In the back back days there were Black records and charts and white records and charts. MJ was the first real crossover artist with Thriller. He had to fight to get on MTV. Finally his record company threatened to pull its white performer off the channel. One color line broken. I'm old enough to remember all this so it didn't surprise me to hear him say No. 1 Black record.

Your point is valid but Motown had crossover artists like the Temps and the Supremes before Mike. MJ may have been the biggest but he wasn't the first.

I think the difference is that the 'white charts' were not called 'white'. They were just the charts. Or were named for Rock and Country and Pop and were not named for a color. So it makes it seem like the Black Charts were segregated and black artists were restricted (even though George Michael was on there).
