My favorite part about your tutorials is that you show the basic controls and combos in starter gear, and then when you show them off in game you have crazy looking weapons and armor. It always gives me a "this could be you" feeling, and I find it exciting

One thing I'd like to add which is life-saving and very usefull when in sword-mode; if your gauge is about to empty after the next attack, do the sweeping move with A and press R afterwards. Instead of standing still, not being able to move or evade, you morph back to axe-mode so you can do anything else you would normally be able to do after an attack =]

Here's a tip about Switch Axe and about every other weapon that takes a long time to sheathe. If you are on top of a ledge and you have your weapon out, walk up to the edge and right before you fall, press Y. Frame-perfect timing allows you to INSTANTLY put away any weapon and it's a technique well worth getting down.

I agree with GaijinHunter, I don't agree with the idea thay Sword Mode is the "ultimate" mode of this weapon, I consider it more as a feature of the weapon, if one prefer morphing weapon with vastly superior damage dealing purpose in one of it's form, maybe Charge Blade is there for them. I switch modes not because one is completely superior over other, but because it suits the situation better, for example: When it comes to a downed monsters with exposed soft part, Axe mode is good for rapid swinging followed with the cyclone finisher (the DPS is outrageous) but when it comes to allocate damage to hard-yet-breakabke part, I seek chances to switch to sword mode and rapidly attackn undispited while avoiding damage with the weapon's superb evasion. Or when you want to keep healthy distance from the monster, Axe mode is the choice, but when oppurtunity arises to break a body part with extremely narrow hit zone (Like Gravios Belly) then elemental burst of sword mode is the choice. There are people who say that this weapon is overshadowed by CB, I'd say its not true. If you say its because it doesn't morph as fluidly, know that SA's two form is not as dependent on each other's as CB's. If you say CB's blocking makes it superior, remember the only meele weapon that can regularly side-step and roll forward. If you say CB's phial is vastly superior, remember that SA's is auxilary and fills up by itself. If you say CB's hits hard, remember that SA hits fast and precise. Each weapon class was designed to have edges over the other, it all falls to the hunter to use which for the better. A good SA user knows how to use each form of the weapon, a better one knows when to. Peace, no means to offend anyone.
@Hambs23
@Hambs23 5 жыл бұрын
4 years too late, but yes, I completely agree. I would also add that Axe mode is also good for keeping distance, because not only it has a lot of reach, but the attacks don't move you much, or at all (except for the "Super Spin" after the infinite combo). And I think people tend to overlook phials other than Power Phials. Exhaust Phials are good not only to help your fellow Hammer or Hunting Horn user (though I wish any of my friends used HH, instead of me keeping tabs on SA and HH) stunning a monster but also for the exhaust part of it, making the monster need to catch some breath more frequently. Other status phials are the same, better when combined with another weapon with the same satus effect. Elemental Phials are more situational and I treat them as I would treat a SnS, use the right element for the current monster. I remember me and my friend being stuck on the Urgent HR3 quest, Gore Magala, so we spent the whole afternoon crafting and upgrading some Fire Weapons, and I made a Pecospander, which had really high Fire damage and used Elemental Phial. That, combined with a Fire +1 from the Rathian set made the fight against G. Magala much, much easier. And I know it was from this SA alone, because my friend that was using a Bow, didn't knew about Critical Distance, Coats and Charge Shots at the time, so he kept shooting uncoated, uncharged shots with reduced damage, occasionaly using the iron balls, so yeah. Dragon Phials are probably the worst Phials by themselves, but you need to consider which weapons have it. And in MH4U, if the wiki list is correct, there are only 4 weapons that have it, and they only serve to compliment the already good weapon: Rough Edge starts with 2 slots and can be upgraded once for 3, and on max upgrade it has almost the same stats as a fully upgraded Kirin SA but with more slots (and this is a "mineral" SA, not an Elder Dragon one like Kirin's). Tyrannos (Deviljho's SA) has one of the best attack stat in the game. Akantor SA has even more than Tyrannos, starts with 20% affinity and goes to 40% with a single upgrade. And the other is Worn Switch Axe, and as it is a "Worn" weapon, there's no reason to use it before upgrading to it's "original" form. And this one in particular looks bloody amazing: It's a Goddamn Chainsaw, and while it lacks physical attack, it has a massive Dragon element + Elemental Phial. So the Dragon Phial on Worn Axe really is just to foreshadow what it'll become. In general, Power Phials are only good if you're looking for low effort raw damage. But when used correctly, the other Phials are just as useful, if not more than Power Phial, like my case with Gore Magala.

