I really like how Norman is the one getting shit because he's the new guy, never done anything like this, never seen war, certainly never lived through it like this crew already has, but in this scene, talking about one of the worst things a person can possibly experience, even Boyd is off to the side, not saying anything, because he knows it's not that simple. He knows how horrible it is and how much he'd rather not do it. See, this movie does a great job with the horror of war, it's never glorified by the veterans Norman's fighting with, and there's one who probably hates it just as much as he does. To the others, it's just what needs to be done. Shows that even those who live through it, participate in it, find it just as horrible and disturbing as anyone else.

This is practically the only scene where Gordo wasn't being nasty to poor Norman and the one black man in the whole movie actually had some dialogue. Did the editor think that one relatively normal conversation without any ball-busting would ruin the movie? They definitely should have left it in.
@eraldorh5 жыл бұрын
Movies always have hours of dialogue that they have to cut from movies so that it fits in with the studios time frame which is usually 2 hours. People dont like sitting down for much longer than that which is why movies tend to end long before that so come editing time they usually edit out scenes they feel dont influence the story very much. This scene didnt really add much to the movie in the grand scheme of things so its a scene that could afford to be cut. Wtf has this scene having the only black guy speaking in it got to do with anything, theres no rule that says a movie has to have a black guy in it nor does it say that there has to be a black guys speaking in it.

They should have left this scene in. It definitely adds some backstory to Norman, as well as show his extreme unfamiliarity with war and killing. Not that the ending didn't have an obvious impact on his character, but a scene like this would have proven to show more emotion in the end. How being in that war for only one day could have an impact on him for the rest of his life.
@TheBarber55507 жыл бұрын
crankiestchipANDdip I think this scene was deleted because of the African American soldier. he's no where else in the movie, so he might be a deleted character. Keeping a scene with a deleted character in the movie wouldn't make sense.

My grandpa who was in WWII didn't seem to have a problem talking about killing a man. The time you have bullets flying over your head you figure out whether you're going to fight to live another day, or you're going home early in a box."

I read a book about a German machine gunner on the Eastern Front. In this book there was a moment when his division attacked an enemy position with lots of trenches. The Russians were caught by surprise, started fleeing in panic and many of them dropped their weapons. But he simply mowed down all those defenceless, fleeing soldiers he could hit. After a flamethrower tank drove inside the trenches and started to roast the soldiers who were hiding there and he heard their terrible screams and smelled the horrible scent of burned human flesh he suddenly came back to himself and realized what he just had done. He described it as some kind blood frenzy he was in. He just wanted to kill as many enemy soldiers as possible and didn't think about the fact that they are normal people who are scared of dying and have families who wait for their return, too.

@TheSkyWhale I do not wish to offend, so please take my comment as nothing more than experience talking: This scene where Brad Pitt's SSG character maligned and mistreated his crew would not happen...period. The feeling of camaraderie between soldiers (who do not know each other) during wartime is a bond that sometimes feels stronger than family. I understand that Brad Pitt's character was trying to connect with Norman and share a moment with him and the crew interrupted that, but this was to bring Norman INTO the fold -not alienate his crew. We fight like families do, in the military; we do not let outsiders get between us. The best example is you might call your own brother an asshole, but you don't do it in front of strangers, and you damn sure do not let anyone else do it.

The scene after the bombing when they are quietly riding on the tanks and that long stare is pretty much the movie's summary of Wardaddy's relationship with Norman. He saw Norman as his little brother that was killed (with help from the other deleted scene), was the same age as Norman and also called Norman. He saw how Emma's death broke him, so it was almost like he was taking care of him as he would have his brother if he were still alive. He may have seen himself in Norman before he went to war-clearly he was educated, just jaded. The scene was necessary, but even without the deleted scene I got the same feel about the moment, just with a bit less context. Sometimes less is more in this case.

The thing about this scene is bible is the trigger man. Gordo is the driver, the big dude loads the gun, wardaddy leads (but he’ll pop the hatch and shoot if necessary) but bible and Norman are the trigger men. Bible is silent about how to kill a man, even though he is the one controlling the main gun on the tank. He’s the one who fires and sees the end results of what he does. But yet he’s silent the whole time during this conversation on how it feels to kill a man.

