Andrew, I've lurked for a while, and as a result of watching your videos, last week I bit the bullet and bought a Kupo 546 Boom stand. For many years I have asked gaffers what nets did, but not until this point with this video, do I feel I truly understand their utility. This was brilliant teaching, and you are a brilliant teacher. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, you are a pillar of goodness in an otherwise torrent of garbage. I'm in Sydney, so if you ever come this way there's a free couple of beers on offer for you 👍🏻

Don’t know if it’s the same down under, but here in the US we call a full set of nets/silks a “sandwich” since the frame color of the nets/silks are like the items in a sandwich (yellow for the cheese, green for the lettuce, red for the ketchup, etc). So if the gaffer on set says “get me a sandwich” they probably mean a full set of nets and silks like this. Great video Andrew, keep up the good work!

This is unreal! So clearly explains the differences. One question though: I don't quite understand when you mention you might use the silk when you can't get a blade frame in to position. Are you saying you can get an open end net into tighter spaces that a solid frame of the same size? Or Is this saying that you don't necessarily need to get the open end silk in to the perftct spot because you won't get a hard edged shadow anyway?
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 2 жыл бұрын
My bad! I can't get a 4X4 or 3X3 into position. These are small enough and light enough that I can manoeuver them over and between things on a boom

I never used net before. I understand how it works. But how net is compared to gels? Gels also could be natural and reduce light very good. Also we can use white diffusion fabric that reduce half or one ore two stops of light. I'm asking cause gels and diffusion fabric are more popular and could be found in many places.
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 2 жыл бұрын
Net are more if you don't want to diffuse and keep the beam shapes and shadows. ND can work, especially with soft boxes, and using it taped to C-Stand arms is what I did before I could afford a nets kit. A cheap alternative to net, that you can get at any hardware store is fly screen

I’ve never seen those 2x stop nets here in NYC and we rarely see white nets… you have to Special order. we do have lavender nets which are lighter than a single net. Might have to pick up a few white nets… my main vendor here doesn’t even make them have to order out of LA.

If I can fit them in the van, Skypanel replacement is what I am thinking.
@MomentMediaSW
@MomentMediaSW 2 жыл бұрын
@@gaffergear That's what i figured. As i understood it, they're a bit smaller than the Skypanels. But that depends on cases. But you don't use the cases in your van either right?
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 2 жыл бұрын
@@MomentMediaSW problem for me is the skypanels pack super compact because I use them with the ball mounts. These only have a stirrup so they don't pack as small and won't fit on the same shelf

With the nets folding at the open ends like you mentioned- whats a remedy for this? Im curious if theres potentailly a small folded plastic or cardboard we could use to clip on so they wouldnt bend over. Also, are there other options for a case that prevents this? Are the open ends possible to iron on low heat if they do bend and get stuck therefore causing shadows when using them?

Is a net the same thing as a scrim?
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 2 жыл бұрын
In Australia sort of yes! A scrim is a metal version, usually in a ring shape to be dropped into the accessory slot behind barn doors. Some colour codes, green for 1/2 stop, red for full stop. The term scrim seems to have different meanings around the world, but for me a scrim reduces light without diffusing.
