The square hosts Milan's new Skyline as well as iconic buildings like The Unicredit Tower and the Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest). Some of the best looking skyscrapers of the city are right next to each other in this hot spot. One is the world famous Bosco Verticale by Stefano Boeri Architetti (Vertical Forest) winner of several prizes, including making the TOP50 list of the most iconic buildings of the last 50 years.
Officially opened in 2014, almost five years later these residential high-rises seem to be almost disappearing under all that green, and continue to be a testament to sustainable urban living.
The towers were designed as part of a massive redevelopment of the new Porta Nuova district in Milan. Soaring up 116m and 85m high, they are famed for featuring 700 trees and over 20,000 different shrubs and plants.
This model is being developed across the world. In Paris, Boeri plans to build a 54m tower, Forêt Blanche, which will incorporate a hectare of woodland. While in China his firm is working on a Forest City in Lishui that will feature 40,000 trees and a million plants. Urban Forestry may well be the future of cities.
The area is the Porta Nuova District and it is quickly developing.
This urban area is a fusion of tradition and modernity, a melange of history and of innovation. On the one hand there is the Isola district - which conserves its own independent identity - and on the other the newly redeveloped Porta Nuova district that has changed the face of a large portion of Milan, fostering new connections between places that were previously completely separated. And then there is Porta Garibaldi with its buzzing nightlife and Cimitero Monumentale, Milan’s open-air museum.
The UniCredit Tower (Torre UniCredit) is a skyscraper in Milan, Italy. At 231 metres (758 ft), it is the tallest building in Italy. In 2009, the estimated labour cost was about €2.1 billion (US$3.15 billion), and in 2015 the infrastructure cost €2.7 billion (US$4.05 billion), a total of €4.8 billion (US$7.2 billion).
The building was designed by architect César Pelli and reached its full height on 15 October 2011 when the spire was attached. The building is the headquarters of UniCredit, Italy's largest bank by assets, and is part of a larger development of new residential and business structures in Milan's Porta Nuova district, near Porta Garibaldi railway station. The tower ranked eighth in the Emporis 2012, that rewards skyscrapers for excellence in their aesthetic and functional design.
The famous spire is entirely covered with LED, the spire in addition to having a constant night lighting, can take on different colors depending on the recurrence: during the Christmas season of 2013 was lit green to represent a Christmas tree or on the night between 14 and 15 June 2014 was illuminated in red to celebrate the 150 years of Italian Red Cross. One of the usual combinations is Italian flag. Also on the evening of November 14, 2015, the spire was illuminated with the colors of the French flag in recognition of the victims of the attack at Stade de France and at the Bataclan theatre in Paris, which occurred the night before. On June 13, 2016 it was illuminated with the colors of the rainbow flag to recognize the 49 victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting in Florida.
