded" in one way or another: No place for love -> Mikio / Her Mother No place for friendship -> Akemi No place for weakness -> Ringo At this point in the story she seems to think of physical/emotional vulnerability as "playing defense" and responds by "playing offense" instead. I'm guessing that she feels somewhat guilty about letting the guards take Akemi away and is lashing out at Ringo rather than allowing herself to be vulnerable by admitting to that guilt.