There are still 14 year olds working in slaughterhouses today, and there were weak 14 year olds in the 1940's. The only difference is that the internet shows us alot more of the weak 14 year olds we have today.

i kinda understand now why they deleted all these scenes from the movie. it gives alot of backstory to each character wich is a real good thing but i think the director wanted to give it a different vibe and not let these guys talk personally that early in the movie

It's funny but many of these deleted scenes, if left in, would definitely "slow the movie down"; but leaving them in would make it seem more real, like it's actually happening because in real life, life often really IS this slow, as when you're contemplating the deeper things in life with your buddies.

Watching this now, some thoughts come to mind: I know it's a deleted scene so the editing probably wasn't final at all, but the rain sounds are interesting to me. When Gordo and the black soldier give their advice and opinions, the rain sound muted and distant. As Norman asks about killing, the rain becomes noticeably louder and sounds eerily like blood pouring onto the ground. When the black soldier is talking about heroes and cowards, the rain sounds more distant. As if his just beliefs allow him to ignore most of the rain. Gordo's mindset is much simpler and blunt, and you can clearly hear the rain hitting the tarp. Though he is shielded from the rain, the sound of the tarp is ever-present, just like his experiences in the slaughter house. Also Boyd's presence is so easy to miss, like he's there with the group, but he's quiet in his own thoughts. It's Norman's question about killing that lures Boyd back into the conversation and topic at hand. Upon the realization of "better to kill than be killed", you see Boyd's eyes staring before looking down in shame. It's as if in that second, Boyd flashed back to all the times he as the gunner, caused death upon the enemy. The sheer elation and joy to have won and more importantly survived. Yet the incredible guilt and shame he felt from his faith and his inability to reconcile these seemingly incompatible ideals and emotions. Thus the trifecta. Gordo deals with war by boozing and not overthinking things. The black soldier chooses to believe in idealistic values and beliefs, despite being shown how naive and stupid this is by Gordo. (Note how the black soldier is the first to leave and walk out, something about "dying a hero or living long enough to become the villain"?) And Boyd has his faith, which normally is a strength, but doesn't provide Boyd with all the answers. He stands over Norman's right shoulder and squeezes reassuringly, acknowledging that war is a difficult, messy odyssey, with no "right" answer. We don't see Boyd's face at all, just his strong hand and body, as if he is a father himself, trying to awkwardly comfort his son. We see the flash of a marriage ring, a sign of faith and devotion. It's like Boyd wants to tell Norman to keep the faith, but at the same time he can't get past his own doubts and struggles with religion.

The one scene where Shia LeBeouf's character doesn't say a thing, yet has such a large impact. He's one of the two guys in that tank crew that regularly pulls the trigger to send men to their deaths, so he knows what's going through the rookie's head.

How often did segregated units actually mingle when in theatre? I know units were segregated between blacks and non-blacks but ultimately, when units met up, often do you think they...mingled?

Uh no, the actor didn't get replaced, he was still in the movie being shown riding a horse in city. This was just a scene where they were hanging out at the cottage before their first battle.

It wouldn’t be hard. The owner of the Blu-ray or the files would just cut and paste the pieces in even if it’s raw cutting still would be better.

Sam Fuller would have left this scene in. Movie should have been longer. The longer, deeper and darker, the more that hero line stings at the end.

I've been to combat, Iraq. This isn't a subject to be treated lightly. They did a great job. You get desensitized to it. It can be easy to see the enemy/bad guys as cattle or pigs going to the slaughterhouse. Others just... Accept it all. It's a struggle in some ways. For my perspective, you don't really think about it. It became mechanical... Something happened, then we fired back, cease fire, inspect area, report damage, check individuals that fired on us, etc... The worst was going through the dead and checking their biometrics (fingerprints) on our shitty little handheld devices. It usually was up to me since I was an interrogator. Shit was crazy. Now, I can't stand flies. I hate flies with a passion.

+Clash2 Clash2 Thats a good question - in WW2 units were segregated. For example - the 761st Tank Battalion was all black. Patton loved them. Said "I want those bastards". The 332nd Fighter Group were an all black unit. Bombers loved them. Don't know who this guy was.
