You could think about talking through different volume/energy strategies while working on a song. Like volume levels between song sections, and how does that affect the listener. Maybe with examples from different genres, too! We all know that it's up to the taste in the end and guidelines are loose, but I guess there are always people wondering over "should my chorus be 3dB louder than the verse to hype it up?" and stuff like that 😅

Thx for your video. Due to the logarithmic scale of the dB and the faders I use at the last stage of every channel one utility plugin more to control the volume over time instead of moving the faders. First I simply let the faders on 0 dB and make the mix with the utility plugins and at the end I finaly move the volume faders to make fine adjustments. I have much more freedom of movement of the fader and it will not affect the volume as much as allready low positioned faders. Hope this makes sense :D Best regards.

I think DECAP debunked this. Clipping is fine with ableton devices. It doesnt change the audio in ableton. You can just use Utility to turn down the master at the end. No need to make sure stuff is green

That depends. If the device does any kind on nonlinear processing, input levels matter. However, if your input signal to your master bus is too loud you can indeed just turn it down with a Utility. Well, unless you somehow managed to exceed the range of a 64 bit floating point number, which is... unlikely.

It’s a good practical thing to have cause it the professional way to work, gain staging is for working with non linear effect important (like hardware recreation or real hardware). And it’s very important to compare the fx you had gain to gain. Our ear always think louder is better. If you want to boost a volume, use the fader.

hmm, well I think you may have missed the point. You don’t actually clip if you are able to turn down the master, but if you are clipping on all of your tracks being sent to the master then turning the master down you’re probably going to end up with a muddy and quiet mix.
@Max91199
@Max91199 2 жыл бұрын
@@LakeManship no thats literally the point. in ableton the faders can be as red as you want, they will not actually clip. watch the decap video about it.

@@Max91199 no i did. yes it doesn’t clip if you turn it down on the master but you’re also sending all the signals to the master and turning them down in sync. this will not lead to a full and loud mix.

Question: Is this the same as adding a limiter to your master track to avoid clipping? At the advice of someone I know who also uses Ableton, I added a limiter and put it at -70 db in the mastering track, is this a good option? Some of the individual tracks like bass and drums turn red/clip without the limiter. With the limiter however, nothing turns red/clips. I also just want to say that I've binged your videos since I discovered you about two weeks ago, I'm loving all your content and I know you got all the information I need covered in your videos and descriptions, I feel like I don't have to worry about anything when I'm watching your videos and very few people make me feel like that! You're doing an absolutely amazing job with these tutorials and I'm so grateful!

@@DavidBoura Hmm I don't know haha? I put the limiter in the mastering track and then set the ceiling at -70db, is that bad?

@@girlfromthecenteroftheuniv6045 Not technically, but also technically lol probs not the best way to go about it. Just turning the gain down would be a better choice as you are making up for something that could just be avoided. - You don't need to have your limiter working that hard just turn down the gain instead- the more your plugins are working the harder your cpu is going to be working
