This is the G&L Guitars Doheny Tribute - an offset guitar designed by Leo Fender himself and featuring a few evolutions to his traditional Jazzmaster and Jaguar designs!
At Thomann: thmn.to/thoprod/558812?offid=...
At Sweetwater: sweetwater.sjv.io/rQBdQ5
The Doheny looks like a Jazzmaster at first glance, but it has numerous features that make it different. First, we have the pickups, which are Leo Fender single coil MFD (Magnetic Field Design) pickups. They look like JM pickups, but they’re not. They’re also not P90s - as you will hear in the video, they are their own thing!
The guitar - resplendent in an Emerald Blue Metallic finish - also features G&L’s PTB (Passive Treble and Bass) tone pot design, which allows you to independently cut treble and bass from your sound. It’s an extremely practical system. We also have G&L’s Dual Fulcrum Vibrato bridge here - another Leo Fender design.
Otherwise, things are quite standard: we have a maple neck and 9.5” radius board, 21 medium jumbo frets, and a 25.5” scale length. It’s a beautiful guitar, and, with all the nifty Fender gadgets within, should offer us a wealth of tones beyond what the standard offset can deliver - and that’s exactly what we’re going to put to the test in this video! Here, I play the Doheny in as many different musical styles as I can, from country, folk and indie, to rock, blues, punk, metal and more.
Here are some links to the various playing samples and info bits:

My setup was as follows: I ran the Doheny into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head, using my Revv G3 for heavy distortion sounds and my Source Audio Collider for extra reverb/delay sounds. The amp went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done.
Here’s some links to those bits of gear:

Thanks so much! Really happy you enjoyed it. And yes, this guitar did make it kind of easy - I'd never really played MFD pickups for any length of time before and they're just so good, especially in combination with the PTB tone system! Such a well-thought out instrument. Cheers :)

I got one of these in black and it's fantastic. Don't know if it's been mentioned on here yet but the reason it sounds so good is because G&L use the same pickups on the tribute models as the ones in their US built ones. Excellent selling point imo

As someone who owns this guitar in pink as well as a squier classic vibe jazzmaster, I would agree this is an alternative worth much more than the price gap. This G&L is a MUCH nicer guitar in every way. Also, this is one of the best guitar reviews I’ve ever seen

I just knew the Doheny was really something very special and especially being made by G&L with their fantastic hardware and electronics AND at those more than reasonable prices too. I'm extremely glad I picked one up new from Sweetwater in the lovely sunburst version before they were all gone for good from that dealer. Seems to always happen that the best affordable gear too suddenly disappears and is in demand after the fact, like Fender's Blacktop and Classic 70's series did.

I bought a Tribute Doheny over a year ago after debating bw that and a Fender Player series offset. I haven’t once regretted my decision. My tip is that you can get a tremendous range of tone by making subtle adjustments to the pickup height . There are so many “sweet spots” depending on the type of tone you want to achieve !

Awesome demo! This might be my new favorite guitar! It can do it all, but without being more of the same. G&L did a really amazing job here bringing the Jazzmaster to the modern age without losing its heritage. I'm primarily a bass player, and their basses are great as well, but they never really got me, even though I really want to like them. But this guitar ticks all my boxes!

The G&L American made Guitars are made Fender old school. Separate benches with a guys doing a job. If you want a different PU or a maple neck on a guitar that in the catalog only says it's rosewood you can have it changed without hassle sometimes free sometime with a small increase to cover the difference. In short it is run very close to a Custom Shop. Also guys do not sit there all day only doing one model in one color they mix it up so the guy can enjoy working on the guitar. The guy in charge does most of the painting because he loves doing it. Guys really into guitars are encourage to move up. In short it is run like a small gourmet brand but not the gourmet prices. THANX FOR THE DEMO RICH ___ Hey! for you guys out there ! Do a thumbs up and if you haven't subscribed it takes second so do it. We can not afford to lose this great place where you honest reviews. Other sites never mention any drawbacks that each guitar can have. Where else will you see a G&L At other sites you get yet another damn Strat only shown because it was released with nothing different than a paint job????

