Arsenal rolled up to the Etihad to take on Manchester City in one of the most important games of the season this afternoon and while some say the game was a snooze fest, others saw it as a defensive masterclass.
For Erling Haaland, it was yet another day of suffering as he was swallowed up by Saliba and Gabriel for the third time this season. Does Arsenal have the best defense in the world?

Arsenal vs Manchester City is a great example on why Erling Haaland will only an elite striker not a complete footballer. With the amount of goals he was scoring there’s nothing wrong with that, but I just feel like people hype him up a little too much and push an agenda that a number 9 like him can truly be the best player in the world. He has a lot of limitations in his game and he can only be the best at scoring goals in my opinion. Yes it’s the hardest thing to do and he masters it so well, but other than his goals what does he contribute to the team. I know his presence is vital to creating space for the other players on the team which is why Pep doesn’t bench him when he’s not in form, but Manchester City are carrying a passenger who beyond the goals without the ball, he does nothing. It’s too easy for defenders to take him out of the game so easily and he needs to do a better job in coping with that. I don’t think that Pep’s system allows him to do that. This is one of my issues I have when people compare him to Kylian Mbappe, similar to the Messi and Ronaldo debate, people say that Haaland is a better goalscorer than Mbappe and yes he’s elite at what he does and scoring goals is how you win the game, but people also have to realize that there’s more to football than just numbers, it’s not all about scoring goals it’s not the only metric that makes a player good. Roy Keane said that his overall game was like a League Two player meaning that you don’t see enough of him when he’s not scoring. Credit to Gabriel and Saliba where it’s due, but whether he’s playing against Virgil Van Dijk William Saliba Gabriel or Antonio Rudiger, I just feel like other top center backs have his number and this is an asset of his game that he can improve on even if you’re so good at scoring goals.

Mbappe still starts at LW half his matches and it’s his preferred position. Even when he officially starts at striker he’s generally playing out wide, there’s a very stark difference between his heat map and Kane’s/Haaland’s/most other strikers and it’s not only because sometimes PSG plays wit 2 strikers up front. I always include him with wingers instead even though he’s technically played the striker position way more in his career (mostly against his will it appears based on what he’s said). He can technically still be considered a striker and if we were to include him then imo he’s easily first but I usually don’t. He’s definitely gonna be stuck at striker again when he (likely) goes to Madrid cuz of Vini but I wouldn’t be surprised if he falls back into his old habits cuz he really hates the standard striker position/role

A lot of people say that Gabriel and Saliba shut Haaland down. Don’t get me wrong they did a very good job today they played well, but this isn’t the first time where Haaland didn’t really impact the game very much he was nowhere to be seen as too many times he’s not touching the ball and takes himself out of the game too much. They seem to have his number this season because when they’ve started together for Arsenal against Manchester City, Haaland hasn’t scored. Once again it was another ghosting performance from him in a big game.

Its not just locking him up though. It's completely neutralizing the threat he poses. Not an assist, not a lay off, not a glanced header - not so much as a decoy run that opened space for another City player to hurt us. Even when Haaland does not get a kick of the ball with other teams, he is still a nuisance but not with us. He on probation against Arsenal, can't so much as twitch a finger without our say so. It's been great to watch!

Yup. His weaknesses are getting exposed the more time passes and it doesn’t make him trash, it’ll just hurt him against competent defenses. He can normally deal wit defenders dat are high IQ and defenders dat are physical beasts on their own but 2 of them in one backline? He’s getting starved all game, Arsenal’s defense is perfectly built to contain him. It’s why he still cooked Arsenal last year at the Etihad despite Gabriel playing. Way easier for him when they’re not together cuz as a duo? It would take combined stinkers and a lot of bad luck to get anything against them

I agree. Everyone is noticing his weaknesses beyond just the goals. No matter how many goals he scores, that alone I just don’t think he can truly be the best player in the world because in order to be the best, on top of scoring, there are other facets that make a player elite. Haaland’s skillset beyond the goals are so limited and the numbers cover up the cracks he has in his game.