After using a swaxe for all of low and high rank I came back here to see if there was anything new I could pick up, but I actually noticed you didn't mention the get up from a ledge attacks. If you press x right when you climb up from a ledge (mash x during the get up on top of the ledge animation and you'll get it) you'll draw with a low spinning horizontal chop (not the same as the normal side chop draw), and you can even draw into sword mode with this by pressing r+x+a instead of just x. These also work going up small ledges that you don't need to sheath to climb.

One thing I learned a couple days ago is when you're in Sword Mode and you're jumping off a ledge for an aerial attack, pressing X+A in midair will actually start up the motion for the finisher. You'll do the thrust, but no charge, as that will start happening when you hit the ground and keep hammering the X button. I've yet to see if the intro to the finisher can actually topple the monster or if you can actually do the phial burst in midair, but it's worth looking into.

This weapons is really good, in 3U I soloed all the quest even G-rank with it and the armor sets and gems I got were really good you would want to use Dire Miralis armor ( gem up with charm for evade+2 and attack to +3) and Nether armor for switch axes with poor sharpness and I had a wonderful evade dist charm which also had +10 critical eye) I don't know if in 4U there's something near as good as that together but in 3U I tested every weapon against the same monsters and switch axe did the best times with only the long sword coming close to it or on few intances surpassing it.

i've really taken a liking to this thing after switching from the charge blade. pro-tip to anyone using SA. the axe is actually better than the sword in most cases. the back and forth one handed swing makes it amazing. it lasts as long as you have stamina, but if you drink a mega dash potion you stop losing stamina so you can actually use this for unlimited dps.

Wow after rather recently deciding to main the switch axe out of the blue I honestly did not know a bunch of these things. Like the two finishers. I knew how you could swing the axe as long as you have stamina, but not that you could do a finisher afterwards. The sword file I used to attempt that but I never understood how to make the explosion bit. So thanks a bunch for all of the cool tips. Can't wait to try them out.

[~Scrub Alert~] A friend of mine is trying to get me into Monster Hunter, and suggested I tried the demo. I've only fought that Jaggi twice as of the time of this posting, but the first time, I used the hammer and didn't much care for it. This weapon I enjoyed, being a complete scrub to this game's gameplay and all. I don't understand all the mechanics yet, nor do I understand how you got such versatility out of the weapon while I swear I've done the same things and only gotten the standard combos... and from my meager experience, that A button felt so useless. But this might improve my odds later (might have to write crib notes). From the two little hunts I've done on the demo so far, I can't say I love this, but it does remind me strongly of PSO, and that's a step in the right direction in my book. So I ask, for as long as this is pertinent, what weapons would you pros recommend to a newbie to the series? Currently, based on friends' descriptions, I have my eyes on the following weapons: Switch Axe, Bow, both Bowguns, Gun Lance and Lance, the bagpipe thing, and the sword/shield combo. I prefer slightly faster weapons over bulky heavy slow things (within reason, that hammer was terrible from my scrub POV), and I have no qualms playing support/backup. I'm gonna try the demo for a little while longer before I decide on the full game or not. I wanna make sure I'm not gonna regret sinking $40 into a game I'm not all that into due to lack of research. I already made that mistake with Final Fantasy 13 (how that series has fallen).
@Adrian.Christ

I wouldn't recommend using any of the ranged weapons to a new player. They require a decent amount of prior game knowledge to use properly from the start of the game. I would just use whichever melee weapon you think is the most fun to use. MH is incredibly balanced, so don't worry about being gimped later on for learning a "bad weapon". Also, you don't have to commit to just one weapon, you'll have plenty of opportunities throughout the game to make all kinds of weapons.

