Can’t continue to reference the Iceland 2016 defeat without acknowledging that we were 30 seconds away from an equally or maybe even worse defeat this tournament at the hands of Slovakia. He got multiple get out of jail free cards this tournament, predominantly from the benched players, but still couldn’t make the big, brave decisions in yet another final, that let’s be honest, England had no business being in. We need a manager now who has some grit and courage and wants to play front foot football.

Totally agree with Agbonlahor, Southgate was under contract, this is not a Charity, its a results based business and winning is the standard, if this was a foreign manager the narrative would be different! Call it out for what it is, tournament football is all about tactics and Gareth can't give you that at a high level and hes not winning you anything!

Southgate reaching semi-finals and finals has as much to do with luck of the draw, as it has to with his work. His biggest opportunity was a home tournament in 2021, and losing the final against an average Italy team. That game is his legacy.

Southgate has achieved the bare minimum to be considered ok. Every single team we played that were half decent beat us. He's lost every challenging game England have had in tournament football despite having incredible luck in groups and brackets. The bare minimum should be the final with the talent and luck of the draw we had. England failed in tough games in the last 3 tournaments. This 4th proves that it's the manager who is at fault.

The problem with managing national teams is that you don't have much time to instill your ideas and get the side to adapt. That's why Pep wouldn't be all that much better. Klopp maybe, or Tuchel. Keep it simple and be practical with team selection. No square pegs in round holes because they play well with their club...

Madison, Grealish, Sterling and Rashford didn't deserve to get selected for the squad. All 4 of them didn't do enough to force their way in. Anthony Gordon had an opportunity against Iceland pre-tournament and wasted it. He was poor. Harry Kane was the captain, and Southgate explained why he was selected. It was because the experienced players from previous tournaments were not available. You can say he was wrong about that, but he was paid to make these decisions. I you had a poll running, a large majority would say that England will not win a Men's international tournament in 2026 or 2028, even with the World Class players the country claims to have.
