I got a warm glow when I realised I do the same thing using a single piece of tape to wrap several wires. I also had Naked Gun on VCD, I had a massive nerd-on for Video-CD as a kid. I was similarly annoyed by it's weaknesses but sometimes you got an absolutely superb transfer. Star Trek 6 was a great example.

I had the RealMagic Hollywood+ MPEG2 DVD decoder card from Sigma Designs when I got my first DVD drive. It was a massive improvement over software decoders at the time, which required a top of the line PC and still had terrible TV out quality.

Another Nintendo-related CD-i title people seem to forget is Tetris. At the time, Nintendo had exclusive non-PC rights, so it was undoubtedly part of the deal that brought Zelda and Mario to CD-i.

GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods Yeah. Main problem with CD-i Tetris is that it stops gameplay every time you level up but it was pretty chill. Defenders of the Crown is another that was well-suited to the format. Should have been a lot more Myst-like adventure games since it was well suited to those.

when welding plastics, you can actually use strands of wire to strengthen the bond between both plastic pieces. Heat the wire onto the plastic, push it in, and use the heat to encapsulate the strands inside the plastic. It's less likely to break at the weakest point (the crack itself) again after this :D

I would like to add a word regarding patching holes, repairing hinges and so on. My personal favourite is Oyumaru in clear colour - it is at ebay in best price and epoxy putty - Milliput. About both of them is lots of vids. Disadvantage might be colour of epoxy putty, but it might be spray painted or even some sort of colourant might be added. tough places might be filled with toothpick. I think that is most promising solution from all which I ever saw. When I was a kid I spent my free time with model-making lessons. I got Ouymaru and Milliput to repair broken hinges in my psone. Epoxy putty might be treated by a file. Blue Stuff is a bit more expensive than Ouymaru is but both of them seems to be very similar if not very same solution. Worth to try - on some junk at first. Screw posts might be repaired too. You need to wrap around the screw using Teflon (PTFE) tape, and then add epoxy putty to the hole and insert screw in there. Wait for cure and we have got screw post alive back again;)

Interesting how they went for a linear PSU instead of a SMPS, which is probably a good thing! Their VCRs of the same era (with similar styling) had switched-mode power supplies packed with light blue Philips caps that always seemed to leak. They always seemed to favour those round 'Wickman' type fuses that liked to pop for absolutely no reason whatsoever, so if your VFD ever dies I'd immediately suspect one of those. The connectors with the clips I've seen before in their TVs and VCRs so the innards look quite familiar.

I loved 7th Guest, I was about 13 when it came out. I liked the puzzels but had no idea what was going on in the actial game, something about a murder years ago and a reporter. It was one of the first CDROM games too. I also had Creature Shock. Amazing that games like that can be rended real time without even bothering the system and would the quality of graphics would be classed as comically bad. On the joypad I would have suspected the internal end of the cable first, just on the basis if it is, you have an invisible repair, if its not, you've touble checked. I'll try catch you on the stream tonight and as the question "why are you obsessesed in poking 2 fingers into every slot you see?" 51:38. And its friction not kinetic energy. I'd never thought I'd see the day I'd correct you on something ;) Good work.

There is a program you can get for the pc, although I forget what it’s called that allows you to access and copy of the mpg file of these cd-I discs, if you just put them in a pc they almost always crash the OS! I think it was a programme that helps you recover files from a damaged cd as it accesses the raw data in a different way to the OS.