I have a 4 man team that consists of 2 noobish dudes. One hasn't played since the original mh, and the other hasn't played any at all. These two focus solely on one weapon and I think its detrimental to their gameplay exp. If I have any advice i'd say grab sns or lance, these two are fairly simple and survivable and let you learn monster habits and attack patterns. But don't be scared of making another weapon type, they all operate differently and play different roles. If you do chose a gunner type just remember that you will have to make a separate set to use it, making farming armor take longer and be more expensive. And don't forget armor skills and upgrading when raising hr. Skills > looking cool > physical defence

Props for the PSO call back. I felt the same thing when I played the demo. I'd agree to stay away from Ranged weapons as they are more resource intensive. But as for "what to play" try out every weapon in the demo. And I mean that. I went with what I got a kill fastest with... The Charge Blade, quickly followed by the Great Sword. You may like the Dual Blades and Sword and Shield more, or even the Insect Glaive if you prefer high speed. Outside of Ranged, there's only really one "support" weapon... The Hunting Horn. And that is not really a beginner weapon.

So far I have tried the Hammer, Switch Axe, Bow, and Dual Daggers. And so far, the only one I didn't really like was the Hammer. I think the Switch Axe and Bow are probably favorites, but the Dual Daggers aren't terrible by any means. That flurry o' blows was pretty neat. (the X+A simultaneously one) I was told by a friend and fan of the series that I shouldn't consider using them as they get dull pretty quick, just one flurry o' blows dulls them to the point of uselessness, or some such.
@sabata2
@sabata2 9 жыл бұрын
SolstaceWinters Dual Blades do burn through Sharpness fast. And sharpness 1) indicates whether your weapons will bounce (only really happens against Tetsucabra in the demo) and 2) is a multiplier for your damage. At Yellow it is 100%. Green, blue, white, and purple are positive multipliers. Orange and Red (the sword below your HP looks chipped) are major negative modifiers. If you want to use them you will *need* to make an armor that has "Razor Sharp" (10 points of Sharpness, total), and likely either Speed Sharpener and/or Sharpness +1.

Hey GH, you forgot to mention that you can switch and do the elemental thrust during a jump as well. It can be useful if you are in the "wrong" mode for your phial type (like how you maybe want to do the higher MV axe slash on a poison phial swaxe but the boosted raw/element sword attack on a power/element phial swaxe) or just wish to easily change the mode. R does a midair switch + attack and XA starts the elemental discharge midair. It even includes a switch to sword if you use it from axe mode.

So, after trying the old MH3U combo for instant switching between Axe and Sword and Axe (in Axe mode, forward + X, then R, followed by side + A, then R, stabs with the Axe, does a morph slash with the Sword, does a side slash, then does a morph slash with the Axe, and can be repeated - and it doesn't work in 4U), I discovered that you can do a morph attack from the backstep swipe. In Sword, hit A, then hit R. You'll swipe, backstep, switch to Axe, then step in and swing it. Useful to get out of range temporarily. Also, I didn't know that the draw to sword was X+A+R now. It used to be X+R. No wonder I haven't been able to pull it off recently...

I have to admit that this video helped me quite a bit. I've mained the Switch Axe in Tri and 3U, and thought coming into MH4 I knew relatively everything to the axe until seeing this video. After seeing this, I've actually incorporated a good bit, like using the stamina-using swings of axe mode a bit more (something I never really done in Tri/3U), especially now that there's the finisher swing with using R and using it to switch in to Sword Mode. I look back and wonder why couldn't have that finisher be put there sooner!? That one move in particular made a hefty amount of difference. I find that apart from the evasion skills useful, I also find Razor Sharp/Speed Sharpening super useful on the axe. Granted it doesn't burn through sharpness as fast as Dual Blades or a Long Sword, I wouldn't think, but with as much aggression that one needs to have with an axe, I find that it is actually the next thing to mandatory like Evasion is.

