DISCLAIMER - Permanently modifying your lathe should only be done if you fully understand and accept the risk that you could do irreversible damage to your machine. If you're not comfortable performing these machining tasks then DON'T DO IT!
After spending quite a bit of time thinking about how I could create a better solution for adjusting the compound angle on my Grizzly G0768 lathe I finally got a clue on the solution by watching one of my favorite KZfaq channels - MrPete222 AKA Tubalcain. Check out his channel here - kzfaq.info He was taking apart a compound on one of his lathes when I saw the dovetail shaped pin on the compound swivel plate. After taking careful measurements I decided to make the part I needed and modify the compound mounting block to the point of no return. I'm not certain but I have to assume that many of the small Chinese lathes have the same compound adjustment design as the G0768 and if so maybe this video will help you if you decide to gamble on doing the upgrade to your lathe.

Dude, stop saying you're a hobbyist machinist. You're a home machinist big difference. The only thing you lack is experience and that always comes with time. Coming up with the dovetail was genius. As well as following through to the final product. So, keep up the great work. I'm sure you're this meticulous with all the things you make. Thx for sharing.

Excellent idea... That is one of the last modifiations I am going to do on my Mini Lathe... Have not got an exact design but I will make something simple...I have made a guard for the carriage gears, all new handles with 3/4 inch balls on top, made new idea carriage lock, new t-nut and shaft for the cam lock on the tail stock, new 5/16 inch carriage gib plates from oilite material and use studs and lock nuts to adjust carriage gibs, no more of those silly set screws...Thanks for sharing...Frank

Do the existing vertical holes cause trouble or are the brass pins long enough they bridge that gap? Wish you had shown cutting the taper to see the tool shape to get in.
@chriskucia8348
@chriskucia8348 Жыл бұрын
This seems like a much easier mod than the hogging out material for accessible nuts. Slightly different approach might be to leave a centering nub on top of the taper so top diameter of the taper wouldn't be as critical to get right to match the bored hole, but that's just a quibble.

Great idea! The G0768 is a 8x16 lathe, which is just slightly larger than a mini. (My mini is a 7x16 with a brushless DC motor.) The part you modified is exactly the same as on a mini, but perhaps not in size. Because of the vast number of mini's out there, this plan really needs to get to some of the mini groups. But because the mini, the 8x16 and the 9x20 lathes all use a MT3 spindle and a MT2 tailstock, I have no immediate plans to upgrade unless I go to a Grizzly 10x22 which has a MT4 headstock and a MT3 tailstock. The Grizzly 10x22 has to be a cool machine, its name is inspiring because it reminds me of the Ruger 10/22.

nice mod. I have been thinking of doing such an oparation to my compound, but was not shure if it would clamp down enough. I had a slighly wider cone in mind, and the clamping screws offset to the radius (one more in front, and one more to the back of the slide. I saw something like that on a lathe once. Nice that you showed this, and be the forerunner with the guts.. indeed it is very annoying when you have to set the compound for reproducing a taper with the standard locking mechanism. cheers.

I built a pretty cool stepped aluminum tool that I chuck up into a hand drill to quickly rotate all of the handwheels on this machine. Each step fits the ID of the handwheels which keeps it perfectly centered. I bought a long T-handle allen wrench that works great for the 2 compound screws,especially since you don't have to turn these screws much to loosen them.

Brilliant design, very well done, thanks for the video. I’m going to try it on my 7 x 12. But I think I’ll try it by leaving all the original holes alone. I’ve seen replacement slides which put a second set of holes closer to one end, they sell it with the upside that you can turn a larger diameter and it’s easier to adjust the angle because the slide has to be moved less. Unfortunately it leaves a guy with the same clamping style. If I machine my slide like you did but in the second location they put holes in (on my unmolested slide) I should get all they advantages of your upgrade and the increased distance advantage of their idea while not touching the original machining. Another plus is I won’t be intersecting the original retainer bolt bores as the new location is solid steel, and later I can always go back to stock if need be. Thanks

I just did an AXA tool post conversion on my G0768 and I found that I needed to lower the height of it to get a better working range on the tool holders. I milled .40" off of the bottom of the tool post and the milled out the center at the bottom to accept the large base on the slide. Rather than remove the press fit threaded rod from the cross slide, I extended the thread another inch or so on the rod and then shortened and center bored the AXA rod, then tapped it to thread over the smaller rod. I guess both roads lead to the same place just a bit different recipe. I like your angle fix and will incorporate that into my cross slide.

