Thanks for talking about this. Seems like an after thought on youtube, as most overdrive/boost/distortion demos, the amp is never is never cranked. For me no pedal compares to the sound of my 65' fender head's breakup at high volume so I try to find pedals that will compliment that tone. I cringe at these KZfaq vids that are scared of turning the amp up, therefore producing a kind of fizz that does no justice to the pedal or amp.

Thanks Dylan. I can use the overdrive on my Blackstar Fly 3 properly now. I turn the volume on my guitar to full, turn up the gain on my mini amp and i get overdrive at a low volume setting on the amp!

Thanks for this video, sir! I have been playing around with pre and power amps lately for the first time in my guitar playing. Your video made me understand that once you do something with the pre amp you can't go back and change it on the way forward of the signal flow! Good information to know! Edit: btw I subscribed.

Hi Dylan, great explanation of such an important concept! Thank you so much for sharing! I myself have been trying experimenting with tuning the pre-amp and power-amp saturation with my class-A THD Univalve which supports many pre/power tube combinations. I would love to hear your take on how to achieve (in a class-A amp with just one volume knob) the sweet spot of driving the power-amp section to its breaking point while keeping the pre-amp section clean so as to allow for dynamic range and pedals. So far the closest results I'm getting is by replacing the usual 12AX7 pre-amp tubes with lower gain ones (a combo of 12AU7 and 12AY7). Thanks a lot and keep up the stellar work!

I don't own an electric guitar but I am trying to use the stuff you mentioned in this video to connect my AV receiver to another (old) AV receiver to use the second one as an amplifier. We'll see how it goes.

I get my best (clean tone) on my twin from running the master at 10 and the preamp at 2-3. Clean until I boost it...and still not that dirty, which I like. I like to play funk so I want super clean with the guitar volume almost on 10, under 8 and it gets to muddy for funk (even with the treble bleed.) I have 2 drive pedals and a clean boost on my pedal board...

I have a Marshall with a gain, volume, and master volume controls. I think I understand the gain setting - that's affecting the signal prior to going into the pre-amp. My question is what's the difference between the volume and the master volume in such a signal chain? Is it a case of setting the master volume to the desired level of overdrive on the power tubes and then using the volume to adjust the loudness to the desired level?

Another good one! Anyone know if the volume of the guitar output makes any difference really to this stuff? Like if guitar volume knob is at like 4/10 with the pre amp and amp right at the sweet spot, does it push it out of that sweet spot and into distorted/clipping range? This seems like a stupid question now that I look at it. Like, obviously the answer is Yes, right? Like, turning up the guitar volume knob is similar in effect to aggressively digging in with the pick-hand, correct? Again, thnx yo. Okay he answered my question as I finished it at 6:00 lol.

Isnt it the A and not the V voltage that you increase with the volume, gain etc?

So am I understanding that I've gain is more important for guitars and vocals? So for vocal can I just set my gain to one place and work with volume only?

My eq pedal hits the front end from what I understand but I'm able to clean up with my amp cranked into breakup. Even in conjunction with a drive pedal, but I'm also staying away from the drive knob and just pushing level with more signal. So pushing the signal alone on the preamp with guitar on 7 gives room like you described. Is it the clipping that comes from the drive knob that squishes dynamic range?

So when I set up my DMM to one of the outputs of the amp and played a 50 HZ test tone the voltage started dropping a little bit before halfway. The output of my headunit is 0.8v special sub output signal and my amp has low level input (gain) range from 0.2v-6v. should I set this so that the gain knob is right before peak so as to not reach clipping?

Ahh, sorry but gotta question ... as soon as you mention going to 7 volume... sure we're cleaning up our tone.. but now our volume is down and we disapear in the mix! How do you sort've tweak your tone in this way by cleaning things up, without losing yourself in the mix? I'm cruising through these videos so maybe you answer that later... if so sorry to bother! haha!

Solder a treble bleed capacitor on the left and center lug of your volume pot to maintain high frequencies as you roll down the volume. A 500pf cap is a good value for single coils and medium output humbuckers. It works wonders when you are competing with 2 other guitar players.

Does this relate/work with solid state amps? I have a fender mustang V.2 been trying to figure all of this out with it, actually.

absolutely. your gain is your preamp and your volume is your power amp

I have the same amp. To clarify what he meant was that he has a gain conrol and a volume(to control preset volumes) on the preamp section and a master volume on the power amp. I found that I got more variety by putting my gain at 5(going lower removes the crunchiness and bite of the sound used in rock, might need to go higher if you want metal) , preamp volume is fairly low then master volume is at 5(I use the mustang II so it's quite loud, before I learned this I use to set it to 2 or 3 then preamp volume at 10) then if I go to middle pickup at guitar volume 1-4 it's clean, I then transfer to bridge position then up the guitar volume to get the classic rock sound if I go higher on my guitar volume I am in the realm of 2000 rock alternative/punk rock

I don‘t get it how people like this explanation. He never takes the time to clearly explain how the movable parts of the drawings match to the actions you take in your guitar or amplifier. He has all the elements but is just not didactic enough. What a missed opportunity.