Eh, truth be told, I personally out of habit refer to them interchangably, especially when I talk about it to friends. I know they're not COMPLETELY the same game since 4 Ultimate has a few other bells and whistles and that 4 (vanilla) only came out in Japan. I probably should break out of that bad habit. Excuse me Gaijin, I'm no expert and maybe this move has been removed since MH3 but I remember one more "possibility" to unleash the burst. It was very alike to the one hit at 6:09 (the second one of the double strike). You were slashing around with the sword mode, and when the weapon was at your side (almost backward), pressing the burst button ( it was the - on the wiimote) permitted, with a little bit of delay since the weapon was backward, to thrust it and burst. And since I always found the way the hunter thrusted the weapon all the way inside the monster kinda cool, I hope it is still there :3

I dislike how they changed the combo for the SA's Sword mode in Gen, so its back to that of 3U's. It made since to me in 4U to just mash X to do a combo that could go on until your gauge had run out, where as I had to separately press X then A to do the Up-Down combo, but I guess that's just me. I wish there some way to change the button layouts, that would be cool.

You know, it came to me that Switch Axe's ancillary factor (say, the mechanics unique to the weapon class, such as spirit bar and shellings which in SA's case is the phial) is in some way pretty peculiar, compared to the others... It is able to refill itself without the necessity of any active action out of seemingly unlimited source, yet its usage causes no exclusive drawbacks on the weapon. Most "ancillary factor" require several succesful feats to be available for use like stealing juices from monsters, arranging notes or filling up a gauge with succesive strikes, while Gunlances being a class that requires no such innitiative recieve sharpness reduction for uses of the shellings. However, since the phial grants no modification on the movesets and relatively minimum augmentation (compared to other classes's ancillaries) beside the effects of the already singularly granted phial of each SA, I believe it is well balanced. Its just that, its very peculiar for me that it requires minnimum effort and costs equally minnimum...

I love Axe mode more than Sword mode. Mobility, range, attack's visual... you name it, anything but dps. IMO while axe motion value wise is higher per hit, sword's dps is so much better even double slash (28+36) is stronger then axe's finisher (57). In MHX demo, the axe's finisher deals 2 hits now, if motion value stay the same then finally I can enjoy my axe instead button smashing in sword mode.

Gaijin hunter, I'd like to tell you that sword mode does not get awaken, it takes on the phial of the axe. This is best demonstrated with the Daren mohran SA, it has hidden water but has a power phial. The majority of other switch axes or slash axes have been conveniently been placed with either their hidden element or status or dragon phial that is not present in axe mode. Hopefully this helps in spreading knowledge. The phial affects the sword mode because the meter in the top left is a phial meter

Mohow Meaning that its super OP, with evade +1 +2 +3 (depending on the weapon) you are invincible for the whole thing so you can evade through roars, big attacks, anything with the right timing.
@AiMaTay
@AiMaTay 9 жыл бұрын
Rogue Cheney I don't think it's OP. For weapons that's can't block, how else are they supposed to avoid damage? Plus, one has to be pretty skilled to avoid taking damage, as it's a very short time that you are invincible, even with Evade +.
@lordgrin4917

Mohow You can still dodge with out it, but the evade 1-3 make you take no damage you can dodge straight into a huge attack nthats what makes it broken.

For so long i put off using the SA due to other people constantly tripping me as well as a friend who uses it, few bad apples made me avoid it for ages. Then i seen that one SA user who is just... *touches face*, that SA user made me curious, so i watched this video, made myself a SA and now i have a new favorite weapon and a new collection to create C: Don't let other players put you off trying the other weapons, use what you want.

