"The googles....and the....twitters!" That really got me haha... great video, very informative and concise. I do have a question, though. I've recently encountered the dreaded (Computer is too slow to play... ) error message, and I realize that I may be using a bit more processing power than necessary when adding plugins to my tracks. I recently noticed that there are parametric and fixed EQ enables on each of the tracks, as well as right there underneath the MAIN volume fader on the mixer. When these are activated, I presume they use up more processing power than if they were disabled, but I'm wondering by how much if at all. I've always used the mastering suite FX / utilities in individual tracks FX inserts (unless there was a way I could bus the tracks to one device). Now that I see that these exist (I'm blind lol), I feel like I could negate the use of the EQs in the mastering suite (or Synapse EQ which I purchased recently) and possibly save processing power and memory. Would using these EQ's be the less CPU / RAM intensive option? Sorry for the long-winded question, but I'm trying to save money on buying better computer components, by being more efficient in my recording / mixing process. Thank you again for the videos, I can't wait to watch the rest! EDIT: I meant the Parametric EQ enables, but I guess we could throw in the fixed EQ's as well!

The things that use up most of the CPU are going to be the midi instruments, once you have their parts written convert them to audio and disable the midi track, you can always go back to it if you need to edit and just render to audio again. When mixing the VSSL is really all you need and it does not use a lot of cpu. Also I suggest you watch the Learn How To Mix tutorial series it has helped thousands of people rethink how to mix.

So I'm new to Reason and have been told I should use send effects when dealing with effects such as delay and reverb opposed to inserting the effect. I've watching a couple different videos so far, my question is what's the difference in using the ssl mixer vs. 14:2? Are there any pros or cons? Thanks
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 10 жыл бұрын
There is a huge difference between using the 14:2 vs the SSL to mix in. I only use the 14:2 / 6:2 in a Combinator to create instruments other then that there is really no use for it any more now that we have the SSL mixer. The pros for the SSL are too vast to write down, just watch the SSL video series and they will show you.

HI, really great tutorial, thank you. So is the difference of using fx send and return opposed to just directly adding an effect to an audio lane in the rack the greater variability (like eg panning the effect to a different side than the main signal)? Or did i get that wrong?
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 4 жыл бұрын
The Send simply gives you the ability to add the same effect at the amount you want to any track. Don't over think it.

thanks Matt, your Video really enlightened me (again). :) But when I used your "Gain staging"-Method in a song I had a problem. I usually turn the volume up to 0 db in Reason´s channel mixer. Now I turned it down via the "Gain"-Knob to -10 and now it misses some dynamics. The synth-pad for example seems to sound really flat now. I hope you understand my problem.
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 10 жыл бұрын
You most likely added your compression before setting your static mix. You should record your audio/midi and the first thing you do after is set it to your Gain Structure and then add and effects. As you add effects you then watch your input gain and then you can make small adjustments to maintain it without effecting you sound.

Is there a way to give a good tip for automate audio FX i.e. delay feedback, filtering etc etc. I see it's easy with midi tracks, but let's say i want to apply a delay on the last note of a vocal audio track automating it (?) Also, would it be more helpful to create bus & aux fx for more control? Any tutorial that can show how this is done ? Thank U!
@LearnReason

All you have to do is right click the control you want to automate and select [edit automation] Now click record and move that control and the automation will be created. You then can goto the automation lane that you just created and edit it.

LearnReason Sure is good, I am just wondering; there are 8 sends only, whether in LogicX each singular channel can have its own pre/post/post pan. I guess each DAW has its own great feat.s I will scratch the surface deeper (Reason 9.1) and hopefully I will gain the speed of building a rack/remix/song fast enough. I wish that Propellerhead would have a better tools box for a quick access and flexibility...Perhaps they will fix this and few little thing that, to me, are very important to have in a DAW as u tend to speed up the editing part. Thanks for reply... Will follow yr tutorials and your community. Alexia.

Each channel in Reason can have what you want and much more. If you want FX pan separate for each channel you can do this very easily. Reason has more flexibility than any DAW out there for sure. The key is to take a "little" time to learn it.

Stumped: When I try to isolate the FX Send and the FX Ret in the Fader Control Room, nothing happens. I've made sure that that the little blue light is lit next to the appropriate channel, that I've selected the instrument in the sequencer, and still nothing changes. Reverb is definitely on the sound, but clicking FX Send doesn't isolate the dry sound, and FX Ret doesn't isolate the reverb. Any ideas?

Ok if you have send 1 on a channel and you then select the Return 1 in the Control Room you should only hear the wet signal. Make sure you have the effect hooked up correct in the master section and other then that maybe its time to update? Sorry thats all I can think of. It works great in Reason 11 and 12 and I have never had it not work since Record when it first came out. Might have to call support.

Go to the FX return section on the SSL mixer, right click on the empty box above the "EDIT" button, and then select "create send effect" from the drop down menu that appears. The FX and instruments window (F3) will open if it's not already open. Double click on the RV7000 icon. The reverb will be automatically routed for you.
