I like the idea of the bathroom under the stairs. The kitchen I would keep as you plan and putting a glass door to go out onto a balcony/deck for breakfast meals or diners at night

I would go for the bathroom under the stairs - most practical and you don´t destroy the lovely light coming in through the big window in the livingroom. 😊👍

Instead of an extra window in your kitchen , can you also make garden doors to a veranda? So that you can open the garden doors in the summer, and sit on the veranda and have breakfast or lunch....

I love toilets under the stairs. They are often built that way in England, and I love the cozy vibe of being in there. Plus, it's a super convenient and short way from the door when spending much time outside.

My vote would be utilise the space under the stairs for a toilet/ wash hand basin. Then have en-suite upstairs in the bedroom. It would be nice to have access through the kitchen via a door to the outside. Have some sort of patio/ deck to use for entertaining during the good weather, maybe with some pots of flowers/ herbs/veggies. Bring the outside into use and give you the option of dinning outside. Good idea to have another window by the entrance, adding light. The bench and hanging hooks works well for me. Think as it’s such a small area a tike painted pattern on the floor may well give the impression it’s “over crowded” plus of course it’s a high traffic area so not entirely such painting the floor would last that well, especially when you factor in needing to wash and keep clean that area. I could see a smaller tile working, but it will mean more work.❤

I went back to the beginning of your videos and respectfully offer a suggestion. Looking at the front of the cabin, there is a huge space on the left of the front door that, if renovated, could offer two stories for bathrooms. It would balance the look of the front of the cabin. This is practical because it would allow you to solve three issues, that of simplifying the building of a new addition, that of plumbing installation, and that of adding exhaust for unpleasant odors. It would be true to the original look of the building, which is so charming and represents the hopes and dreams of the original owners. Having the bathrooms one on top of the other, you can have them as big as you like, making room for either showers or tubs. All you would have to do is create a door from existing rooms into the new bathrooms. You could take back the inside space in the living room. Windows would be an issue, but you could have your architect build the addition of windows into your plans. The venting would be simplified, which is a big issue. You have such a pleasant voice. I wish you would do voiceovers. We are from the US, and that would help us to understand your Swedish heritage. Like in that first room you stripped down to the boards. What was the intended use for that room? That is just a suggestion of what I mean for voiceovers. I am 72 yo female, love videos like yours, but additional information from voiceovers would help me understand your plans, but also your heritage.

Love the bathroom under the stairs. Nothing worse than having people traipse thru your bedroom. To me it's my sanctuary and I don't want someone possibly nosing around in there. Too bad you can't have a bathroom upstairs and downstairs. Also the idea of an opening out the kitchen to a patio area is always welcoming and used. I'm personally not a fan of "modern" decor but I do love the idea of the living space being used just for hanging out with friends and family. So far I'm quite impressed with your ideas and designs.

Great ideas Marcus, if you can do some of the building yourself, an extension downstairs for the bathroom is a really great idea. I also like the idea of a 2nd toilet under the stairs pending plumbing is permitted. The Sweedish culture isn't afraid to use colour in decor, which I think stimulates energy & happiness. The kitchen shaker painted cupboards would be a lovely choice. Thanks for sharing. Your home is going to be amazing!🇦🇺

Marcus, the best solution for a bathroom is an extension on the side of the house opposite the entrance. The entrance to such an extension is probably best made from the kitchen next to the stove. The window in this wall will obviously be redundant. Firstly, it will not worsen, but even improve the appearance of the house, as it will give it more symmetry. But the bathroom as part of the living room - the worst option. A bathroom on the second floor is also not the best solution. It will require serious waterproofing of the room, which is difficult to do on the second floor. In the extreme case on the second floor you can make only a small toilet with a passage from the bedroom. In addition, a freestanding bathtub is a beautiful, but not the best solution. It is suitable only for rest and relaxation, but not for washing under the shower, which always causes splashes on the floor and walls and without a curtain in front and tile on the sides is not possible, and such washing is so necessary for dirty work on the site around the house. In addition, freestanding bathtub looks good only in rooms of 15-20 squares and more.

Don’t forget about plumbing issues. If you have an upstairs bathroom, the plumbing should tie into the toilet plumbing downstairs in a convenient way. This may affect bathroom and especially toilet placement over the two floors. 😊

I like the idea of the bathroom in the bedroom/toilet under the stairs best. I think the living room looks awkward with the edge cut off and the idea of someone doing their business next to people sitting on the sofa is awkward too tbh. Also a bathroom upstairs is nice, as you do not need to wander through the house in the middle of the night if you need the toilet. The extension idea looks a bit weird tbh. Maybe a bigger extension that could also hold a ’tvättstuga’ could be an option? Regarding the kitchen, from a purely practical point of view, it is never a good idea to put a long distance between the hub and the sink. You need water for cooking and carrying the boiling pots across the kitchen to the sink will become tedious pretty quickly. Just a thought. Maybe take a look at original old Swedish kitchens for inspiration? Lycka till 🤞🏻

Hei Marcus! I've enjoyed your videos on your house very much and I'm looking forward to your further projects. Our house here in Värmland got a bathroom build in in the 1970's. The solution then was mostly practical: a little lean-to of 20 m2 with in it a bathroom/toilet, a pump house/water heater and a small larder. The three rooms are connected by a small hall where boots and coats can dry, there's a door in to the kitchen and a door to the outside. From the outside door you come to a small terrace with a roof over it. The advantage may be that you don't have to start laying pipes and breaking away in existing structures. Good luck on your dream! Greetings Peter

I would build a small extension for the bathroom downstairs off the back of the house. It could be done so that it mirrors the porch in the front of the house and in this way it wouldn’t look odd. The entry to the bathroom could be from either the kitchen or the living room.