Did you post any videos on milling the AXA QCTP to fit onto the G0768? Seems the OXA size tool post is shorter, and the AXA size needs more than just a spacer which would raise the height of the tool shank. Thanks,

Thanks for posting, I think I may have seen something similar but memory isn't what it was. Would a larger diameter dovetail work better? It would mean boring toolholder much bigger diameter but should lower the amount of torque available to move things. Also, is there a preferred angle which would lock better

Good modification - I do a lot of screwcutting and as you say it's a pain to have to wind the compound right out. Just one point - for screwcutting you need the compound (or top slide as we call it in the UK) at an angle of 60 degrees (or 55 for BSF etc) to the lathe bed not 30 degrees....... It is of course 30 degrees to the end face. Just one other thing - I have both a QC toolpost and the standard but find there's far too much flexibility with the QC item causing chatter especially when turning stainless which I do a lot.
@gangleweed
@gangleweed 4 жыл бұрын
That's a load of rubbish.....the American way is to swing the compound over at half the thread angle and the Brit way is with the compound parallel to the work piece and feed it sideways a few Hundreths MM as you go deeper......been doing it that for 60 years , now retired, but still do it that way.

What a clever idea. I found this video because my new today G0768 lathe did not have a working compound at all. Once I saw how it was supposed to work I removed the tool post, reinserted the bolts and tapped on the bolts with a small hammer repeatedly until the disk came free. The parts have an interference fit and there is no possibility of rotating the tool post ounce the bolts have been tightened. I won't be using your idea to fix this poor machining and poor design problem until I have a lathe that works as I need the compound feature to make your dovetail part. I knew I'd have to do some cleaning to get this lathe to work smoothly but this problem seems a bit much. Thanks for making the video as I did not know what I needed to know until a saw your modification.

Just last night I spent 4-5 hours on the lathe creating parts for a new project and it still runs great. I do like the variable speed option, it allows me to make adjustments on the fly that can help with the quality of finish I get on the material. One thing you will want to do no matter what model you get is to pull the spindle and remove that sticky, waxy grease that comes from the factory. The manual will tell you what type of grease to use. I got mine from my local Farm & Fleet store. Replacing the grease made a huge difference in how smooth the lathe runs. It was almost a year before I changed mine and I feel like I dodged a bullet because of how dry the bearings were when I pulled it apart. No matter which one you get, good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the reply. One more question if you've got time: Do you turn steel much? I'd probably be working with steel more than aluminum. If you've turned much steel, how much of a cut do you usually take off in a pass?
@tegelermusic
@tegelermusic 7 жыл бұрын
I do turn steel quite a bit. I usually take 20-30 thou cuts. Although I did just upgrade to a carbide insert set of tools from Shars so I might be able to go a little deeper. I'll have to experiment when I get a chance. My original set of tools were the blue set from Grizzly with the brazed on carbide tips. They worked surprisingly well for the money.

Just as a matter of interest, I have a 1920/30 Colchester Bantam lathe and the compound is fixed in the same way as you show here.....nothing new under the Sun apparently...…...trouble is it only has one screw at the front of the crosslide against a dovetail bung so it doesn't really clamp the compound down all that tight.....I'll add two more screws, one in each side of the back of the crosslide at 120 deg angles to the single one to give it more grip. I've seen somewhere a lathe that had 3 screws spaced at 120 deg around the base of crosslide…...I might do that mod as the present method is not all that secure. BTW, don't breathe the smoky fumes from that vapourising oil as it will rot your lungs out, you should always use a water based coolant if you want to just drip or dab it on.....cutting with neat oil should be done with a flood to stop it smoking.

Great video Don. I bought the same lathe a few months and also modified to use a quick change tool post. Even though this is my first metal lathe I thought it was a pain , and poor design, for the one time I angled the compound. So I certainly appreciate this video and will be making the same mod to mine. You mention the 2 outer diameter dimensions but I wonder if you could me the step heights of those diameters so I came make the part without having to take my compound apart first. I understand how the dovetail part of it works and that the angle is not really critical but could you also tell me the height of your dovetail.
@tegelermusic
@tegelermusic 7 жыл бұрын
The 2 step heights are the same as the original part so you can just get those from your part. I'm still trying to get the new shop set up and the lathe is buried right now so as soon as I get it set up again I'll try and get that dovetail measurement for you. I'm spending way too much time running the music store lately and it's taking me away from my shop time:(

Thanks for the reply Don. I was anxious to perform this mod on my lathe and was going through and making all the adjustments anyway. So I took the step measurements off my original part and decided to make my dovetail 5/8 inches in diameter at the large end. I also made it 5/8 of an inch high. I don't know my angle, just fudged it since it's not all that critical.

