Yes, it's great. Very dramatic too. I'll admit I have to make an effort to clear out the thought that this was recorded in a city that was truly at the Heart of Darkness (yes, some of the people who attended this concert may have been involved with crushing the Warsaw ghetto uprising a year later, an unspeakable paradox) but there is no denying the courage and dedication of Furtwängler and the Philharmonic.

Of course this is not the greatest, even Furtwangler would not agree with you, since this interpretation is a demonic one, a way to express his refusal to cooperate with nazism.

@MegaClassicguy 6 жыл бұрын
This is totally true that this recording expresses Furtwangler’s refusal of the nazi regime. But this is considered nevertheless by many critics as the best interpretation ever. Simon Rattle wrote a long text on this recording a few years ago to explain that this is the only recording that expresses what Beethoven wanted.

And this recording is not demonic at all. It is always described as apocalyptic, which is totally different. There is a condamnention of the nazi regime: especially the end of the first movement. It sounds like the announcement of the final judgment and has been compared with Michelangelo’s fresco of the final judgment in Rome.

And then we continue to consider WHO would have been in the audience that day...There is video from another performance of Beethoven's masterpiece played on Hitler's birthday the next month, and in that one, Goebbels is clearly seen in the audience.. Heydrich could easily have been there too, if he came on a visit from Prague. The paradox of these superb performances of a work that appeals to brotherhood and peace being played during the darkest and most shameful age in German history is just mind-boggling.

This interpretation renders at best the true definition of joy: something we truly enjoy after long periods enduring and suffering its exact opposites, namely anger, sadness, loneliness, hopelessness and all sorts of pain!

Greatest memory from my trip to Berlin: my tour guide breaking out into Ode to Joy at the statue of Frederick the Great at Bebelplatz square. Furt-vén-gler.

@@opera93 Furtwängler, of course, was no Nazi (I'm sure you knew that) - he knew early on, that Hitler was really not what Germany or Europe needed. Their first face to face encounter in early 1933 descended into an angry shouting match, and Willi told his wife that he now knew Hitler was a danger to the country and could not be trusted at all (or something to that effect). But he remained in Germany not least to try to protect its leading orchestras (including the Vienna PO) from Nazi interference.

Astonishing recording quality! I think that I'll make a recording of it and EQ it a bit. Take out a bit of the bass.

Are we sure this recording is authentic? The sound quality is quite good. Way better than the 1954. version here on KZfaq. And some parts are very fast. Quite anachronistic to say the least.

At the time I was regularly attending the Met I knew what was going on with conductor. I had been told by a friend who knew someone connected to the situation and who could be believed. Yet I had to sit there and watch the audience fawn over this horrible person. I, too, had to separate this man from the music I so loved. It's something each individual must either accept or reject.
