I wasn't sure what it did, but found this in a Siemens document "The Fusesaver is designed to either:• Be installed in series with the fuse. When it senses a fault current, it will open before the fuse can melt, and stay open for a pre-determined time (dead time) to clear a transient fault. Then, the Fusesaver closes again reconnect-ing supply. This is the traditional Open-Close Fusesaver approach• Replace the fuse altogether. When installed in this manner the Fusesaver can perform the same Open-Close function-ality as above to clear a transient fault but can also perform a second “Open” operation to clear a permanent fault."

I think it acts as a recloser but instead of locking out open, it will close and burn up the fuse then it will open.

Typically they are intended to prevent the fuses blowing as you mentioned and as the name suggests, some older type fuses such as the expulsion drop out fuses, in lower fault current situations can candle and not clear which creates fire hazards and other issues downstream. They can also blow out molten metal everywhere which is not ideal. The other benefit is that field crews won't need to go out and replace so many fuses which is a pain. These are great in rural fire prone areas. The only issue is supplying them. It is likely that a number are sitting on the network dead due to insufficient current supply on the line. Solar panels and batteries have been used but unsure how future proof that is. These are remotely controlled in my area so the protection / faults crew would be immediately be alerted and send a crew to investigate. Although these are technically an isolating device they can't be treated as such due to the internal clearances within the vacuum chamber being unsuitable for isolation, hence why another form of isolation is required such as the fuses or hinged blade isolators which can be visually confirmed as open.

This was interesting, just a comment but it is always good to practice demonstrating you understand the equipment is carrying the load or current properly before removing these primary jumpers by hand. An example would be to check the amperage on the outside and inside of the jumper to ensure enough of the load is being carried. You could check again on the jumpers of the fuse saver device. In our area with extremely high load we always check this when making jumpers especially for 900 amp disconnect switches.

Siemens Fusesaver. In the Netherlands we have no overheadlines, only underground networks. It is a Nice Solutions to protect the HV Fuses with a vers quick mini circuitbreaker

It’s interesting to me that they didn’t have to skin the phase and that it’s just tightened down on the jacketing

Yeah it just sits on the wire that clamp isn't doing anything besides holding it up. They do make strip less stirrups and other types of connectors that have teeth to pierce through that type of tree wire though. For a hotline clamp.

so what does the fuse saver let you do turn of remotely or does it trip.

Yeah I’m still trying to figure out what it does exactly. They mentioned it has an RC function. We have something called an ALS switch or trip saver. Maybe it’s the same function. But it sits in the switch itself in place of the fused barrel and has an RC control built in and will drop open automatically. We don’t like it much.

according to siemens' website, fuse saver can detect, open and clear a fault in as little as one-half cycle (10ms) and is configurable to either protect or replace the fuse. It can also isolate permanently faulted line segments or isolate sections for repair.

Man of Culture sounds like a fast acting circuit breaker with a fuse as the final OCD , I guess if a tree brushes the line the fuse saver trips and resets ?

I have a question, why was the wire left bare? Wouldn't that cause corrosion over time?
@ElectroTree01
@ElectroTree01 Жыл бұрын
It does. When making a connection to something, you brush the wire to remove oxidation. Usually the wire is bare.

@@ElectroTree01 The wire is insulated not so much for corrosion but for electrical insulation. Also helps with capacitance.

@@ElectroTree01 Eversource mostly uses Hendrix "tree" cable which is partially insulated to reduce outages from light contact with branches, limbs, etc. Otherwise ordinary jacketed cable is not insulation per se, it covers the conductor to reduce oxidation.

Eversource smart fuse... Added reliably saves company money not having to send someone out to inspect the fault. Cutting a job. Reliable sure as long as the wire isn't on the ground on a car, in the water killing animals which has happened, and kids in the past... Super smart fuses Ride it out visual