LaserDisc, LaserVision, Disc-o-vision, VLP, are all the same thing. I think you mean CD Video (not to be confused with Video CD), which was yet *another* version of LaserDisc but at least digital audio was no longer optional. CDV was LD with gold colored discs and standard digital audio. Not all of the earlier LD players supported digital audio and CD playback but all CDV players did.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 6 жыл бұрын
Strictly speaking, they aren't exactly the same thing! I had a VLP player that was from the late 70's - that played Laser Vision, that was Philips early road map for Laser Disc, but you couldn't play Laser Disc on a Laser Vision player. But there was CD Video - used a lot in jukeboxes if memory serves. But Laser Vision isn't really Laser Disc, it's more a case of Laser Disc took the LV format and improved it with digital encoding.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 6 жыл бұрын
GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods This confusion is why LaserDisc was never a success. :) LaserVision is the format name where LaserDisc was originally a brand name owned by Pioneer for the same format. They used LD on their players and the discs they published while their industry partners with compatible players had to use LV. Users played LaserVision discs on LaserDisc or LaserVision players but discs published by Pioneer might also say LaserDisc on them. If your player was, say, a Panasonic then it would also say “LaserVision” instead of LaserDisc. That changed in the early ‘90s when Pioneer opened up the LaserDisc name to the rest of the industry. In 1984 they added digital soundtracks for compatible players but it was often at the expense of compatibility with earlier players. You often had a choice between DTS, digital, and standard releases for a given title. For the European market they basically re-launched the format as CD Video where all CD Video discs and players supported digital audio and had gold-colored discs, but they were 100% compatible with digital audio LD/LV players (and vice versa). LaserDisc/LaserVision users were left dealing with discs that only worked on some players and not others, but solving that for European releases obviously didn’t save the format. There were also various releases for picture format (Academy, letterboxed wide, and anamorphic wide). Then we have CLV vs CAV discs... It was a real mess! I live in the region where they test-marketed it back in the ‘70s so I’ve seen more Disc-o-Vision discs than most. :)

Had my CD-i player for nearly 20 years now and the door in front of the CD tray never closed properly. It looks like it’s supposed to lift when the tray retracts but spring is too weak. It hasn’t been connected in a few years but the save battery still worked last time. I’ve been putting off dealing with both for far too long and I was already planning to make a video of it but now I’ll look like a copy-cat. :) Seeing Dragon’s Lair really makes me want an MPEG decoder for mine. Heck, I even have a couple CD-i moves but I’ve played those in VCD and DVD players (they work when you browse to the MPEG file). I recall watching one title (whatever it was) on my hacked XBOX and watching the other title (Silence of the Lambs) even earlier on my N64 (via Bung Doctor V64). Yeah, I don’t see why they weren’t just part of the VCD spec.

As far as I know you don't need a CRT tv to play Mad Dog or any other gun shooting games on the cdi. You setup the receiver that comes with the peacekeeper and you can shoot away.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 5 жыл бұрын
Light guns use the vblank and hblank to determine the position on screen, a modern LCD or Plasma cannot re-create that as it tends to draw the image a frame at a time or in 3 sections etc. I would be suprised if any old lightgun like that works on a a modern TV even with a receiver.

I recently got a CDi (exactly the same model as in the video) and it's working I have followed your advice thank you for the videos. I do still have an issue with the drive tho it seems there's something not fitting quite right in it as it keeps squeaking as it's reading the discs, which it can play however I do get errors like "your disc may be dirty" or the game just outright does not load. I have only really tried it out with one game so far, a burned copy of Zak van Sam which I played to completion, it's an FMV game so it has to access the disc all the time. It didn't seem to be an issue with the disc being dirty as it would crash at various different points, so it wasn't like a specific clip each time rather ransom spots. Could it have something to do with me maybe lifting the spindle a bit too high? I fear it might be the case as the plastic bit that presses the disc seems to rub against the frame it resides in...
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 3 жыл бұрын
It does sound like the disc maybe rubbing on something! Inspect the inside of the drive carefully (perhaps with the disc in) to see if you can work out where the squeeking noise is coming from.

CDi was never a gaming system, it was a multimedia system even bringing the internet to the livingroom. I really love watching old 4:3 movies on cdi, way better than vhs and 99% of the dvd releases of old movies are trash. Being dutch there is probably some national pride in me saying this but Philips again was a real frontrunner on tech. But as usual, too early, too inovative, really creating a market instead of supplying a market.....
@jasejj
@jasejj 6 жыл бұрын
Philips were always innovators but their products often seemed unfinished, with too many bugs, experimental design decisions that didn't work or just plain iffy build quality (and I speak as someone who bought Philips in preference to Sony for a long time); in their rush to be first to market they didn't apply the last 10% of polish to make their products world-class. The Japanese then refined the ideas and wiped the floor with Philips, unfortunately.
