I really liked Renegades. It made me a GI Joe fan, where I didn't care about it before. Would have liked it have gotten another season or two.

This had the best snake eyes retelling period that introduced it and improved it.

I loved this show as a kid, I watched it on the Hub. I was never a fan of G.I Joe, but Renegades caught my attention, I loved the artstyle and the plot and characters really grew on me. It's honestly such an underrated show that not many people know about.

This is definitely my favorite GI Joe series, and I had always taken the message to be that yes, there are good people in the military, but in order to do the right thing they have to go against the system and disregard orders. Flint's belief that if they're innocent, they ought to turn themselves in and go through proper channels is framed as being idealistic but incorrect and unrealistic for the situation. The military is portrayed as a more neutral entity that the protagonists have to operate outside of to be heroic

I don't often hear about this cartoon

I think Rise of Cobra really hurt the GI JOE brand. It left a bad taste in my mouth and just about killed my appetite for more GI JOE. When the show aired, I was not ready to give it a fair shot. Someone posted the series on youtube, and now I really wish I wasn't so turned off and closed-minded.

Animations is fine. The story is fine. Doesn't need to criticize the military to improve. Its simple and action based which is perfect for GI Joe. You seem to have a anti-military view in this video. You forgot that Duke disobeys orders to do the right thing. You took the moral big companies are bad. Yet didn't see the morality of doing the right thing no matter what in the show. Which is the main bases of the show. Sure it has pro-military stuff in it but it GI Joe a American Hero. Changing it would make it something different and not GI Joe. This really isn't new to GI Joe ether Duke has always disobey's orders to do the right thing. That was in the 80's cartoon.

Honestly one of my favorite cartoons. At this time when cartoons felt like only for kids (TFP, etc.) this show was quite watchable even today.

This guy is trying way too hard to see an anti- military/anti-capitalist message that isn’t there. Just because a corporation is framed as the villain, doesn’t make it anti-capitalist. You’re giving way too much credit to what is, at the end of the day, a children’s cartoon meant to sell toys. The fact that you criticized the G.I. Joe franchise for “licking the boots” of the U.S. military is also very telling, and it doesn’t surprise me that you’re trying so hard to see criticism that isn’t there.

I would actually contend that Renegades can be critical of the US Military. Take Major Flint, utterly trusting of his orders, not willing to be skeptical of major American corporations, and unwilling to listen to the people he interrogates.

I miss good gi joe series, transformers seems to get te a lot more attention and tend be more successful. Hell wouldn't mind if they did cartoon series combining the twilight. Seeing idw transformers include joe team and cobra in their universe along few other franchises. How cool be that autobots have human partners that are the joes.

Renegades and the new Skybound series address the implicit lack of organizational loyalty that the military has for its troops, regardless of their performance or qualifications, which are real-world problems our troops deal with daily. Internal corruption and outside influence have always been part of the comics dating back to the Marvel run.

I'd love a revival on Netflix. :)

i I really loved this show - I also became a GI Joe Fan because of it. A cool premise - I spotted and didn't mind the A-Team references - there is more than one way to tell a story. I liked the insidiousness of Cobra hiding behind a big coproation that provided almost every kind of product. I liked that Renegades focused on a small group of characters and their interactions. The animation style took getting used to, but in the end I found it unique, and kid of refreshing. And in a mild way, it did offer some criticism of the army - General Abernathy's blind trust in the Baroness and Cobra and Flint's unquestionning following of orders standing out.

I thought it was very critical of the military. Several characters enlisted because they didn't have many other options, and while there was some reminiscing, I definitely felt like there was a sense of betrayal in most of the main cast.

If you want to see the characters in a form that does point out prolbems with the military you can look at the old comics for some of that.

Great video Lavapasta as always !! I've never actually come across this show. Was just reliving the goodness of the classic 80s installments and then came across this. Looks like a very interesting show that definitely needs to be checked out. The character designs remind me a bit of spectacular spiderman !!

This show blew me away in ways that the GI Joe franchise hadn’t. Now I have one small complaint I have like Tunnel Rat being the medic of the team because if you ask me Doc should’ve have been apart of the Renegades but other than that this show is basically perfect

I stumbled across the first 26 episodes back to back in one massive 12 hour edit on the G.I. JOE - Official Channel. It's not something I'd usually watch. But I thought meh I'll give it a go, and I have to say it's not bad. If you liked the Young Justice series which released the same year (2010). You'll probably enjoy this too.

