This run of Aida was not a good one for Caballe, but this single extant recording of Robert Nagy's excellent (and last minute) Radames makes it a fascinating must. First 30 seconds opening of Act 3 missing. Some over recorded distortion.

Bravo Robert Nagy! So far I've only heard his very respectable rendition of "Celeste Aida", but I'm looking forward to hearing this complete recording. I only ever heard Nagy "live" in comprimario roles in the late 1980s--early 90s and the squillo his voice was consistently impressive. Thank you for posting.

Nagy was mainly at the Met to cover the big roles. In later years he still pulled down a nice salary as the "second cover", which is something a great company like the Met needs, especially with tenors.

@@promptersbox Oh, you erased what I wrote? I'm sorry if I offended. I came back here to say that I mentioned hearing Amara, but I didn't say anything about what YOU said. Curtis-Verna was your first Turandot? I did listen a bit to the performance. She certainly COULD sing the role!

Someday, I hope a recording of Nagy's Otello, either from the MET or another stage, surfaces.

Caballé on a less-than-great day is frankly better and more interesting than many singers’ good days. She’s an actual Verdi soprano (even if her tenuous relationship to text is an issue).

I get what you’re saying, but it wasn’t good. Sure, some good phrases here and there, but it was bad. In bad voice, uncommitted acting. Not a great run of Aidas.

It should be noted that Spring 1976 was very busy at the Met.. she also sang Ariadne

In French, it’s a somewhat old-fashioned way, wich i like very much, to say that someone is off the mark 😅

I found, I suppose authentic, bust of AMENIRDIS and if Marilyn Horne’s face were Nubian, they would be quite similar. She liked her own Amneris. The name Amneris sounds more Nubian than AMENIRDIS herself.

Caballe wasn't disastrous as Aida during this event. There are some fine moments still. But she no longer had a voice for Aida at this point. Nagy rather anonymous as Radames. Horne wasn't annoying as per usual and, in fact, quite bearable without her congested sound. MacNeil was out of prime, but despite all odds, Amonasro wasn't much of the struggle for him. A little bit of a wobble, but that wasn't much of the problem. Overall, some uneven main cast, but worthy to listen, nevertheless.

I'd say Caballe tends to rely too much on her pianissimi on this occasion.

@OperaMatinee after a certain point, it's rather become a trick. It's rather become opaque in sound as well.

Have to disagree here. Caballe was never right for Aida. Here she’s squally, at full volume and uncomfortable throughout. Sure, there are some piani, but its really a mess. She forgets the text, as she did as Ariadne. She was a train wreck in 76. The thing about Nagy is that he sang one line roles forever, but would step into a dramatic role and he’d be wonderful. You cant really tell from here but his voice was HUGE. I saw three of these Aidas. In act 3 Caballe would throw herself to the ground only to be helped up by MacNeil. She coukdnt get up herself.

Caballe is making up words all over the place, and virtually nothing above the staff is intelligible, whether Ghislanzoni or not. People constantly rag on Sutherland for her diction, but next to this, she's Racine. . . . .

Esta mujer tiene una dicción incluso peor que Sutherland....pasa de pronunciar. Y los agudos están gritados...una Aída ... Para nada referencial.

Aida was never a good fit for Caballe but she is at least a true Verdi voice unlike the overparted Horne who should have never sung any Verdi.

Why do you consider Horne as overparted? She sounds pretty impressive here. She is maybe a little short on the very top (Radames duett) but no shorter than Cossotto was in the Leontyne Price TV broadcast

Horne could have been a good Preziocilla. Caballé's Aidas till 1974 were pretty amazing.
