The cars used to transport molten iron, or "hot metal", resembled submarines and were commonly called "sub cars". They transferred hot metal from the blast furnace to the Hot Metal Mixer, located at the entrance to the Melt Shop. Hot metal was poured into a ladle that sat on a special car. It never left the Melt Shop, but shuttled to the furnaces where the ladle crane poured the hot metal into the furnaces. On the other end were the slag pots. It was the job of the Union Railroad to pick up the slag pots from Carrie Furnace, Edgar Thompson, and Duquesne Works and shuttle them to the West Mifflin slag dumps. My bedroom window faced the Taylor Dump, and as a kid I spent many hours watching the slag trains. Today, only ET remains in operation, and trucks ferry the slag from Braddock to West Mifflin.

Some of the LGB cars where made in the 90’s. Pretty sure their just basic small brushed motors inside with a gear reduction.
