I have enjoyed the interview of Gen Panag thoroughly. He has talked a lot of sense and made the conversation interesting and absorbing. To his credit Gen Panag has steered away from the controversy while emphatically advancing his view point , and projecting himself as a prudent and erudite ex senior officer of the Indian Army. Like many of us his heart still beats for the Army. He is bang on when he alludes that only talking of the two and a half front war is futile if it is not backed by necessary wherewithal. Historically, strong economy backed by equally strong military and national social cohesion is the crux of projecting India as a reckoned world player . My compliments to Saurabh Dwivedi who along with his back room boys has the art of sifting , and coming out with questions that bring out the essence of any book they review with its author.

Gen Panag in the beginning mentions 'basha'. I've often wondered about this word and its use, particularly in the Indian army. I was interested in its provenance but could find no clue till, during the course of reading a short story by a hindi author from Bihar I found the word 'basa', which meant 'dwelling'. Similarly I heard a Chambyali folk song 'Tara reya jogia kuth tera basa' on KZfaq. Here too 'basa' means 'dwelling'. So 'basha' is actually 'basa'.

I beg to differ with gen.penang.It is only recently that armed forces are being used to win elections.Few years ago we never saw a gen.in service appearing on T.V to give statement in favour of modi govt.I personally feel vested interest driving some senior officials in the forces to bat for modi govt.This is highly demoralising and setting bad precedents for next generation.

Government should respect the intelligent and patriot general, take their advice for the betterment of the country.

Sir as you said there is need to change training in NDA....similarly soldier recruitment and training should be improved....Current army recruiting procedure is unefficient and it lacks clarity.....in army rallies 200-300 boys run in 1 batch in which many get injured,boys who start run from last line are at disadvantage & they dont get Full time to Complete the race as said by army in Notification....medical standards are not clear one gets accepted one time and next time same person get rejected and their are reports of corruption in recruitment .and training part is worse recruits are verbally and physically abused most of the time they do drills which are useless for a soldier....our equipments are modernizing but our training is similar to 50s-60s

I am an Army brat and I have an opinion that might not be popular with many. All I have to say is the quality of some of the generals (serving and retired) are way below the high standards previously set. Some of these generals are yes men to their political masters and this can be detrimental to Army's political neutrality. Generals like Manekshaw and General Cariappa, who set very high standards and were followed by some other great Generals have been let down by Generals like VK Sing and Bipin Rawat who have shown that they are not politically neutral. I am aware of these kinds of conversations many of the retired army officers have behind closed doors and there have been letters written by previous Generals to some of these officers requesting them to abstain from these things. This bad precedence set by these Generals is going to give a black mark in the great lineage of the Indian Armed Forces. The way Manekshaw said no the Indira Gandhi and other political masters of those times is something that we are proud of, unlike some of them who walk with their tails between their legs when they see their political masters, but claim to be..... what ever.
