Yes, I should've done Eterna vs S-cinetone. Fuji noob who rented a camera for a day. Both are great cameras. In fact, any camera in this price point is already great.

Greetings, sorry to hear about the SSD failure. I love your videos and have been a long time Sony boy myself. I'm currently shooting on FX3/30 and Canon R5/R5C. I test other cameras from time to time. I haven't tried the new Fuji H2S though. I was disappointed with the FX30, it's hardly a step up from the A6300/6500. The bad codecs have been limiting me for a very long time with Sony and I want to sell all the glass and go to another system. Would love to see another H2S test. And a test of important parameters like dynamic range vs FX30, a detailed comparison of noise in LOG and blockiness of built-in codecs. In personal email I will be happy to share my opinion and developments on FX3/FX30 codecs.

Did you make a mistake on the lowlight comparison? Second base iso on Sony fx 30 is 2500, if I am not wrong. You’re comparing 800 vs. 1250 (I know, Fuji has 1250 as first base iso). And generally speaking, on dual native iso sensors, the second base / native iso is cleaner than the first one. Can you please check and confirm if you made a mistake? Or were just talking over the 800 vs 1250 part about the second base. Cause this is confusing now.

@@WEHAVETHISDREAM no mistake on the lowlight part. Both were shot on 800 vs 1250 and then 2500 vs 2500. Fx30 generally is a noisy camera if you don’t put enough light in.

definitely consider comparing S Cinetone to the Eternal profile in the X-H2s. I think it will capture more dynamic range. Colours are flatter and there is definitely less contrast so it can be graded,

I picked the XH2s for my commercial work for the Prores/Raw/dynamic range/colours. I’ve used it on a national TV commercial airing during MLB broadcasts, a wedding and several educational video projects and it has been an absolute monster. I’ve used the Fuji system for years, and have experience with Blackmagic and Sony as well. Previous to the XH2s, the Blackmagic was my A Cam, but at this point I’ve retired it. I surprisingly preferred the actual image from the XH2s, and then couple that with wicked autofocus vs manual focus, longer battery, and not having to kit it out, and the XH2s has become my A Cam. Absolute game-changer for me. There’s also a punchiness to the sensor I don’t see many people talk about. It isn’t in the older Fuji bodies to the same degree, nor was it in the Blackmagic or Sony I was using, but it has really elevated the end result. I haven’t used the FX30 specifically but I’m sure that’s a beast as well.

I think XH2S really has a great potential for a lot of things. It has a more flexible footage that the FX30 can have. Trying to maybe get it out for a shoot see how it performs! I'm sure it'll be amazing.

I think Fuji cameras are technically extremely good but Sony has better lenses that are also more expensive. The Sony 24mm f1.4 may be their best and it's being compared to Fuji 24mm f1.4 which is half the price and cannot match the image quality of the Sony lens. Which lens are you using for. commercial work with the Fuji?

@@dwaynepiper3261what lenses specifically are you comparing? I know the most expensive Sony lenses are the G variants for Full Frame, while Fuji only has APSC lenses and their top line is the XF. I assume the sensor used might make a difference as well. I am no expert but I am interested in understanding how one lens is better than the other.

I noticed a certain ‘punchiness’ in the video files as well. The X-H2S has a remarkable color depth (in F-log2 but also Eterna). The hues really ‘pop’ and gradations between light and dark are smooth. This is a camera that makes even ordinary shots look special. I even enjoy just pointing the camera at a random scene to see what the colors are doing, it is that good!

I have a few film sims I use for my photography but I've found the eternal and portra recipes I use tend to perform amazing for video depending on the general temp outside, providing super cinematic colours straight out of the box with little to no grading needed

3:40 That would be the Eterna film simulation. Low contrast and low saturation (you can add both if you prefer) and has the best dynamic range straight out of the camera.

