Mountainous village of ZIA with a breathtaking sunset - Kos, Greece
Zia is a mountain village, strongly developed in terms of tourism on the island of Kos. It is located about 15 km (approx. 30 minutes by car) from Kos town and is the highest village on the green slopes of the Dikeos massif. The tourist infrastructure is very well developed with its numerous taverns and tourist souvenir shops, especially textile and herbal shops. You can also get to the village with various tourist offices. The price of such trips by coach ranges from 6-8 EUR, depending on the tour schedule.
The attraction of this place is a wide observation deck at a height of approx. 300 m above sea level overlooking the northern part of the island of Kos with the islands of Kalymnos and Pserimnos and the neighbouring Turkish mainland as well as regular folklore evenings for organized tourists. A unique sunset, which is clearly visible from here, is especially promoted.
The upper part of the village is quieter and more authentic, and is also the starting point of the marked hiking trail to the main peak of the Dikeos Mountains, which is under the same name as the entire massif at 843 meters above sea level.
Taverns we visited:
- Watermill of Zia - a charming cafe, perfect for tasting fresh lemonade or canelada.
- Sunset Balcony Tavern - famous for tasty, traditional Greek food and a great view of the sunset.
- Metoxi Cafe - the highest tavern in the village of Zia, difficult access (partly by a gravel road).
- and many other tavernas, where I was not trying food, but they look wonderful.
