I feel like there's a time and a place for "hi, how's it going?" Like dating/hookup apps or different chats, but emails definitely not. In chats, you're opening up a dialog with another person to have a back and forth. While with emails it makes more sense to include the entirety of what you're trying to say in one message.

Hilariously, Ive been getting more cringey and aggressively flirtatious DMs from non-furries lately. It especially makes me guffaw because my character is a mangey Skaven.

I agree with Beta on this one, when someone just sends “:)” with nothing else, it’s kinda menacing. I just get a small pang of uneasiness, and I don’t really know what to say afterwards, so we just sort of sit there, on that one message for so long

honestly if i get a message with just “hi” it freaks me out. like, i don’t know if they’re gonna ask me for free art or say something creepy to me or what. i try to not respond but also curiosity gets to me. if i do respond, i usually don’t get anything positive out of the interaction.

I received a random message from a furry this one time, me being nice, went along with it. Well, apparently that was there's que to then stalk me. They then proceeded to call me by my first name, something which is not too easy to find considering I never use my first name online, or my name in general. They then ended up trying to follow my social medias which I didn't have linked anywhere, with different names, luckily, it didn't go further then that. Especially since I just ghosted them. I think they wanted to go out with me, but the furry discord server I was in said clearly I was 18+, And they were a minor

Here's another reason I've been thinking of: they might not even know themselves what the convo is about and are just trying to talk to you for the sake of it. Like, imagine I wanted to talk to Beta. I've watched and enjoyed his content and I feel like I want to get to know him better one-on-one. And thus I go to message him. That's when I realize "wait, what am I gonna say?" I didn't plan what I was going to talk about or say, and certainly didn't want to spew random nonsense and hope for the best as that would lead to more questions (am I being too annoying? Does he know what I'm talking about? etc). For this reason, hi/hello messages, I feel, are very easy to fall back on when all else fails. I had no idea what to talk to Beta about and I just wanted to talk for the sake of it. So, just start with a "hi" and see where things go. But say I did say something random. Let's just say I said "the core x boss theme from metroid fusion sounds really awkward to me". I have no idea if he knows what I'm talking about or if he agrees because I just randomly said it. Not only that, but I started the convo _first_ , meaning I had no other indications whether it was safe to say. I just said it, and hoped for the best. I feel these are other reasons behind those messages. They didn't know what to say going in to the convo and didn't want to just say something that, as far as they know, only _they_ know about or felt. So, they just fell back on a simple, basic, and safe "hi" in hopes of getting the other person's attention and hopefully initiating a topic to talk about.

I usually start conversations with "Hello." and wait for the other person to respond because don't know where to go from there and I'm hoping they can come up with something. Online there's just this awkward nothing and I just sit there thinking, "Oh no, they don't like me, oh f__k what do I do?" In person, at least, I can tell they don't care and there's a bit of releif. (Although, even getting to the "Hello." is so much harder). And if they do respond in person, it's right back to "Oh f__k, what should I say next?" and the conversation goes nowhere. Another way of putting it, my conversations are kind of like in an RPG where the protagonist walks up to an NPC and starts a conversation, they say something and the protagonist has 2-3 response options, one of them being, "..." In this analogy, I'm the protagonist but I can't see the other two response options, only leaving "..." so that's what I choose and the conversation ends there, and I'm alone again.

Honestly, anyone online who does the "hi how are you?" right off the bat without you even knowing them I immediately just assume its some 12yo kid on the internet who's bored with zero social skills or, giving the benefit of the doubt here - polite entries to get a conversation started. Like you said, there's literally nothing to work with regarding the context they've given you. I don't intend for this to sound harsh but people really need to break out of their shell and get a little creative with introducing themselves or at least have a plan after reaching out to someone so the convo doesn't flat-line. Personally, I like people who show genuine, relatable interest and aren't simply using you as a means to acquire instant gratification. I know this might sound business-y but ask yourself first, what am I bringing to the table when reaching out to this person? Would this person be on the same page as me in terms of interests, humor, story-telling etc? I think there's a time and place for certain things and the "hi how are you?" quips are more appropriate in an already established friendship/circle.

As someone who has horrid social anxiety I actually do agree. Sometimes I send messages like that myself. But im also self conscious then feel like a weirdo sending those kinda messages honestly. Hard to not do with social anxiety often though. Why im not "in" the fandom haha. Im also similar in I just suck at replying myself due to it even if the convo started well enough. My social energy drains quick and drop off the planet for a month. Sometimes a year(s) with some chats lol. Then suddenly remember it waaaaay later then try to re connect but its already ruined lol. But do agree from the other side cause im a realist haha.

At work, via chat, we often start with just "Hi" in part because we're looking for any response and the shown status may be inaccurate. We expect "Hi" back as a response to show that you're there and the real issue can be brought up. I keep saying "If you have a question for me, just ask. Don't say "Hi" and wait, you or I may forget by the time that my attention becomes available.

I think it depends. I respond to a lot of hi/hello messages because I moderate and don't want to just ghost members of the server if they need help with something. And if they aren't apart of the server I moderate, I don't really mind just saying hi back, and if they ask how I'm doing I just typically say fine, and context on what I'm doing. Convos typically end there. So like, it didn't take up any of my time but also let them know I'm not avoiding them.