Few months ago I've asked u bout fuji when was choosing my first camera (my choice was a bit more budget between sony zve10 and fuji xs10). Went for fuji due to its design and film simulations - and haven't regret! Really like it, it lacks 10bit footage (can on hdmi recorder, but it's expensive..) but in other matters it's almost perfect. Actually I haven't learnt to colourgrade yet and may be even in 8bit will manage to at least learn something. Moreover its simulations saved me from grading untill now, so more than happy! My first experience in making both videos and photos on a camera and I'm still learning but it seems enthusiasm in the end is more important than the camera, so I'm sure it's more about your aestethic and preferences and most of modern cameras are suitable for all at least hobby wishes. Thank for your channel!

Give Nostalgia Neg a try too, on the xh2s. It’s my new favorite film sim exclusive to the new bodies. Beautiful smooth and warm highlights, rich colors without feeling too saturated, solid contrast, and very pleasing skin tones across the white balance range. I like classic chrome but it’s not always great for people/skin tones depending on the white balance. Unless you’re going for a visual “vibe”. Great for city stuff and street photography though, where the focus isn’t specifically around people as much as it is around the location the people are in.

@@VictorLaforteza CC is definitely most used for just a good straight outta camera look and particularly for photos which is what most recipes are made for. Eterna is more comparable to s-cinetone tho. A little more apples to apples

06:10 - this is where I differ from many people who have spoken about this. I think personally, it's great that Fuji gives the options and when you know the differences between All-I, Long GOP and ProRes, the complexity is quite manageable. Great comparison though!

Fun fact, you can adapt literally any lens to any mirrorless camera. Also lend variety is nice but more doesn't necessarily mean better.

@@ish_vidsthat about "literally any lens" seems like an inaccurate statement. As far as I know there is no adapter that can allow you to use E mount lenses into FX bodies, for example. In this case, what yoy should consider more is buying cinema lenses, which cheaper options are appearing more that have versions for all popular mounts. I agree that more options does not equal better.

More rigorous testing of the xh2s from cine d gave the Fuji camera 9 stops of latitude. That's pretty amazing. I don't think you're going to find that on the fx-30. Gerard undone found the hx2s had more stops of dynamic range than the fx-3, the big brother of fx-30. So I'm guessing the fx-3 has less dynamic range than the xh2s.

How does the video stabilisation compare with wide lenses? - especially the IBIS wobble in handheld video with wide lenses, the corner wobble isn't great on the Fuji on say a 13mm Viltrox. How do they compare for walking videos (non static)?

@3:12 DR 100-400 only affects the highlights brother. It is an algorithm-based feature that underexposes highlights relative to whichever DR setting you chose

Awesome comparison! Both have strengths and weakness, but I'm a little bias towards FUJIFILM (X-H1 owner). But as an owner of both Sony a7s (previously; a57, a77) & FUJIFILM XH1, I can agree with your comments on noise grain, color difference with magenta vs FUJI's green (love it!) ... just one thing, about the Classic Chrome did you raised the shadows in the video settings. I made a video on how to get amazing SOOC colors using the Classic Chrome Film Simulation (X-H1). And I have found to have increased the shadow range over the default settings of CC. Thanks again for sharing your results. Cheers

Another big factor the fuji has over that Sony is there is not crop when filming raw externally. So fuji gives you the choice of Blackmagic raw or prores raw + 6.2k open gate while the Sony has this huge crop in on the sensor then reduces the quality a lot and only has prores raw. Not to mention its a great stills camera.

你好Victor, Chinese viewer here. Got a big question, I'm thinking the FX30 for travel vlogging (using iphone rightnow), kind of want to try out that cinematic look. Thing is, I have never shot a Slog profiles + the ND filter exposure makes me want to quit, too much work for traveling and videoing, not the workflow im intended. So how about I shoot on S-Cinetone, auto ISO and no ND filter to worrie about, drop a LUT and boom, start editing. I did thought about SONY ZV-E10, but FX30 with 4K60 seems like a great choice.

You'll definitely get by with S-Cinetone pretty good! It's really for those fast editing workflow without worrying too much about post color. FX30 is great because of the 10bit and you'd get a lot more value out of it than the recycled sensor of the ZV-E10 (same as the a6400). Set the shutter to 1/50, auto ISO (min 125 - max 2500), auto aperture can work too! then you'd be good for your travel setup.

