Nuclear diamond batteries are made from nanodiamonds, tiny crystals that are created from nuclear waste. Nuclear waste is a huge problem: it's radioactive, dangerous and takes thousands of years to decay. But what if we could turn it into something useful? That's what the inventors of the nanodiamond battery have done. They have found a way to use the energy released by the nuclear waste to power the nanodiamonds, which then generate electricity. The result is a battery that can last for 28,000 years, without needing to be recharged or replaced.

Their theory is entirely sound and uses physics understood since the beginning of the 1900s, but with a more modern method of harvesting the radioactivity into electric charge. I heard about this a few years ago. Glad to see Elon is following it too. Maybe he can partner with them and help them to accelerate the process of development. It is a sound idea. Its only a matter of engineering and whether they are able to get the efficiency of the system up to the level required. Getting the supercapacitors up to a high capacity will make a giant difference too. EV cars have times where they are just sitting which will allow the radioactivity to recharge the system if it isn't under load.

This video is made by 5 years old kid probably. "We will use nuclear waste for power" is like "we will use trash for manufacturing". There are tens if not hundreds of isotopes in nuclear waste material, which are you going to use? How do you want to reprocess nuclear waste to separate needed material from it? What is energy density you expect? Claims about high power usage is a joke for anyone who attend school physics. We use RTG for many decades and they work only in low power applications. Whole video is collection of BS without any clue how stuff works in reality. Your diamond crystal are going to catch neutron radiation? Gamma radiation?

I just heard today that a Chinese lab has turned this idea into reality! A nano diamond radioactive battery that works for 50 years without charging. The future is here! I wonder how expensive are these new batteries. Radioactive batteries are not anything new, and they costed quite a lot but I hope this new thing is more affordable.
@lauwenmark
@lauwenmark 5 ай бұрын
That's not exactly new technology, or any sort of revolutionary breakthrough. The reason why it is not really useful except for niche applications is that it generates a very low current (but for a very long duration). The energy produced per unit of time would be in the order of 1000 times less than a typical AAA cell - the advantage being that it could run for 50 years. So yes, that's a nice device and yes it works. But no, it cannot be used to create a AAA-battery replacement or be used to power a smartphone for years.
@rahman405g
@rahman405g 5 ай бұрын
@@lauwenmark it is all over news. it seems they have managed to make a working battery that can be used in even mobile phones. but who knows! let’s see what happens. i am looking forward to that. The Beijing-based company claims that it is the first to successfully miniaturize atomic energy, fitting 63 nuclear isotopes into a battery smaller than a coin. This breakthrough puts it “way ahead” of all other European and American academic and commercial institutions. The phrase “atomic battery” doesn’t sound safe, but Betavolt claims that its BV100 battery is perfectly safe for consumers, as it won’t leak radiation even if its protective cover is punctured. The company plans to begin mass-producing the battery later this year, and introduce a more powerful version in 2025. In the future, Betavolt plans to target the aerospace industry, medical equipment, AI devices, small drones, robotics, and virtually any industry that needs batteries with a lifespan of 50 years. The BV100 is considered a breakthrough on many levels, but as several tech news outlets point out, the power output of 100 microwatts at 3 volts isn’t particularly impressive. Betavoolt plans to launch a new 1-watt atomic battery in 2025, and as technology improves, we may soon see smartphone batteries that require no recharging.

Currently an EV battery is a pack of THOUSANDS of essentially AA rechargeable batteries. So how is that any different that putting thousands of AA sized Diamond batteries into a pack. As for cost, low level radioactive carbon moderators are used all over the world. Each battery cell only needs a tiny sliver of a typical moderator from a nuclear power plant. Companies pay to remove and store this radioactive waste.

The idea is ancient nuclear power produces energy for thousands of years that is the problem with radiation it is simply a matter of converting the radiation to the right type of electricity the problem is how do you make it safe to hold the battery in your hand and not get the radiation on you and the key to that is some type of insulation whether or not they can deliver the battery in one year or 5 years doesn't really matter the fact that they are trying to figure it out is worthwhile

The most recent one produces 1.9 V and they are making one capable of producing 2 V. It is a tiny SLIVER of carbon moderator from a nuclear power plant encased in 2 layers of DIAMOND, the hardest substance. Industrial diamonds are not rare or very expensive. I cannot believe it would be more dangerous than a Lithium Ion battery in a collision. Those things catch fire if punctured and are almost impossible to keep extinguished. Its like lighting a solid rocket motor, with fuel and oxidizer in the same package together.

We could even use alpha particles or gamma radiation with diamond batteries. Along with nano techniques and technology. Strontium,Thorium, Radium, Nickel 63, many other isotopes could be used. They are using very safe ones at the time. It's really the only solution to chemical batteries that need recharged dont last and have a short-range. If a car crash can wreck a diamond we are in trouble. We could double protect the batteries. Now with AI tech we can find a solution very quickly. I imagine we will see this technology by 2030. Maybe even a giant power plant.

The sun is going spread more radiation than small scale batteries. And this would be safer than just leaving the spent radioactive waste to decay over the years. And the contents are not reactive to our own atmosphere like Lithium is.
