Agreed. A bearded, messianic figure striding down the aisle to that superb overture - Monteverdi would have approved.

You may already know, but overtures like this one were written specifically for the entrance of nobility before the opera began. The fact that this is the first only underscores what a genius Monti was.

Yes, the opening toccata from this opera, L'Orfeo, composed by Monteverdi and here conducted by Jordi Savall. The whole performance is really astonishing! A recommended acquirement. Look for it on amazon, for instance
I actually teared up-idk why. Maybe at the thought he probably never knew how famous his music would be and transcend generations to this moment. History coming alive.

Claudio Monteverdi (baptized 15 May 1567 - 29 November 1643) was an Italian composer, choirmaster and string player. A composer of both secular and sacred music, and a pioneer in the development of opera, he is considered a crucial transitional figure between the Renaissance and Baroque periods of music history. Why do you all mind the the drummer's beard? At the lifetime of Monteverdi large beards had been in fashion. And by my opinion this is a wonderful interpretation of Monteverdi's Toccata - large beard or not...

It would be awesome to film "Richard II" using this overture as the soundtrack to an opening shot of King Richard in a beautiful procession scene, then bringing it back again just before the end as the soundtrack to a shot of his body being carried from the Tower.
@ChupeTTe Жыл бұрын
Actually it would be more fitting in a scene where the Doge of Venice arrives, because Monteverdi was venecian and proud of it.