Amazing reviewing dude. I have this guitar and love it, but considering trading for a Guild star fire jet 90 semi hollow…. I also have a squier jazzmaster that’s not nearly as good as this doheny but I would enjoy upgrading it. So I’m wondering if you think….. Do you think it would be a decent trade (values are close) And do you think I could mod a squier jazzmaster to be better than the doheny?
@RichWordsMusic
@RichWordsMusic 11 ай бұрын
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it! Hmm, good questions. I'd never heard of that Guild before and so I've not seen one or played one either, but it looks lovely. However, I would say it looks (and sounds, from the RJ Ronquillo demo I watched) like a much warmer, jazzier guitar. So my guess is it would be quite different to the Doheny, and also it's a semi-hollow body so it'll be a much bigger beast physically and will probably feed back more. For me personally, I would want to try it first before I traded it. Just in case! And if it fits, then maybe go for it... but it will be a hard job to beat the Doheny. With the Squier, you could make it pretty amazing with mods. However, I think you'll never gel with it as much as the Doheny, and if you consider the price of the Squier, plus mods (guitar + new pickups + electronics maybe, a new whammy bar, bone nut, better tuners, and maybe a full tech setup, etc.) then you're probably at a price where you could buy another Doheny or the Guild. So that would be another way to look at it. Sorry for the long comment - hope my ramblings help a bit! Let me know what you end up going for :)
@HappyChillmore
@HappyChillmore 11 ай бұрын
@@RichWordsMusic I really appreciate the thorough response! I didn’t really know about the feedback thing with a semi hollow. I play almost exclusively without distortion or much gain, so maybe it’s not much of an issue? Anyway, I’m going to meet the guy this weekend and bring both the doheny and the squier to see what he wants to do. I do have to say, while the Doheny is pretty much superior to the squier in every way and, to me, doesn’t need upgrades, there’s something about the squier that I love. It’s one of the CME exclusives with super thin white paint and gold pickguard. Anyway… if he wants the doheny I could always keeep the squier, upgrade it, and keep my eye out for a fender to one day transfer the upgrades onto. That could be a plan. Anyway I’ll let you know what happens this weekend, I’m nervous! Lol

So you preferred the G&L over the Fender? That's good to know - I am interested to also try the Performer Jazzmaster. Yeah, personally I don't need 22 frets, but I know many players love them! I guess the other choice is to ask G&L to make a custom one with 22 frets - but then you'd be looking at a massive price increase!

Yes! I went to guitar shop and played several guitars of both models for few times and IMO from craftsmanship, playability to overall value, Doheny tribute is no doubt my priority. For Tone, it’s very subjective but I would say Doheny is a tru rock machine, it’s so hot and fatter tone, like what you demo, from classic rock to even metal, this axe can well handle most of the genre with it’s unique MFD pickup and EQ Tone. If someone wants round and warm neck tone of tele or es335, it’s not the one obviously. I should point out that Fender Jazzmaster Performer has similar tremolo design; however, I feel uncomfortable when playing it as my back of finger touch the bridge very often, maybe it’s my playing style but I would suggest if someone is considering these two model (as they are all JM with strat tremolo), better to choose after playing them.

Really good advice on the vibrato as well... actually, after reading your post I now also want to test a Performer Jazzmaster to experience this for myself ;) Cheers and rock on!

Hi Rich. Great video 👍🏻 Did you find the fretboard too narrow with both the top and bottom ‘E’ strings too close to the edge of the fretboard? I really want to order one of these, but a lot of the comments on KZfaq mention this. Is it bad enough that I should be concerned about it? It is putting me off buying one which is a real shame.

Hi Peter, thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. Interesting, and no, that's not a problem I've experienced at all with this guitar. (I know exactly what you're talking about, though, because I've had it happen with other guitars from different brands, usually with the high/thinner E string.) That said, it's also going to be about the way you play I think... I noticed with the guitars where I had that issue that it only became a concern when I tried to play lead lines - which is something I basically never do! So in that sense it wasn't an issue. I did ask a local tech about it at one point, and he said that it could be down to the way the nut has been cut, so in theory it's a simple fix... but if the problem is more down at the bridge/saddle end, it's not going to be quite so easy to sort out. So, overall, there is (as with every new guitar) a little risk involved, but in my opinion a minimal one. I would say: try the guitar in person first if you can. That way you'll know straight away. If you're having to order online, then you take the risk, but you could always return the guitar afterwards if the issue was there and it was a problem for you. The bottom line for me is: this is a fantastic guitar, and one of the best sounding, feeling and playing guitars I own. So I'd love it if you (and anybody else!) would have the chance to own one. My advice would be go for it, and I think and hope you'll be fine :) Good luck, and let me know what you decide! All the best, Rich

Hi Rich, Thank you very much for your helpful reply, much appreciated. I think I will go for it 😀👍🏻 I think it is worth the risk as it sounds and looks incredible! I love your channel, definitely one of the best guitar channels on KZfaq. You put so much time and effort into your videos. Your playing style is an inspiration. Thanks again Rich. Take care 👍🏻

He did! I only learnt about all this recently when I visited G&L and got the whole history... Leo Fender was a pretty legendary guy by all accounts! He has left us with so many incredible instruments.

The G&L Tribute Doheny is not available in left handed. So for us lefties, it doesn't matter how good it plays. Blah, blah, blah, whatever. Makes no difference to me, I can't have one. Best to stick with Fender if you play left handed (can't believe I just put that in writing) and want a decent offset. I suggest you look at a Fender Jazzmaster - Pro II or there are several options for lefties at a G&L Tribute level - ie Player series (Mexican) or top-end Squires (Indonesian). It's still very limited but unlike G&L, lefty offsets are available. G&L need to lift their game. Let's not isolate lefties. Rather than concede defeat to Fender, get out there and compete in the left handed offset guitar market - remember lefties are 10% of the total market and G&L may be very surprised by the positive response they would get from lefties. We have a tendency to look after the companies that look after us.
