In this video, we explore the fossil vitra technique. We will be using actual leaves to create beautiful designs. We will work with two different mediums, frit powder and mica.
All the glass I use is Bullseye 90 COE.

If you use a thin metal spatula, it helps in moving the leaves to the fiber. I’ve even sprinkled the powder on the leaf with the leaf sitting on the spatula. Thanks for this. It gives me some additional needed info. Just subscribed!

Why fibre paper and not just thinfire Great video Thank you I love watching your videos

I believe the fiber paper absorbs the heat better than thinfire and reduces the chances of thermal shock cause by the burn off of the organic matter.

Thanks for the great video! I have lots of dried fall leaves so want to try this. The one you made with fall leaves look more natural in color. How did you make it? Sandwitched the leaves in between clear glasses without glass/mica powder?
@ghislainesabbagh-hughes
@ghislainesabbagh-hughes 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! No, it was done the same way. I mention in the video that you should never sandwich the leaves because it will create very large bubbles. I just played around and mixed various frit powders to get those colors.

I’m wondering if you could use a single layer of glass on the first fuse (over mica leaf), then flipped and capped it with clear and a full fuse?
@ghislainesabbagh-hughes
@ghislainesabbagh-hughes Жыл бұрын
If you full fuse a 3mm piece of glass, it will try to reach a 6mm thickness during fusing and create dog boning a the sides. You could try going with a lower temperature, like a tack fuse but I'm not sure you'd get the same results. Then if you were to add another piece of glass underneath and full fuse, you may get a lot of bubbling where the mica is because of the cavity that was left behind by the leaf and therefore a gap between the two pieces of glass. I hope that all makes sense!

@@ghislainesabbagh-hughes yes it does make sense. I might try to contour fuse the single layer, them flip and dust with clear before capping. I’ll let you know if it works😉

@@clivekitchener1625 I was just logging back on to say that dusting with clear frit may help! Great minds think alike! Keep us posted.

how long do you dry the leaves? I have old paper catalogs and phone books to use.. Love the mica effect.. would this work with single layer instead of 2/ yes, probable dog-boning. Thanks
@ghislainesabbagh-hughes
@ghislainesabbagh-hughes 2 жыл бұрын
It took about three weeks to dry fresh leaves. It wouldn’t really work with a single layer because we are taking it to a full fuse. You would indeed get a lot of dog boning.

Love this! What, if anything, do you do to dry the leaves? Just lay them out or do they get pressed between something?

Do you scrape the mica off so it doesn't keep shedding mica?

I didn't want to mess with it but maybe spraying it with some type of sealant would help.

Hi Have you ever tried to put the mica covered leaves between two layers of glass (to avoid the mica texture on the back) Thanks
@ghislainesabbagh-hughes
@ghislainesabbagh-hughes 2 жыл бұрын
Putting the leaf between the two pieces of glass would create really huge bubbles and would work. You could tack fuse a piece after the fact if you want but the piece would get very thick.

Is it just moisture in the stamping pad that you use with mica.
