Leo re-invented and perfected the Precision Bass before he left us. Went back to old school and killed it with those amazing and useful electronics. That bass does it all. I see why you have it in the Arsenal.

Thanks Rick! He really nailed it with this bass. You can see the influences of all his past works mushed into this masterpiece. The second take of the Stingray Two band, the massive MFD pickup, the P placement, the toggle switch, everything is just so well done!

I agree completely. When Leo Fender and his team were working on the revisions to the P Bass line in 1957, they had few alternatives other than a split coil to bypass Gibson's patent (applied for...) on the side-by-side and sidewinder (mudbucker) humbucking designs. Without that constraining factor, the 1957 P Bass makeover may have ended up looking quite similar to the L-1000 with a 'normal' side-by-side style humbucker. Fun fact though, Seth Lover's patent for Gibson also contained a split coil configuration. I'm only guessing Fender got away with it because Gibson never did anything with the design while the patent was in effect. Gibson really could have sued for infringement if they chose to.

G&L doesn’t get enough love for how refined their instruments are. I still have never played a fender tele as good as the lone ASAT I played.

I don't think I've ever heard a single pickup passive bass with so many voices. I think I heard p-bass, jazz bass, sting ray and even some EB3 and Hofner shadings, and Lord knows what else.

I have one and it's my baby, and I can verify it is surprisingly versatile. Parallel for vintagey funk/disco, single coil for more rock tones, and OMG mode for reggae/dub/more "active" sounding styles. I consider it a "super P bass".

Man, it really needed no comment from you, just watching your face as you play this bass is enough to tell how much you like it. Great tones and a great review again! I really love this bass. Played a vintage L-1000 from the early 80s a few years ago at a second hand store. The sound blew me away, but unfortunately the overall condition wasn't that good. Wish I had the money to buy one of these reissues. Definitely has that unique midrange bite and definition, G&L is known for, plus that near perfect build quality you don't see too often these days anymore. Perfect workhorse with lots of character for any style of music, I think.

Thanks for this review. I used to own a 1981 L-1000 which had the black powder coated bridge that was used from late 1981 to mid-1982. I bought it from my guitar player's roommate for $200 so that he could cover his half of the rent. I sold mine probably 26 years ago and just bought the same model here in your review. The one thing I can say about the L-1000 and the MFD pickups is that they are perfect for recording. The sound engineer couldn't believe that signal coming from a passive bass.

I have two G&L basses, the Fallout Tribute and the CLF L-2000. The 2000 is a beast! I had the Tribute L-2000 but the neck was too chunky so I sold it and got the US version with the slim C neck. I'll post a pic on Discord. All US models are Plek'd at the factory. I looked at a lot of basses before going for the 2000. I have zero regrets. Its so awesome to see you giving GnL some recognition. A great slap player friend of mine had 1 back in the 80s, I think it was probably an L1000 and I was blown away by the sound. I never forgot that and started checking out and researching their newer stuff. My number 1 bass is, was, a usa geddy lee. A guitarist friend kept saying you should get a pbass. I saw the video of you reviewing the different L1000s and other videos on them and got the blueburst swampash. Its so awesome, the fattest tones. The 1 video I couldn't find was an l1000 and fender American p shootout. It seems like the GnL secrets getting outta the bag

I'm not sure, but I think what Leo was trying to achieve by designing this bass, was getting the tones of of three p basses in one bass. The 50s single coil, the split coil pbass and the stingray. This is a really nice bass. I'm surprised it wasn't more popular.
@PerpetuallyTiredMusician

I own one of these and it's my favourite. I don't use any other bass anymore it's my sub sonic home now. It is not a musicman sterling at all, at least it doesn't want to be tonally. It feels and sounds more like a p-bass that Leo never stopped designing (which might quite possibly be what it is). Love it can recommend it, I have a U.S one since I am a lefty. However the L2000 is available for us south paws as a tribute model if you don't want to fork out for the U.S made L-1000. The L-2000 is great and it sounds just as delicious when you ride the neck pickup only.

Also there are still some bodies and hardware/electronics up in the G&L surplus/parts store. I'd love to do some deep dives on things like bridges, etc, because I still don't know any other simple high mass bridge that has the sideways saddle locking feature like the G&L.

@russellzauner 3 жыл бұрын
Leo didn't want a full phantom coil and noise cancellation can rob tone if you're not careful. This is a design reduced to its simplest parts, straightforward, clean, get those tones. I guess if you want to route it out you can add one. ;-) I'd get one of those tribute bodies off G&L site and some of their surplus electronics and go about experimenting with what a ghost coil with those electronics and platform can be like, and it's about as apple/apples as it can get. Anything that comes of those experiments, they can likely be directly installed on a stock G&L platform with high confidence of replicating the config and the response of it.

