Technically a more accurate translation would be 'the sun lowering in the west, together we watch the setting sun', but it sounds rather awkward in English. 日落西 and 斜阳 both make references to the sun using different characters (日 and 阳), but would result in the same word 'sun' being used twice when translated; therefore making the line seem repetitive in English.
