One of my favourite things about this game is how Kojima and co. accepted their limitations when designing this thing: They built up a studio and designed a brand new IP from the ground up on a new engine (which they apparently even made improvements or changed to, to fit their model!) in four years, was it? That’s crazy! Even the online components being kept asynchronous fits within their parameters; they must have known that there was no way they could get decent online multiplayer going in that time, without sacrificing quality in one area or another. And all of this fits neatly with the themes of the game, too. The beauty of living within our means.

An interesting thing to note on the topic of the connection between America and Nazi Germany and roads and bridges: During the Battle of the Bulge, Dwight Eisenhower and the other Army generals noticed something particular about the autobahn. One mile out of every five was completely straight, enabling the Luftwaffe to land its planes nearly anywhere in the country that the autobahn went. This had made it difficult to fight against the German air fighters, but obviously didn't stop us. The autobahn had impressed Eisenhower, however. [EDIT: SEE BELOW FOR FURTHER STATEMENTS ON ACCURACY, COMMENT PRESERVED HERE FOR HISTORICAL PURPOSES] Years later, once Eisenhower had been elected president, he went on to found the US's Interstate Highway System, which itself also requires a straight mile out of every five for emergency aircraft landings. But anyway it's ironic that one of the most "populist" things about the US, its federal road system, came directly from Nazi Germany, from an American who was there himself.

@@chell272 You're right, I just heard this from my family who are actually in the road building business, but looking it up it isn't true about the 1 mile in 5 thing. Looking this up it reminded me, though, that another thing that inspired Eisenhower was that after he graduated from West Point, he was put in charge of a military convoy whose only task was to deploy from the White House to San Fransisco. They encountered many troubles back then, 1919, trying to make it coast to coast using our nation's own infrastructure, and the whole journey took them over 60 days. This mission also led Eisenhower to be inspired to make our federal roads much better than they had been before that point. That whole Army Expedition thing really reminds me of BRIDGES 1, as well.

I was an absolute emotional wreck for a lot of this game but also the happiest I have ever been, my daughter put perspective on everything in my life, my job, my 'status', my worries, my wants, my needs, none of it matters in the end, the only thing that matters are the connections you make. I thank Kojima to this day for creating such an emotional masterpiece and I can not wait to experience DS2.

It’s the Minecraft of walking simulators, and the Eurotruck Simulator of fetch quests - digital games aren’t much more than a combination of this; Death Stranding stripped down to mechanical brass tacks and manages to make every item/combat addition substantively shift the meta of navigation and combat. Prescient, as _Foxdie,_ S3 Colonel Cambell, and word viruses (recent linguistic study on English morphology being more conducive to spreading droplets) - it delivered novelty and ingenuity without overpromising. The take or leave occult and political presences verge on the sinister, but the core confrontation with death is poignant and sincere; what other game could get away with what is in essence, an anti-abortion/suicide metaphor? A post-modern gaming experience without the yolk of ironic distance. Forgivably ham/melodramatic where lines fall flat, and carried by the sheer weight of A-list film world talent.

Future is in our hands, in hands of every individual but we as a society are failing to deliver this message. Right now we are being told that individual matters, his achievement matters, his contributions matters but to what end? I've been taught in school to be self-sufficient machine and i am and i'm completely lost when work needs to be collective. Thankfully, Death Stranding and MGS games showed me the power of cooperation, and in better ways than society itself. I think individual centered society is good and we are simply in need of realization that every action and word IRL or on the net is our legacy, our contribution to the future. Just my thoughts, thank you for reading and happy holidays

Excellent defense of this game. Loved everything about the game other than the beach sequence towards the end where I had to walk aimlessly until scripted scenes kicked in - also the princess beach line kind of hurt to watch lol. The ending cutscenes are an incredible achievement of storytelling and performance capture. Beat it over quarantine and unlike a lot of modern AAA games, I won't forget this unique story any time soon. I wish more people would give this game a chance. Honestly, anyone who hadn’t seen the trailers probably expected the game to cut to black with Sam and Amelie running on the beach, and that would’ve made for an absolutely terrible ending... which I believe was kind of the point. I think the “Princess Beach” sequence was used to poke fun at the way a lot of AAA games tend to end; with unresolved plot points or cliffhangers that setup sequels or DLC. It was Kojima both acknowledging and giving the middle finger to games that don’t know how to properly wrap things up.

The interpretation that "Sam is not the main character" is brilliant. Because when you think about it, everyone is more important and fit the power fantasy more than Sam. There's Cliff the vengeful ghost father, Higgs the highest DOOMS carrier, Fragile the teleporter who's the one who has a back story with the main villain, and Die-Hardman the right hand of the president. All of these characters could've been the protagonist but no, it's Sam. This deliveryman who has the lowest DOOMs count and who's job is solely to deliver and reconnect isolated cities.