I’m just thinking. I have a FX3 as my main cam. So second cam I am tempted for x2hs because of open gate, view finder, photography. FX30 seems the most obvious choice but the thrill is missing 😔

It sounds like for your use case, yes, the obvious choice should definitely be the FX30... easily match your footage... workflow and setup pretty much the same... same lens mount. I can understand how the X-H2s is tempting, especially as a hybrid camera... I own both the X-H2s and X-H2... but 2 different camera ecosystems may be adding too much complexity to your workflow.

BTW first time was when I switched from blackmagic to sony. Though still get teary/nostalgic at times, the convenience god is always smiling ☺

I’ll be the devil on your shoulder - I’m a Fuji guy, but found a sick deal at auction for an fx3 so now I’ll be using fx3 + xh2 for my wedding and commercial work. :) If you need photo work, the xh2 is a great hybrid that does wonderful video and cheaper than the xh2s

my main issue with what you said is regarding the Yc I would hate for Fujifilm to limit the Kodak on these cameras. It’s one of my favorite things about these cameras. There are so many options that they give. As a professional, I like shooting in the highest quality.

Hey there. Nice comparison...I got the FX30 and I like it a lot...is it true that the 1080p out of the FX30 (in S cinetone) is "trash" as some reviewers say? The 4K is very good (I use a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 mostly) but I don't think the 1080p is bad...what could they be comparing it to? In your video I can see that the fuji's 1080p looks a bit better-less noise and more detailed but with some lumetri adjustments I'm sure the 1080p footage from the Sony would be very usable. thanks for your opinion.

Don’t hope without testing. The full hd on Sony is line skipped, pixel bended trash. Fujifilm not. I have Sony and Fujifilm. No lumetry or super scale plugins can save the Sony…

Watching this in 2024. Try the eterna film sim for a more flatter/malleable look. Classic chrome really has deep shadows :)

You did the Cinetone vs Classic chrome. Is Cinetone supposed to be the flatter picture profile? If so, you should have chosen Eterna for fuji to compare.

Nice video dude! The XH2S is a dope little camera for sure! Completely agree with the bitrate criticism, it's far too much choice, especially as the bitrate selection is consistent across 6K, 4k60, and even 1080. Coming from Sony, it was a bit of a learning curve getting used to Fuji's quirks & colour management, but feels like it was worth it now I'm comfortable. Eterna is the more 'video oriented' film simulation, so that's probably closer to S-Cinetone, but it's still a little to punchy without adjusting the profile in-camera, so I'd 100% start there! Happy shooting!

... not sure if I'm not in agreement with the same thing, but I completely disagree with wanting less codecs. The inclusion of the internal Prores codecs on the X-H2s was one of the main reasons for going with this camera! ... especially easy to edit in my NLE of choice and on my several years old hardware.

@@GrayGhostDog1 The multiple codecs is a 100% good thing, the multitude of bitrates is a little much. ProRes is incredible & one of the biggest selling points of this camera. But being able to shoot H265 at 50, 100, 200, 360, 720 mbps in 6k is an odd choice, would be sweet if Fujifilm has tested the various bitrates and provided some kind of guidance as to at which resolutions / framerates the different options start to struggle so we didn’t have to test ourselves

Yeah, I'm such a fuji noob I forgot Eterna existed... lol. I'm hoping to get it head to head with s-cinetone again at some point. Overall, based on my initial testing, I'm still very impressed. Especially with open gate! Overall both good cameras and we can easily pick what best suits our jobs.

Multiple codecs are good but the multiple bitrates are a bit too much. I totally understand with older machines that prores or editing friendly codecs are good to have I just wish there's more streamlined options. 720mbps, 300/200mpbs and 100 or lower mbps. That should cover most applications since you can easily choose your flavours and 720 mbps might not be too much of an upgrade from 300mbps to others.

Your description of stabilization on the FX30 is incorrect. Standard is IBIS, active is electronic stablization in addition to IBIS. Both work on lenses with no OSS.