Definitely better under the stairs as then it’s using lost space and more private than in the lounge, and tongue and groove. Upstairs corner bathroom looks great. Love the kitchen ideas too. Best of luck 😊

I have not very well understood the floor plan but just thinking of the light exposition could help; it's nice to have light from the west in the livingroom; An extension back from the view to the road would respect the shape of the cabin; you could always put toilets for guests under the stairs and a shower room elsewhere (behind the kitchen or the livingroom?)... If the upstairs allows it, don't hesitate to offer an onsuite for yourself, it's very useful and a bit luxury! The L shape is a good idea for the kitchen and to not have a too massive impression you can make a part of the L less deep (if it means something!); than, with so much low cabinets you would not need a pantry! By the way, I like the style and the colors you choose!

I like the idea of a bathroom under the stairs. But about the kitchen; you need a fridge and a freezer. I may have missed something in your videos but I have not seen where to place those. And maybe you’ll need a washing machine somwhere in the house? I really like to see all the work you put into the house. It will be exciting to follow the progress! Good luck!

Friends of mine had bathroom under the stairs. It worked well, they could fit only a toilet and sink but it worked well since then the full one upstairs was just theirs. Really depends on how much room you have. Only problem I have is if it were mine, it would be a storage room since I'm claustrophobic! I did use theirs and for that short time it was fine and handy. A great trick is using tape or cardboard to the exact measurements of the floor areas for layout. It really does work well esp in empty rooms. You find out quick how much your imagination was out!! Works for any room as well. I have to SEE it even if it is jut tape or cardboard cuttings. You can do it for height as well. Very useful. Good luck!! I'll be watching if your posting!

Great to see your ideas and plans, the bathroom is definitely not easy to figure out without knowing just how much space you have. I like the guest toilet under the stairs idea, it makes use of that space really well if it's big enough. Having the other one off your bedroom should work well, I've seen bathrooms as narrow as a shower work as well. 👍

I think the downstairs extension looks quite good...if you dont like it from the road you could plant a tree in that corner outside the bathroom window. The toilet under the stairs is good idea. A extension on both stories would be a very big job. Id paint the rises of the stairs...not the steps...they would scuff too much. What did they do for a bathroom in the old days.

So great to have you back , I like your ideas if it was me I’d put a main bathroom upstairs but build a bigger extension out the back and have a toilet on its own under the stairs for guess to use , I wouldn’t cut the living room sitting room up with it inside that space , most of your time is spend down stairs cooking reading chilling upstairs is for sleeping put the bathroom up there out the way x

Having the heat restroom off of the living room would make you quest feel uncomfortable using it. I have found this to be the case with everyone I have ever known. They want the room to be located, where there is sound and smell privacy.

In the hallway I would consider a higher up horizontal rather than vertical window so your in reach wall space can be saved and used. You could still have one that opens, it would give light but you may not see out of it. It would be for light and air only, well, you could see the sky but not the land.

I think you should put the Stonewall at the entrance as well because then it ties in the stonewall at the back to the front so it ties the whole property in together

L shape counter where the table is ( put table free standing in middle) and have an opening under the window so a stool could go there - another nice spot to sit/work but it has a continuous counter top. the opposite wall could then remain blank

also the bathroom extension does not look bad at all and with plants/trees you could easily make it attractive - or put it under the stairs - having a downstairs toilet really makes sense for so many reasons.

I wouldn't put a door outside from the kitchen unless you have to for fire code. You lose that wall completely and your kitchen isn't big enough. Pass through windows work if you want a patio out there. Wall space is precious in a smaller house.

Love your ideas. I think the first option for the bathroom looks best. But also under the stairs option is nice. Maybe a corner sink or a small above the toilet sink. And a complete extension would be preferred option. I agree it will look the most close to untouched as possible. Love your color options too.

Could an outer bathhouse/sauna in combination with a "downstairs loo" be a viable solution; perhaps in one of the already existing buildings? I have lived in some old houses with very peculiar bathroom choices and by far my favorite was the one with the "spa" across the yard...

I lied, THIS is my last comment, actually question....do you have to have 2 exits?? Here in Canada you do but I don't remember seeing a door to go out the back. Ours have to be spaced apart so less chance you'd get trapped in a fire. Regulations I believe are different for a non permanent residence but still in place if it's a holiday rental where it could be occupied year round. I wouldn't call your place a cabin to our standards, that's a house. Cabins usually aren't made very well and aren't necessarily 4 season equipped.

Here's two cents - Definitely bathroom under the stairs and an ensuite in your bedroom. Love the idea of a door to deck/veranda/covered porch off the kitchen where you mentioned putting a window. Also, L shape is always good, however, I notice you like to sit at the table to eat or drink coffee and look outside. Putting the table in center might be a bother moving around in the kitchen and you lose a nice view to relax the mind. Will be exciting to see how it turns out. Thank you for starting your channel and sharing!

I don’t know, but does your local government office have building/renovation regulations (sometimes called “codes”) that you need to abide by? I am asking because I have seen a lot of KZfaqrs start to build onto their properties or change them in some way, only to be told that it is against local planning regulations to do so (for instance, by breaking local codes regarding safety and fire prevention). Even adding a window is sometimes prohibited. So they have to undo a lot of their work. Just asking. Hopefully it is not applicable to you.