Death Stranding is wonderfully original while woefully mistuned. So many of the game's mechanics never have a chance to shine because they're too easy to circumvent with less compelling play options. Doing well in the game will often mean working towards a less fun version of the game (like a mediocre driving sim). The game also betrays its own "no dying" premise by having game over screens for some failed deliveries. Speaking of failed deliveries... the writing here is something else. And what's up with having difficulty settings? Why?
@decimatormdt54533 жыл бұрын
"So many of the game's mechanics never have a chance to shine because they're too easy to circumvent with less compelling play options" I agree ... Same thing could be said about metal gear as well. That's a really good point. "Working towards a less fun version of the game" This I don't agree with necessarily, because of the sense of achievement you get after Doing the fun gameplay and then reaching.... Well ... A goal of making things easier. Not to mention the effect of timefall on structures which need constant repair and that allows... I guess a little bit more fun gameplay 👍. "The game betrays it's own "no dying" premise by having game over screens for some failed deliveries" I mean ... Those are fail states. Sam has repatriation so he is invincible... Is that the premise you're referring to? The next point I'm going to skip cause it's kinda subjective and I respect your opinion. I'm only interested in fact checking. "what's up with having difficulty settings?" Well ... So u can have difficulty settings 🙂

I played offline on hard mode and made very little use of overpowered items, like ziplines. I wanted to enjoy the game, and I was able to make it fun for myself. It’s not meant to be fun forever, I eventually tire of it and take long breaks before picking it up again. That’s why I like it: Death stranding wants the same thing as I do, for me to have fun on my own terms. They did good with the parameters they set themselves, I think (“they” being the devs). Games can’t be everything.
@Maxx__________3 жыл бұрын
@@decimatormdt5453 the difficulty settings seem to only affect the few boss fights, and not to any benefit to the game. Making those harder doesn't add anything to the experience and the rest of the game is exactly the same. Having Sam be repatriated is a neat gameplay mechanic to avoid fail states, so it's odd to have them shoved back in for less compelling reasons. Just my opinion though. And I'm all for struggling for accomplishment. The ziplines were good, imo. But building roads in the early mid game seems to divert the game away from its strengths towards far less compelling driving back and forth. It's a minor complaint, overall.
@Maxx__________3 жыл бұрын
@@BigDaddyWes It's a bit of a cop out though, isn't it? You could say that about any game, with the implication that it's up to players to make the game enjoyable and not the developers. But I did enjoy Death Stranding quite a bit in the mid game, just that a lot of its compelling systems went largely unused. You could blame that on me for not going out of my way to use every system, but that's exactly what I mean by a lack of tuning or focus in the game.

how can one describe death stranding, and what are the key lessons the game is trying to convey. never in the history of gaming we found a game discussing these two key elements of human behavior. we live in a world where individualism is the norm, these two behaviors are dying out. but, what are these two two key elements of human behavior? did we ever use them in our through out our human civilization? the game revolves around these two main deep forgotten necessities to human existence, No 1- Altruism and No 2- Reciprocal Altruism. that's the true meaning of the game.
@Angels-3xist3 жыл бұрын
From 27:45 on everything you said really added something. It’s not easy to interpret much less express alot of this. This game speaks without words what many people over the history of time couldn’t say by any means and may not be able to when they should. That itself is a proactive duty someone can take up. This story will ask you what side of the coin you’re on. It will encourage you take your time to think, to connect and understand what you can then act on that if you can or if you want to. You are free to choose, but most of us know what our choices are. If you let it or if you need it to, this game will speak to you and you will probably be better for it. At the very least it will give you something beautiful and entertaining to do. The messages and meanings behind this game are the most important in life to me personally and I think alot of people who feel strongly about the story here may feel the same way. The difficulty in saying what’s important here is about how profoundly difficult it is to say something profound. If something is meaningful to you, it’s worth trying to start expressing why. I wish more people would do that about what they believed in or what spoke to them. The difference between all life and all death is in what we are trying to say, what the truth is and how we act on it. Which part means life and which part means death and what do you believe?