@Victor Laforteza Yes. Standard applies to cameras in general, but also includes IBIS, if the camera has that. It covers all physical stabilization methods. Active stablization is not physical, what happens is the camera uses a crop and adjusts which pixels are used to compensate for movement. Let me repeat to be clear: standard stablization uses physical methods and active stablization adds electronic methods. The FX30 uses IBIS, which is a physical stabilization method. You can see the image jumping when you pan hand held with standard stablization on as the sensor tries to compensate for the movement. To smooth that out you need to use active stablization as well. If you go into stills mode the camera will actually tell you that standard stablization is not available on the FX30 if your lens has a OSS switch. The option is greyed out. It is only available in video since it uses both the IBIS and lens stablization.

Honestly any non log recording format is going to limit you in post- so all those film simulations IMHO are for casual users- no pro is going to take a chance on them... (And I do love love love my FX30!! But never gonna use anything but S-Log3...)

Eterna film simulation is liked by Jordan Drake SOOC for Fujifilm. Also the XH2S is nice with fast moving objects so you don’t get the jelly stuff.

Eterna is my go to film sim for video with my X-T3 and x-t30. It's super easy to flatten the image a little more without using a log profile

Yes agreed but I only had one day with it and had no idea what everything is during that time. I wish it was a free loaner unit but I rented it with my own money.

Fujifilm's Dynamic Range modes are not for shadows. It is for highlight protection.

@@VictorLaforteza You'll have to use the tone curves. There's settings to adjust highlights and shadows. I'm assuming the DR400 works the same in video as in photo. In stills, the image is exposed at ISO 160 and the shadows are boosted by 2 stops to ISO 640 and combined.

@@VictorLaforteza drop the tone to -2 shadows and -2 highlights for the most (perceived) DR. Add in a s curve in post. Even though that’s not the best for a quick turn around work flow. Check out John Stambaugh on here. He has a video dedicated to a classic chrome workflow!

I would go with Fujifilm Xh2s! i currently own an XT4 so it fits perfectly. If i would go with Sony, i'd rather go for FX3.

Thats not true about the stabilization inside the Sony FX30. The IBIS inside the FX30 is just always on in both settings unless turned to "off". When you are on standard mode, it will *also* use the "OSS" inside a lens, but "ACTIVE" stabilization uses the gyro data almost in real time to stabilize it digitally...hence the crop. Its like using Cataylst browse, without actually using it. Its already done for you. Almost all my lenses minus 1 do not have OSS and im always shooting in "standard" and IBIS is infact working. If I take that same lens and put it on my a6400 which is rigged out decently heavy, it looks like an earthquake...its also in the help guide with the FX30

True, I should've corrected it but in all the years I've been shooting Sony, normal mode and off are almost the same thing. You barely see any difference. Might as well count it as off. If you pair with an OSS lens, that's the only time I see a decent stabilization on normal. That's just my experience.

@@VictorLaforteza its typically on APSC censors and I think just sony in general - that their IBIS isnt as good (as you demonstrated actually) so some people "rarely" dont notice a difference with ibis on or off. But per the Help Guide on the FX30 "OFF" means no stabilization at all. IBIS is OFF and so is OSS (if your lens has OSS), "STANDARD" turns on IBIS and OSS, and "ACTIVE" does real time GYRO compensation. Me personally, I shoot standard all day even without OSS lenses (only own one lens with OSS) - especially if you build yout your FX30 (like you have, mines built out almost exactly like yours, but mine uses the XLR handle and I used a Ninja V for ProRes and ProRes RAW) the weight of the camera really makes it less shakey and ACTIVE almost looks trip-pod like

Well, I feel like "stuck" on Sony. Four sony cameras, ten lenses, adapters, batteries and a bunch of other accessories make it too hard to go in another direction right now. But it's been a while now since I am more and more tempted to save some money, sell almost all my Sony gear and go for Fujifilm. This feeling has increased so much since they released the XH2S because it feels like the perfect hybrid camera for me. I love the APSC ecosystem, I love the feeling of using Fuji cameras, the colors, the lenses...