As much as I would like to have a mostly odd, hopefully interesting, conversation with you composed of many questions I have. The law I did not write states “Nobody on KZfaq, twitch, or on any other platform is obligated to respond to anyone else for any reason” getting a ResponsE is a luxury not a necessity or entitlement. There are a multitude of vary valid decent reasons someone wasn’t able to get back to said comment. As a reminder that still needs to be said…Twitch Streamers, KZfaq Creators, Tik Tok Creators, are Human Beings, not robots with infinite time to respond to anyone who asks. I’ve lost count how many times I wasn’t responded to, it’s actually, truthfully OkaY to say the least, and understate it.

If I am trying to get someone that doesnt know me to have a conversation with me, I would NEVER just message "Hi". I always make sure I have substance to my message, because I know that the person(if they read it) would be trying to get a gauge of me as a person and what I am trying to achieve with the message. If I come across as too weird, too strong or cross an invisible boundary of some sort the person will not reply. I try to keep my statements "professional" but genuine because (again) this person doesn't know me. I feel that people will DM people with the message of "Hi" or "How are you" because they believe that the person will already not reply, and the simple message of "Hi" is to test whether the person will even interact with the sender.

My opener is usually something to either do with their pfp, or that they mention on their profile. That said, I won't even get to the "opener" stage until I interact with them in public channels on a discord server or in a game or something. Lol

I use :) a lot to kind of show some menacing energy when talking to my friends, but they never see it as menacing because I'm 5'6'' :(

Thanks beta, as someone who has struggles talking to new people, I now have one more thing I know not to do when talking to new people. Start with things they can actually feasibly respond too. Great, now the hard part. Actually finding something to talk to people about hahaha.

I just behave in a generally unapproachable manner, and then people never say hi, in that way the conundrum resolves itself.

I once messaged Beta on Twitter for help in getting a puppy doggo who was set to be put down at a certain date in being adopted, but I think it was probably not a great choice for Twitter as I had no idea whether he looked at Twitter dms much or at all, so I knew it wasn't him not wanting to help or anything like that, I'm just sure he honestly just didn't see it and if he did it was probably after she did end up getting adopted the day before her death date. I mostly just wanted help since I was a smaller creator and harder to notice when I don't have a larger audience or influence. I am just glad the puppy was adopted, and I won't ever hold him who didn't know me accountable if she had ended up being put down. I probably should have been better emailing him instead lol. But it ended in a good way so it honestly wouldn't have mattered if I had messaged him in the first place. I will keep on watching betas vids, and I'm waiting to see if he ever did see it as I would think it would be funny as it was just me saying what the issue was and why I wanted help and then suddenly I was like, oh nvm it's okay now lmao.

I remember I had asked what were the pros and cons of being a furry KZfaqr, what is the type of computer editing software I need to edit videos, and what type of camera and mic should I get? The message was sent back in 2021 on Twitter. No worries I know real life can be busy.

I mean you aren't wrong it's difficult to keep up with everyone, have the time to do it, and to actually get just like "hi" then *wave hand emoji* it's just eah.. it has started with me on TikTok and 19K is not many people to have on a platform, but at the same time it sort of is. I'm going to just assume you already got an answer from your chat, but I'll post my reason anyway. I think the "hi, hello, how are you?" messages are intended for you to respond back "with hi, hello, I'm doing well, how are you?" and to get the conversation started. My interpretation (at least, the reason I always do it regardless of if people hate it or not) is that it's out of politeness, because they want to hear from you before they just hurl the topic of what they really want to talk about at you. To me, jumping right into the meat and potatoes of a conversation seems cold and business-like. It feels like you're just trying to get the conversation over with as quickly as possible, rather than taking the time to get to know the person you're conversing with. Granted, I can understand that if you're interacting with hundreds of people all the time, just getting a "hi, how are you" all the time can get annoying. Plus, maybe you're some popular furry and you don't have time to get to know every single pleb that messages you because you're doing art or something. But even with the people I know very well, I still go through small talk with them, because maybe their day was awful or their day was terrific and they really want to tell me about it before we both get sidetracked with what I was intending on talking about with them. That's even if I had a topic to begin with lol.

I dont have a Problem with "how are you" questions, I in general think there neat and I do them myself sometimes. But yet im not a known JT'ber/Streamer so I dont have that kind of problem with people I dont know, but it doesnt matter if your close friends to someone or just a friend if your just sending (Primarly on telegramm i encountered it with more than one person) one sticker. like a sticker with a "questioning" emoji, or a sticker with a "shocked" emoji, were I dont know how to respond. Its ok if you do that sometimes but if I have to get the Information out of you like interigation all the time im not only loosing interest in answering im also getting annoyed. Eh, so you hate small talk. I think most people do. It's kind of an evil device created by neurotypicals to make it appear as if you don't want something from someone. all a "hi, how are you?" in DMs really requires of you is the same in return followed by "what's up?". It just puts the ball back in their court to either get to the point or become interesting really fast. It doesn't make sense to use it outside of maybe a chat room, a DM, or face to face. Email or Phone? No, tell me what you want!! On the other hand most people don't really call/email me unless someone's dying or about to be. Honestly email itself is effectively a dead medium these days. I don't think I know anyone that checks theirs with any regularity. 🤷 It's kind of funny though considering it's almost the sole means of communication most businesses use today. also :) Sorry, couldn't resist.🤣