Mine was from a small run that had rear access electronics ( no control plate,and a side-mount input jack). The other difference is it came from GL with one of their alnico humbuckers instead of an MFD pickup….i love it ,very warm with a sweet top end. The icing on this cake is the body is empress, and the bass weighs 6.5 ponds.

Another great showcase and review. I have never been into single pickup basses, but you make me question myself thoroughly here. By the way, I would be very much interested in hearing your opinion about other features of basses, like weight and balance. You always play sitting down, which is fine, but for me weight and balance are rather relevant characteristics of a bass. Just a throught. Keep up the great vids. One of the best bass channels around.

@@pwhite102 I am able to position my plucking hand without using a ramp. Alas, without a pickup near the bridge, that thick, nasal, passive-tone-control-all-the-way-off jazz sound is quite impossible to get. That's why I own a P-bass with a J pickup at the bridge ;-)
@LowEndLobster
@LowEndLobster 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Patrick! Yeah sometimes I forget to mention the weight/balance, especially if it's not noteworthy in its badness (this bass weighs 9 lbs on the dot and balances very well!) I'll keep trying to remember in future vids :). In regards to the strap stuff, I'll discuss that in next weekend's full review of the Bootlegger. I find there's so many variables when it comes to strap balance, not only with the strap quality/design but with the build of the player. It's a variable which I don't really like to address because of all those external variables outside of the bass itself.

I’d love to see a video on the L-2000, apparently it sounds incredibly similar to a Wal Bass. I’m a big Rush nut and Geddy Lee played one in the 80s-90s, but Wal Basses are like $3,000!

I don't have a Wal so I can't *really* compare but my L2000 Tribute has a lot of that same growl and snarl that a Wal has. It's pretty great in a pinch but it's not gonna sound exactly the same.

The L2000 is really the Swiss Army knife of basses. It really can get a really wide range of tones. Yes it does sound very similar to a Wal bass. So that is one of the many sounds and tones you can get from that bass.

I own both an L-2000 and an L-2500, both from the tribute series (made in Indonesia). As they have the exact same electronics as the made-in-USA ones. You can hear them both in a metal context on my channel. Sound wise, these G&L L-series basses are my undisputed favorite. I can comment on build quality only in regards to the made in Indonesia ones. On those, you will want to replace the tuners at some point, as they are heavy, clunky and feel quite cheap. I put Gotoh tuners on my 4-string and Schaller ones on my 5 string. One of the Schaller ones broke after half a year and I had to get a warranty replacement. Having the experience now, I like the Gotoh tuners the best on the market. They feel smoothest and most well made and hold the tuning remarkably well. The next thing that will need replacing at some point are the mini switches. I've had my L-2500 since 2011 and after 6 years of daily use, the pickup selector switch gave up. But hey, that gave me the opportunity to learn soldering. All in all, great instruments!

@@LowEndLobster The more L2k stuff, the better! :) I really love mine. I had a different one about a year ago and I sold it like an idiot, and I've been jonesing after another one ever since. I finally had some funds and I found a good deal on a Tribute and now I'm never ever gonna let it go.

Man, I love the G&L stuff! How cool would it be if there was another model with two humbuckers, but the bridge one a bit more towards the neck so it was in stingray position? For me the ultimate Leo Fender beast! With the option of operating the outer coils you could even still get a jazzbass like tone.
@michaelblaney4461
@michaelblaney4461 3 жыл бұрын
Lumpi Nator the L2000 is that bass 2 pickups and preamp. But the bridge humbucker is maybe a little closer to the bridge then this stingray. My L2000 does not really sound exactly like my Ray 34 though.

@lumpinator 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelblaney4461 I know the L-2000. And as you say, it's bridge humbucker is closer to the bridge resulting in a different sound than a stingrayish position.
@mouthmw
@mouthmw 3 жыл бұрын
@@lumpinator you can't have the exact P and Stingray positions in one bass. They overlap. There's always gonna be a compromise for one or the other. In my opinion, the L2K's position is already perfect for a dual humbucker configuration. Stingray's HH for example have the H too close to the neck and it's just a boring, dull, muddy tone there IMO.
@lumpinator
@lumpinator 3 жыл бұрын
@@mouthmw do they really overlap? I guess you get both positions by placing both Pickups back to back. Maybe not exactly but close enough. Quite like the Warwick corvette $$ approach.