I've been recently studying the original G.I. Joe cartoon, and I think it's more of a clever sci-fi action melodrama than jingoistic propaganda. It also still stands out well for a show that was primarily intended to sell toys, which are still pretty good toys to this day. From watching the early episodes, the original G.I. Joe doesn't have the usual elements of jingoistic war films to count as propaganda, since it was mainly use to promote toys, but I can see how it could be interpreted so. If it had, it wouldn't show GI Joe trying to save the Soviet Union's army from Cobra during one of the early episodes. I saw Cobra more as a cleverly conceived supervillain agency that was nuttier than the Legion of Doom rather than representing any real global terrorist group or foreign dictatorship. G.I. Joe: Renegade, based on the episodes I've seen, is definitely a clever reworking of GI Joe's original ideas. Having the enemy cover their criminal activity under the guise of legal corporatism, and having the heroes be framed as criminals, was a brilliant idea. I don't see this show as having any jingoistic blind support of arrogant militarism either. A number of entertainments around the time did romanticize bad policies in military and politics for awhile, but neither of the GI Joe cartoons include such sentiments. The original GI Joe was an action sci-fi serial melodrama, and Renegades was a clever and more grounded reworking of the original. I still think both cartoons have something to teach people today about writing, voice acting, and art design for cartoons. Your idea of a GI Joe show influenced by Dr. Strangelove, Metal Gear Solid, and Winter Soldier sounds inspired. I would love to see a darkly humorous, politically satirical reworking of GI Joe, especially in how the heroes and supervillains are portrayed. Even a Metal Gear Solid-styled game based on GI Joe would be awesome. Next to Cobra, you could have jingoistic officers and corrupt politicians act as secret foes to GI Joe, and sabotage GI Joe's efforts to maintain world peace. Since Cobra's villains are already crazy, petty, and neurotic, making Cobra satirical would be easy. Cobra's origins starting out at a small American town would be a perfect setup for satirizing how sometimes the worst villains are the ones that live closer to home. The closest thing we have to a satirical take on GI Joe is The Venture Bros. In the episodes Invisible Hand of Fate, SPHINX Rising, and OSI Love You, you see very darkly satirical takes on GI Joe and Cobra. OSI, which is a fusion of GI Joe and Marvel's SHIELD, regularly committed war crimes against their Cobra-like foes, and took orders from a secret shadow government. SPHINX, which is an Egyptian take on Cobra, are portrayed as dysfunctional crazed losers who only continue being bad because they've got nothing really else to live for. The show satirically claimed that the reason SPHINX operatives still fought OSI, despite losing, was because they had cyanide chips in their brains the ensured 100% loyalty. Not being able to remove those chips made them want to fight OSI one last time in SPHINX Rising. I really recommend checking those episodes out. The SPHINX parody of Cobra Commander is hilarious and spot on. Even the Monarch's crew and the Guild of Calamitous Intent serve as satirical takes on Cobra from GI Joe. You really ought to check The Venture Bros out.

Ok I agree with you but criticism on the military can be dangerous. It can lead to greater backlash than you know. I recommend caution if they did such a show.

Note that Larry Hama's original GI Joe comic was anti-war, pro-soldier, and took a balanced approach to criticizing both American socio-political ideology and that of its Cold War opponents. The original cartoon, made for small children, exhibited no such ambition...but then it would have been useless for it to do so. Your critique of the origins of ARAH is undermined by a lack of engagement with Hama's work, although I agree with your central premise re the promise of Renegades and its emphasis on the dangers of unregulated corporate greed. The show took a fresh approach that has largely gone unappreciated - and even maligned - by fans.

I don't see that Renegades has an anti-capitalism message simply because one corporation turns out to be a front for large-scale terrorism - supported by a woman who clearly hails from "elsewhere" no less. And making it too skeptical of the US military is bizarre when your heroes are all soldiers. Except Snake Eyes. 'Cause he looked like he was a ninja for hire or something... This show was of great quality for being aimed at children who watched the same channel that aired My Little Pony, which sums up half the problem. The other half might be the rumors I heard about Renegades getting axed because the Retaliation movie plot was going in the same direction. Who knows if that's true, but even if it's just a rumor, the show itself predicated even the title on the A-Team premise. After that, would they have to go on the run AGAIN for the Renegades title to be relevant?

I definitely agree with some context....about cooperate parts....could have worked on same cases on Military outlook also but like u said....it tried to look from and aspects of the so called ordinary joes....also unlike other previous series....buy focusing on only handful of characters the show was easier to focus on lesser yet ok details.....cause there are like hundreds of characters by now.......most of them died in the comics....but its hard to show the reality of political Military as it could lead to major controversies and Major backlashes.....animation wise true not very good....but neither was south park.......the story must capture the mind set of everyone possible.....how to do that in action show about military thoughts....simple....make an Enemy that can be more relatable rather than truth......the rest is about making show good but not toooo realistic or there will be plenty of deaths and real life firearms which parents still fear about what kids will learn may not be what was intended.......but nice show overall

Should show the problems with the V.A.