Some of my friends complained about some troubles when they were playing, which is usually about the terrain being too difficult to navigate. But during my playthrough I've yet to run into these sorts of problems. Later I found out that it's mainly due to me being me, an overcautious Asian, tend to plan my route to the very last detail, using the 3D map to avoid all difficult terrain, pre-plan what supply I should carry and carry as less as possible. So, naturally, during my playthrough, Sam never suffered from any severe injuries, fatigue, or ran into any kind of nasty and unsolvable trouble. Although that very playthrough lacks the thrill and dynamic, I'm still pretty proud of it, cause to me, that means I made Sam & Lou & all the cargos that our clients cherish very safe.
@DjDolHaus863 жыл бұрын
My biggest gripe with the gameplay loop is not that it's samey but that it's so easy to work out how to exploit the mechanics. The first time you've got to go to a location it's exciting, fresh and enjoyable but within two or three trips you've worked out the easiest route and you could do it with your eyes shut. The first time you encounter BTs or Mules it's exciting, fresh and tense but unless you've got the memory of a fish it quickly becomes obvious how to deal with them methodically and easily. As for the online vs. offline experience I've played it both ways twice and watched a few playthroughs to see if maybe I was just unlucky with my runs but it was basically the same every time. The same stuff appears in the same places with little exception apart form those relatively inconsequential tags. Things never get finished without your input and things beyond ropes and ladders seldom randomly appear in places. By this stage I'm pretty much convinced that interaction between worlds is just an illusion. I also have to disagree with your opinion on "how you approach a delivery matters" both in concept and in execution. The concept isn't new, it's standard objective management, you read the mission description and prioritise whatever it tells you to do, simple. As for "no standard approach for all missions" there really is one - you work out the fastest, easiest route, you clear the route of hazards (BTs don't come back and Mules have a long respawn time or can be simply evaded) and smooth difficult terrain with tools, you then run the route over and over and over. It really is that simple, I'd worked this system out before leaving the first area. This returns to my opening point, the game is easy to work out and exploit, it's not even an abusive or meta strategy, just basic logic.
@3ld00N3 жыл бұрын
are you redoing the same deliveries over and over again or something? I rarely returned to any of the delivery locations unless required by the main story, also, there's no way you didnt see new constructions unless you played the entire game in one sitting, i'd see new bridges and structures overnight after I saved my game before making a delivery. also, approaching a delivery does matter, you mentioned how you cleared the route of enemies but also mentioned they can be simply evaded. so which is it? is there a standard approach for deliveries or not?
@DjDolHaus863 жыл бұрын
@@3ld00N I've S-ranked all of the deliveries in multiple playthroughs, to do so requires going back and forth over the same routes a lot. You might be surprised to find those "new" bridges and structures appear in every game, this is what I noticed, different names on the structure but near identical placement. As for the cleared/evaded thing lets take the run up to Mountain Knot City from the North Distribution Centre as an example - You can clear the mule territory at the foot of the mountain if you want to make life easier but it will respawn eventually and this becomes tedious, you can also just drive through it fast and avoid enemy contact without much effort or getting off track, they're pretty dumb (clear or evade). The run up the mountain itself through the valley needs to be cleared of BTs to allow efficient progress, these won't come back and once cleared you won't get slowed down by the annoying cutscene that plays when you stray into BT territory (I hear you can turn that off now?). Just take as many grenades and bloodbags as you can carry and go play shoot fish in a barrel, they're extremely easy to kill and barely react to your actions unless you get super close. You don't have to clear all the BTs, they don't move around much so you can just cut a path through if you like, this approach was useful in the first map area when going over the mountains to reach lake knot city as clearing all of them from the terrain was a pain. Once you've got your routes established it's a breeze, you could pretty much do it with your eyes shut. You've circumvented the difficult terrain and enemies and now it's just fedex simulator taking boxes of crap from one place to another for people who only pretend to care because you're useful to them. I wouldn't mind so much if there was more nuance to finding the best routes but it's blatantly obvious where you should be going. You can just circumvent this entire game with ziplines as well, once you've got a network of these things going everywhere it's just like catching a train. You just hop on and with minimal fuss arrive at your destination with no bother and in good time. Having this set up made the return journey from west to east coast an absolute joke, I literally didn't stop until the boss battle.

Death Stranding is a paradox. It’s literally one of the most boring games I’ve ever played. But I loved every second of it. It turned monotonous boring walking into a legitimately unique experience. Your connection with other players, the ability to help others in tiny or big ways makes the boring nature of your job worth it. Finding supplies needed to finish a delivery, coming across a climbing rope that someone planted to make your trip just a tiny bit easier. Building a bridge, or finishing a highway to help others make their deliveries. The connection with other people is what makes the boring monotonous nature of life worthwhile. Despite living in a cruel and indifferent world full of pain, we can all take comfort in the fact that we’re not alone in our suffering, other people are there to help carry the load, no matter how little the gesture. We’re never completely alone.

