this is the type of obsessing over minutia that i love. thank you for sharing!

More experimental than obsessive I think. But then, I guess the differences in the op amp in my DOD250 vids might be splitting hairs. Sometimes I like to see if I can get a bit more, but then I'll draw a line at some point and settle for good enough.

Replace the fuzz pot with a fixed resistor, and wire up a 47k linear pot as a series variable resistor from the input jack, so max on pot is 0 ohm, min is 47k. The input volume adjusts the gain like the guitar volume pot, but keeps more highs as you turn it down. I did this to my builds and its miles more useful than the fuzz control for adjusting gain. All the way down is same volume as bypassed on mine. But I also done away with the fuzz volume pot and replaced it with an 18k resistor. Like the old Vox distortion booster with 0.1uF input and output caps.

Oh yeah eh, that does make sense, since you pretty much crank the fuzz knob, but adjust the "gain" with your guitar volume pot. Also yeah, putting it in series, instead of the usual divider to ground would prevent highs from bleeding off.

Pretty good trick for socketing there bud! Question, if you're running a single coil p90 (I noticed you called out the humbucker) with no volume/tone controls, do you still need a resistor to maintain proper output impedance or can you wire it straight to the output jack? FWIW, the straight to jack method is what I'm doing and it seems to sound just fine but I don't wanna be leaving any tone on the table there bud.

Well it's hit or miss. I've played a lot with pickups, but not so much P90s. My Dimarzios were more forgiving, but I did notice a difference with Seymours. I think, if you're good at soldering, it's worth a try. It won't hurt at all. Questions is, do P90's use 500k pots ? I notice some guitars and pickups sometimes use 250k pots. Kind of need to figure out the value of the stock pot that's intended to match and get the closest resistor. 470k for Humbuckers, 220k if you're suppost to use 250k pots. I do it with EMG's too. 22k resistor for them. Just solder it nice, don't just tack it on. My philosophy, is I connect the component in such a way it'd have a good connection if there was no solder.

if you want led to not drain your battery you can always switch to 3 row foot switch and add 3v coin cell just to power the led on a separate circuit
@DATT

Ah, I don't really see an advantage to that. You'd just burn thru coin cells. Might as well consolidate to one power source. Just they won't run as long. I don't' sweat it using rechargeables.

@@DATT you can always pick super bright led and drive it out of specs low current so it barely sip power , like below 1ma when it is spec for 10-20ma as a bonus it might stop glowing when you get below certain voltage all together becoming sort of low voltage indicator for sure proof indicator you would just paralell it with a zener and add up zener voltage to led forvard voltage plus resistor and your led woul cut off when battery would get to a certain level of discharge there is many ways to skin the cat but you do you, just think of transistor headroom when biasing them harder so you won't hit the limits in unexpected point

@@kokodin5895 Oh yeah, I had thought about that after the fact a bit. I'm used to working with typical 5mm LED's that need like 5ma minimum to run at dece brightness. But I did notice when I got some 2mm LED's they were much brighter with less mA. I guess that's what BOSS does in their pedals. I do notice those LED go out near when the battery gets close to flat. That voltage indication trick by running them on edge, I hadn't thought of that. Using a zener as a votlage detector? I think I've tried something like that before. I find they tend to be too gradual for accurate results. I used them in a circuit once that had to detect between 9v and 12v outputs, for large jumps they can work well. Never tried doing it like that with an LED tho. Tbh, I'm having a hard time visualizing how that would work. Sounds like you might know a thing or two about electronics.

@@DATT if you put zener at it reverse polarity between one power rail and a led you have always constant voltage drop across the zener, and led also have somehow constatt forward voltage let say you pick 4,5v zener, and white or blue led around 3,5-3,7v with 200 ohm resistor to set the current to 1-5ma when the input voltage is above 4,5v+3,5v zener conducts and cap at it's rated voltage, that being that 4,5v and it is like driving led from remaining 4,5v between zener other leg and the other power line but then led would stop glowing completly when the batery gows below 8v because both zener and led would stop conducting due to too small voltage acros them more sophisticated way of doing things would be to use zener and transistor as a constant voltage source and drive led from that, a bit more complex but much less gradual effect you then need just a transistor and one more resistor

@@kokodin5895 I think I get it, zeners are pretty simple. Still having difficulty visualizing. So the zener is in series with the LED ?, And in series with the resistor too, it's all one string ? My first instinct is that would defeat the purpose, as the zener would consume current also, but maybe not so much in series.
