I've had my ribs cracked twice from spinning back kicks. Both times they threw them as counters to me stepping in with punches. Very difficult to do any of these defenses when you are getting countered with this kick.
@jonharker9028
@jonharker9028 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the timing is so tight that a counter-counter is functionally out of the question in those scenarios. In that case, it becomes more a matter of reading tendencies and trying to bait out the attacks you expect, which is more on the psychological side to a fight. For example, if you fake the advance with distracting jabs or cut an angle immediately (instead of closing in one straight line), they’re kicking when and where you want them to kick [ie. *not* into your ribs right as you’re about to throw a punch combo]. Knowing and being able to read the right cues takes good tips (like seeing that heel pivot) and truckloads of experience, maybe even dedicated drilling. Sometimes it really is as simple [but not easy] as fundamentals, like footwork and the geometry of range/timing. With Shane’s teep to the butt/hip/thigh, you use a straight line to defeat a circle. With Gabe’s angle cut, especially for the back kick, you use a circle (well, triangle?) to defeat a straight line. Hope those mind-game tips can help with countering the counterattacks!

Other options: - since the spinning side kick requires the opponent's lead leg to stay grounded, you can step off angle and get a hard rear roundhouse kick to their lead leg while the spinning side kick misses - step off angle and catch the spinning side kick like how Icymike did, then transition the grip under your armpit, get a keylock grip around their shin, and twist over into a very powerful ankle lock As much as I love the spinning back/side kick, briefly losing sight of your target, turning your back, and sticking a limb out all at the same time has some dangerously exploitable weaknesses

These are all great! The cross-check I'm gonna have to try more. For regular non-spinning side kicks, I find most of the same things work if you bait the kick. A big thing that helped me for non-side kicks is never to be in the open stance. If you have to be open stance, a Thai hop is about all you can do. If I can bait the kick, something else that works on others and has worked on me is to drop an elbow on their ankle. Hurts even when done lightly.

When I started Muay That in 1991 we were the first Muay Thai gym in my city. We got a lot of interest and challenges from existing schools that wanted to see what MT was all about. My instructor taught us that kicks are either going to come straight for us (teep) or around (roundhouse). We used the same defence for all straight kicks and another defence for all round kicks. Worked pretty well against lots of TKD and karate guys. Based on 1990s Muay Thai training I would take a half step back, catch with the front hand and kick the standing leg out.

I like to use the arm on the same side (i.e. my right arm if opponent throws the right leg, the inverse of ed stahl's) to sweep the attacking leg outwards (i.e. from inside to outside). the momentum lets me step off the centre line (so basically the same position that sensei seth takes) to counterattack.

I actually like to try and land spinning side kicks. Since I know that they take long, I never initiate one when my opponent has the time and the dynamics on his side. If "step behind back" or "teep him in his ass" defense worked, it means I chose the timing for my kick terribly wrong. Those defenses should not normally work. Using the lead hand to block or swipe the kick is a huge risk. The same spinning kick can be a mid- or high- side kick, or a spinning hook kick, there's 3 directions to defend, and committing the hand to any one of them is an open invitation.