I was watching your video hoping to learn some cool new combos for the SA but I feel like you are wrong about how the A button attack works, at least in sword mode. In sword mode pressing the A button actually makes the SA repeat the move 2 moves previous. So if you X-X-X to the double slice then press A you will do the 2nd X attack in the combo and the next X will be the Double Slice. So I find myself using the combo X-X-X-A-X-A-X for repeat double slice, more so than just X-X-A-X-A as the double slice I feel has more potential damage. If I'm wrong please let me know. EDIT: Nvm, I see where I misread something in your video. Please ignore me lol

Funny thing is I started with Monster Hunter 3u and sucked with every weapon except with the SA ^^ I picked it up and I fell in Love with it. The funniest thing about it though is the thing, that I only seem to be capable of using Morph Weapons and after some Training the Hunting Horn. Great Tutorial especially for beginners ^^ On that Note though. The Numbers you've shown while showing of the Weapons moves, what were they exactly?? For example the 80 on the Phial Burst? Does that mean the Phial burst does 80% of my raw damage +- the other million things that fall into account??

Wait - I am confused. If you have an element phial SA, then moving to Sword mode nets you Mind's eye and that element phial being applied, right? But you say Sword mode allows 'awakening' and mind's eye and that's not true right? Its just the phial being used.
@decus478
@decus478 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think when he made that comment he was thinking of, say, the dragon phials specifically. All of the stuff with elemental phial already has an element, but dragon needs awakening to access it in axe mode and at least 'seems' to gain it in sword mode even though it's really just the nature of the phial. If you use something that needs awakening to gain an element and its phial is, say, power it will not also gain the element in sword mode. I don't know if there are elemental phials that need awakening to access the element in axe mode this time around, but I imagine they'd work like the dragon (and poison) phials did.
@Dw7freak
@Dw7freak 9 жыл бұрын
Elemental vials increase elemental damage in sword form while power vials increase raw damage in sword form. And in sword form they get Mind's Eye, no bounce but still has reduced damage if sharpness isn't high enough, and Awaken, meaning you don't have to get armor points for the hidden elemental damage unless you want it on the ax form too.
@Sharkster_J

Elemental phials increase the elemental (or status) damage of the weapon whenever it is in sword mode. All switch axes gain minds eye (no bounce) while in sword mode.

Most SA's have an element that isn't awakened. If you have Awakening on your armor you can get the benefits of it in Axe mode but you automatically get your elemental attacks in Sword mode without having to properly gear for Free Element.

After using the SA in 4U I generally prefer to combo into sword mode. Back in 3U I used to never use the sword because I was slow to move and get close before the monster in the demo charged after me. The reason I still used the SA today was because it was the first and seemingly only weapon that I could kill a monster. Now I am killing things with great succession.

So at 3:57 you said switchaxe has a natural awaken, meaning a natural free element, in sword mode. So would that mean my Barbarian outcast( jaggi switchaxe ) would get the greyed out 550 poison? Or would I still need free element. (Meaning free element does nothing to sword mode)

I didn't use this weapon a lot, but I used it every once in a while in 3u and I can say that I vastly preferred axe mode to sword mode. Because I love axes. And sword mode just felt meh to me. Just didn't feel right. I used it to apply status and then went back to axe. I might make a couple of SA's to play around with in 4u so if you see an idiot almost exclusively using axe mode(not "properly" using the weapon), it might be me. Or it might just be another person who just really loves oversized axes. My friend drew a portrait of me for a gift and she gave me a massive axeXD did I mention I like axes? Plus if you have an axe, you can always "axe enemies for their final words." get it? Best before you bring down the axe. They won't be very chatty afterward. SorryXD

So if a SA has a "sleeping" element (when the elemental attack appears in grey in the weapon stats), does it mean that even if you don't have the "awaken" ability in your set, in Sword mode it will get it?