Just two bits of criticism from someone who loved the game and literally did every single delivery on S (legend) rank: - The boss battles are laughably underwhelming, not only considering the game fully embraces supernatural and sci fi but how the fights actually play it out. I understand, in terms of balancing the game, the Boss fights that you fight in the open world being less of a threat so you have time to get/protect your cargo but the scripted ones should act like more aggressively, like in a proper boss fight, even on very hard I have little to worries in any Boss fight, which brings the second topic... - The difficulty options are straight up BADLY BALANCED and UNCREATIVE, this might not be a real problem for the average player but the harder difficulty options were lazily done. There's no new mechanics, no new nuances on how to manage your bars or planning routes and the enemies with lethal weapons simply deal more damage, they don't have any new behavior pattern, they don't become more "intelligent", and all of this gets more aggravated since the game don't have a proper "combat" system and enough variety of weapons to at least make the encounters more enjoyable and it gets specially worse in Boss battles, they become a drag devoid of any enjoyment because the bosses become a damage black hole.

Don't think of these bosses as enemies ... Think of them as a way to get a bunch of chiral crystals ... I'm not saying your criticisms aren't valid, they are and I agree with them 100% I'm just saying try to focus on gaining likes the most in this game instead. I think the fun factor is in the likes after experiencing most of everything I'm beginning to notice that a lot of these criticisms come from a power fantasy perspective ya know? Like you'd rather be playing another game that is focused on combat and difficult AI that you can overcome. Honestly the game did soooooooooo many things right, I'm just glad this game exists ya know? Ofcourse there's flaws! Ofcourse there's room for improvement! But OH MY GOD HOW DOES A GAME LIKE THIS EXIST IT'S SO UNIQUE.

@@decimatormdt5453 considering the bosses don't offer any challenge in any difficulty, power fantasy has nothing to do with it and like I said, the ones in the open world I let it pass because i can see them being a problem if too aggressive but at same time I think they should get more aggressive if you attacked them back, and on the matter of chiral Crystals... isn't way more easy going just clearing up a BT zone? Well any of this doesn't applies to the scripted boss fights, I remember feeling threatened when I saw the first BT Higgs summoned until I noticed I could literally stay still and it would took at least 30 seconds before attacking, honestly a "don't let the BT get near the city" objective would at least make that fight memorable. And now we come to Cliff... the Battlefields are stunning and very immersive but it's all for a fancy looking Terrorist encounter? Weirdly enough, Higgs' boss fights were the best, they were fun, creative and memorable ( not on harder difficulties tho )

Can agree. Higgs fked me up one time though. Got to the knife phase and he just stands their, I run and try to punch, but he ports behind me and slashes, try to turn and and punch and he does the same thing. I try to run and he throwing knifes me and stuns me. He just kept teleporting around me and slashing and stabbing on some anime stuff. After that he was his usual self, but he just went Dante Must Die on me for some reason.

I actually loved this game more after my second play through where I played offline and could only build within my own limitations.

Great video - As an old S.T.A.L.K.E.R fan and Spintires player, i did find a lots of familiar vibes in DS. And what bothered "reviewers" was an old shoe to me. Journey is indeed sometimes the destination. What did take me by surprise and earned my respect to Kojima and Kojima production. after love/hate relationship with MGSV, is how polished, mechanically deep, graphically stunning and hearth felt that game is. It swallowed me whole like a sea of tar. And yes, as fresh father my self I did have to wipe tears of my face, several times. Holy Shit. DS is amazing. Playable Art!

Your reading of the game lines up a lot with the papers I've written on it. You might be the only other person I know of who picked up the messaging about pollution and climate change, despite it literally being in the title if the game. I think another interesting angle for another video could be the game's messaging on mental illness and suicide in the context that it's a Japanese game and the country has a lot of those issues due to the overly demanding nature of school and many jobs there.

To your original point: I had a very hard time with the game and was aware of the stuff people left. I was also vaguely aware of the "like" mechanic. Then I watched content creators when I was halfway through the game and became inspired to push on. I don't do social media so I had a cynical view of "likes" until I started just thanking people for ladders they left. Then about 80% through the game I turned into a helper. I didn't want people to "like" what I did, I wanted people to use what I left and that turned into me just wanting to basically become a stair for others. I couldn't have learned the meaning on my own and after a few days in the game I turned into someone who would be damned if anyone else had to do it alone either. Heck I'm a father, my son's have always learned some form of selfishness I taught them but they got to witness what it meant to others and to me.

I built the entire highway and set up a massive zipline network in my game world. I wonder if it's still there.