Do you happen to have the information available how you modified the compound to get the QCTP to work. I have only seen one other person do this and was not the same way as you. I like yours better and want to know what to do before ordering this lathe.
@tegelermusic
@tegelermusic 7 жыл бұрын
I don't have any video of the mod I did to the QCTP but what I did was to first remove the existing threaded stud. I think it was a press fit so I just drove it out. Then I drilled the hole in the compound to the proper tap size for the new QCTP stud and then tapped it. Once that was done I had to deal with that collar that sticks up. I couldn't take it off because that was the bulk of metal that I tapped into so I made a spacer with that size hole in the center for the QCTP to sit on. The last thing I did was to put a pin in the spacer and the bottom of the QCTP so when I rotated the post the spacer would also rotate. The spacer also helped with setting a nominal height for the QCTP in general which made it easier to center my tools without them having to be set too high on the tool post. Hope this helps. Make sure to post a video if you get this lathe. I love to see what other people are doing with these small lathes.

I just ordered the G0768 lathe today, which it is back ordered. It should be in stock in 2 weeks and I should have it around Christmas! Now that you have described how you done your QCTP and after seeing that bottom plate I understand how you completed the task. Well done! I was shopping at LMS and noticed that they have a drop in/bolt on QCTP www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=4157 . However it is on Backorder. Basically you drive the pin out of the slide and install a longer one and they provide plate that fits the boss. I think I will give it a try. I will be sure to do some videos of some projects. I do plan on doing some reviews of the actual lathe after I run it for a little bit. I looked all over the internet and found very few reviews of the G0768. I was really torn between G0768 and the G0602. I really liked the bed length of the 602, but I am still pretty new and dont really care for threading at higher speed, so the VFD made the choice for me and a few other things. Is there any other tips/tricks or must have items for this lathe you have found ? Thanks for your help
@tegelermusic
@tegelermusic 7 жыл бұрын
That set from LMS looks perfect for what you need. I'm not sure if it was available when I got my lathe or at least I wasn't aware of it, but it looks like it would have made things a lot easier. As far as tips or tricks, that's an endless list. One thing I would recommend you do when you get it is to take apart the cross slide and compound and spend some time cleaning and honing the dovetails. There are some pretty sharp edges that you want to knock off. Also spend some time leaning about adjusting the gib screw tension. You want the slides to move smoothly but they need to be as solid as possible to get decent results. Good luck, and I hope you don't have to wait too long before you get your lathe. It'll drive you nuts.

Hi Don, and everyone else who might need to know. One has to pull the front control panel off and move the speed sensor out of the way prior to removing the spindle and bearings. The ring that is screwed onto the spindle breaks a light beam on the sensor to produce the speed. Also, there is another ratio available on the belt drives if you flip the top pulley on spindle you can drop down to 340 rmp max. :) Thank you for your videos. I should make on doing the bearings I guess.

Don......... I do enjoy your video's. I e-mailed Grizzly 4 day ago asking what size the through hole was in the 4" chucks that came on the Grizzly G0768. They are ether very busy or have a lousy service department. Could you please tell me the through hole size of your 4" chucks? Also what is the model number of your Quick Change Tool Post? Thanks Don

The hole in both the 3 & 4 jaw chuck is right at 7/8". I can easily put 3/4" round bar in with just a little play. You might get some 7/8" stock in there but it would be a snug fit. The tool post I bought was the G5689 set from Grizzly. It doesn't work without modifying the compound because of the different size hold down rod and the collar I pointed out in the video. It wasn't easy to get it to work but I can't imagine using my lathe without it so it was definitely worth the effort.

Thank you for the comment. No I didn't check it with an indicator, mostly because the cross and compound slides are not very solid to begin with on these small lathes and this QCTP hold down is definitely more solid than the slides. If I do an operation that requires a rigid setup, like parting off steel, I find myself locking down all the compound gib screws along with the carriage.

This mod long with "Lever-Operated Compound Lock for Mini-Lathe" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p8mPmJuHsanaoHU.html makes for some pretty gnarly improvements.

Good video bad camera. What camera are you using? I'll make sure not to buy it. autofocus = tick tickity tick? Sorry, that's just annoying.

It's a T3i. I learned my lesson with that camera to not to use it for capturing audio. It takes really good video but I'll never use it with auto focus again. When I start doing videos again I plan to use my Go Pro for everything. I'm moving my shop so hopefully this fall I'll have time to do more videos.