This show had some badass designs, especially the weapons and vehicles, the vehicles being 3D was so unique and fit with the 2D drawings so well. My only gripe was that I wish it was more mature, at least Teen rated and also wish we got that planned second season.

A great cartoon that offered something different but also respectful to the original source material. The animation was a bit problematic but the story and characters more than made up for it. Its cancellation was a crime against quality writing.

G.I Joe has always been about glorifying the military, that's kind of quintessentially what it is. It's also a property that exists to sell toys so capitalism is also a quintessential part of it. Rather than have them totally change the franchise to suit your tastes you'd be better off finding a different franchise that isn't the total opposite of what you want in entertainment.

Instead, I got an assessment that was completely ideologically driven--when it criticizes capitalism and/or the USA, it's good; when it doesn't go far enough in terms of criticizing capitalism and/or the USA, it's not living up to its potential. In short, the video isn't very helpful as a review. Too bad.

I agree with your assessment of this series, but honestly I’d say G.I. Joe has always had villains that are very topical. Obviously the original cartoon cobra is a meme, but the cobra of Larry Hama’s comics was a homegrown fascist terrorist organization that sought to radicalize Americans through ultranationalist and ethnocentrism. This is relevant because these comics were written during the Cold War when the villain on everyone’s mind was Russia and communism. The Russians do show up at a few points in the comics, sometimes as the enemy, but they’re generally depicted as reasonable, honorable soldiers that are doing their job faithfully the same way the joes are. The Russians even cooperate with the Joes on several occasions to take down more important enemies(usually cobra). Hama’s message throughout the comics was that the most dangerous threats facing America at the time came from within and that right wing extremism was a far more dangerous enemy than any rival superpower.

And of course, you're criticizing GI Joe for glorifying the military. You do realize that GI Joe as a series is practically American military porn, right? I mean, criticizing GI Joe for glorifying the military is like criticizing Super Mario for jumping, or criticizing the Transformers for turning into vehicles. If you want a series that criticizes the American military, might I suggest the first two Fallout games instead? At least there, the two groups descended from the US military, the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave, are both assholes who want you dead. Whereas GI Joe as a cartoon, as a toyline, as a movie franchise, and as a series is basically designed from the ground up to get the kids to love the military. Their first movie had them crushing a Cobra force right in front of Lady Liberty while Duke picks up the American flag, jetpacks it all the way up to Lady Liberty's crown, and plants it square on her noggin. This is the kind of military porn that not even Michael Bay could come up with. That, and other military units outside the Joes do get criticized even in the OG GI Joe. When some US admiral named George Lattimer defected to Cobra in the original show because the navy was about to scrap his beloved ship, the Montana, Cobra upgrades his ship with some kind of pulse modulator weapon that creates an EMP bubble which disables all missiles, ships, and airplanes within the radius of two miles. We see how effective this weapon was in disabling the Joes' aircraft, naval vessels, and missiles, and the Montana's guns were shown to still be able to destroy warships. The navy still decides to send an entire fleet against the Montana despite it being fully capable of sinking them. If it wasn't for the Joes' intervention in disabling the Montana's EMP defenses, the entire Atlantic Fleet would have been sunk by Cobra, showing how some people in charge of the military don't always think with their heads straight. And of course, in Renegades, the military is blind to Cobra's duplicity until the very end, making them more of an obstacle rather than an ally during most of the show's run due to their blind trust of Cobra. Instead of investigating the Joes' accusations against Cobra, they took the media's word for it and attacked their own, only being proven wrong by the show's end.

The exact points you made is why this series did not catch on. You can't be so critical of everything and expect to come out a "not a jackass" at the end. Being critical about capitalism is one thing but placing a terrorist group like Cobra as their image comes out as ridiculous. Who would trust these people with anything? Secondly to criticize the military? This show has military in its DNA. You can't really criticize what you know. Maybe have a antihero military that sometimes clashes with the Joes but the whole military?! And then come out of the end like: yeah, our economy system is terrorist organization, our military is a bunch of war mongers, our political system is a bunch of liars and cowards... but hey the people are... oh no no, I was wrong, the people are terrible too. At that point: what are the Joes really fighting for? Why should I care about this show if nothing is worth fighting for?
