The USA's Gabrielle Douglas wins the Gold medal in the women's artistic gymnastics individual all-around event in the North Greenwich Arena at the London 2012 Olympic Games (2 August).
Russia's Victoria Komova and Aliya Mustafina won the silver and bronze medals in the event.
Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as "artistic", such as climbing and acrobatics.
The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men's apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women's programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome.

I think that Victoria crying was a little annoying. I totally understand her despair at not getting the gold after she trained so hard. But look at Aly Raisman! She tied with Aliya Mustafina, and still didn't medal in the all around. To me its more heartbreaking to get fourth, being so close, especially in Aly's case actually tieing with her, rather than Victoria getting 2nd. She had amazing routines and had a great olympics over all! No hate, she's a beautiful gymnast but she did awesome still! Appreciate what you can get.

Michelle's World Late reply, but when the judges added all, excluding beam (RIP Beam score) of Raisman's and Mustafina's execution score, Mustafina's was higher, so she got the bronze. Luckily, the tie breaker system is gone. Still sad Aly did not get bronze though... :'(

The thing I like about the Olympics is that while you establish your quality as a gymnast in the competitions leading up to the Olympics and the judges know which gymnasts are the best going in, they only look at the performance you do in the Olympics itself. YOU MUST PERFORM AT THAT MOMENT. If you don't, it doesn't matter how good you were. Gabby just performed better. That is what being a champion is really all about. How do you perform when you have to. There is no sympathy in athletics.

I am truly happy for Gabby, she deserved it. I think Vika was robbed in Tokyo, but not there. Just like Maroney, she didn't performed her best on the day it mattered the most. I really would've like Komova to win, but let's be realistic, Gabby earned her gold that day. The both are amazing and so inspiring! Aliya too, I'm so impressed with her come back, she's a real fighter!

Proved what point? That Komova is a choker and gives up too easily? No I didn't because I cited the fact that she won four out of five possible medals at the YOG in 2010. Your ability to comprehend warrants a standing ovation.

Gabby is way more flexible on beam than Jordyn. Gabby really extends her legs on her walkover and layout step-out. Some of Jordyn's connections were also slow and didn't deserve the connection points. Gabby also gets more height on all her split leaps and is upwright on her full back tuck unlike jordyn who ends with her chest down and attempts to more into another skill. Jordyn also downgraded her beam throughout 2012 while Gabby upgraded.

people who say Gabby hasn't enough flexibility, doesnt get gymnastics!her leaps on beam&floor are great and her execution is one of the best anyway.on every event. great height and extension on every skill.on top of that she has the lightness, it doesnt look laboured at all. if you compare Gabbys to Jordyns skills,Gabby wins easily. Jordyn's gymnastics often look laboured (especially on bars!!). and for Rio, Gabby is also the one who seems to have the freshest body to do it.so take that! =)

The tie breaker is between the difficulty score. difficulty and execution are added up to your score. and Aliya had more difficulty total.

I am sure the Gabby could care less about what you have to say and about you not liking her. Gabby had confidence in herself and I am sure if the judges didn't think she earned it then she wouldn't have won Gold whether you think she deserves it or not. It's very clear you didn't want her to win because she is an American. You can't judge a professional when you know nothing about gymnastics and I am certain they know more than you could ever know. Her hard work paid off, chill out stop hating.

Gabby deserved to win the title at the Olympics. But Viktoria deserved it in 2011. Jordyn Wieber had a messy bars routine a huge hop on the landing on vault. Also she stepped out of bounds on floor and was totally overscored.

Because in Olympic year the IOC doesnt allow FIG to award the same medal to gymnasts who tie so they have tie breaking rules. For the AA they added up the 3 highest apparatus scores. When they did that Aliya came out the winner by like .5

In the all-around competition whenever there is a tie only three best events count for both gymnasts. For both Aly and Aliya the beam rotation was excluded from the count, as they have scored the lowest on that apparatus. Aliya scored a higher cumulative score on the rest of the events and so she won the bronze medal.

Hi, what that judges did is to eliminate Mustafina's and Raisman's lowest scores, so each gymnast had their three best scores, and when they added their three best scores Mustafina had the highest all around score. That is why Aly did not get the bronze...

I think Gabby is the better All Around gymnast, but that's only because she has a competitive bar routine, and if Jordyn was in the final she probably would've gotten bronze over Aliya. Gabby is not better than her on beam or floor, and as for vault they're pretty similar. One competition is not the end all be all, and Gabby has a lot more to prove to me. I'm excited for next years elite season.

Don't assume, because I have been doing gymnastics for over 10 years, and I am 15. I also coach. But I didn't say that Viktoria deserved to win both. She should've won in 2011. But if you think Jordyn was the best that day when Viktoria outscored her on bars by almost two points then give me another explanation why she should've won. Also, it says you live in America on your bloody profile.

I don't really care why the code was changed. Do I agree with keeping her routine the same, especially with her having a injury? No, I don't. I also know that I don't know how Jordyn would react to changing her routines and that stage in the game. There's a reason U.S. gymnast are usually consistent and that's because they make a routine a stick with it all year. There is also no way that anyone thought she would score that high on bars in the Olympics.

That's ridiculous. You can't blame an athlete for winning tie breakers. She didnt make the rules so she didn't steal anything she tied and the RULES rewarded her alone. It's not her fault. She should be proud of her accomplishments. How would you like it if you worked hard at something and won it over another person and then someone comes along and say you 'stole' it. That's just wrong.