I'm definitely in the same boat! Feels like Sony put it that way so long term, it's harder to switch to other brands. I might slowly migrate but all my lenses are e-mount... might just get PL mounts from now on!

@@VictorLaforteza well, according to SAR there're a lot of new Sony cameras to come this year. Maybe an APSC pro camera with 10bit 6K, open gate and a hybrid spirit 🙃 Is it too much to expect? 🤣 For me I think I will end up getting a used XE4 to calm my GAS for a while ✌🏻

Me too! Sad to see Sony keeps churning out FF and APS-C vlog cams. No update for A6X00 for 4 years... Still holding my NEX-6, awaiting the update from Sony. Or switch to Fuji. APS-C should be the answer to most people's demand. FF is lucrative for Sony to upsell everyone to get it. Smart people go APS-C.

its all about glass for me personally. So that why I'am sticking with Sony, yes you can probably adapt about anything these days but I think Sony is still ahead when it comes to glass. Sony should to better with updates but I think even people at Sony agree on that.

@@VictorLaforteza yeah, strange Sony policy. I have a7siii and I’m not getting similar features that fx30 has. That’s sucks. I’m not telling that all features have to be added. Simple features like focus breathing compression or similar should be added. It’s just software features and a7siii already has all necessary hardware. What is a problem Sony? I have paid almost 3k $ for body and tone of bucks for lenses. That’s shame Sony 👎

It is not that simple, firmware updates are designed for a system, not a particular function. Changing something or adding a new function can have all sorts of implications for other functions within the system. Pretty much all manufacturers don't update functionality for this reason, or very rarely anyway, unless something is actually not working correctly. There is too much risk in unintentionally borking the camera.

I don't think Sony has to worry about Fuji at all. So far, I've seen EF lenses paired well with Sony through adapters. But, I don't see a reason to use Fuji lenses with my Sony FX30. And I wouldn't get into Fuji just because of low light performance. Fuji's color science has never been attractive to me as it always seems to shift to the cooler side, much like their stills film stock. People make WAY too big a deal about noise. Whether in low light or daylight situations. There are noise reduction tools, such as what DaVinci Resolve Studio has, that make it extremely easy to reduce noise in post in a matter of seconds. Some people are just too lazy to do any amount of post work, but, they want the camera to do everything and wash their dishes. So, I don't take the complaints about noise seriously. Because with today's tools, and a few minutes of your time, you can tackle most situations. Oh, and use lighting.

Sony definitely wins in the lens selection category. It's super accessible to anyone with any budget! I just think that competitors are now catching up so maybe it's time for Sony to pull out their tech sorcery and come out with a feature or camera that would disrupt the market again! Definitely an exciting time for any brand right now tbh.

I am Not Sony guy neither fanboy, never like their Color Science even they have improved Lately compare to the PAST. Their update firmware Sucks. They seem really Late or not coming. They like to release more cameras to $ell only and it's All they Care Damn it!! The only good thing about Sony cameras is their Autofocus Sytem which is Fast and Reliable and the Vast third party Lenses selections. Fujifilm JPEG straight camera is Excellent Good, it blows out my mind. Heck, I can ONLY shoot JPEGs no RAW If I want to... Awesome color skin tone is Beautiful not Magenta Weirdo ugly like Sony has. Sony image is Too clean too Sharp too Digital not Filmic look which sucks and I DON'T Want that Digital Artificial Commercial Clean Look in my photos/videos. Need to work Hard and Twist Really Hard any Sony images to turn to look like Film look. The noise comes out Fujifilm cameras looks so Pleasant and Beautiful to the eyes like Film grain which I love Filmic Look. I'm owning XT2 and love it and thinking to get XH2S.

Sony are less likely to suddenly decide to exit the camera business leaving users high and dry. I had that experience with Samsung, a month after I bought my NX1 they decided they were no longer making cameras and just stopped.

Why would Fuji go the Samsung route? I believe they are even less likely to abandon their camera business. Sony has been killing it in recent years but they also have tons of products like TVs, Phones, etc.
