In this lecture we explore human gait and locomotion. We begin by defining gait, define gait cycle, and understanding different phases and events in gait cycle. Gait can be defined as translatory progression of body as a whole produced by coordinated rotatory movements of body segments. What is gait cycle? A gait cycle is the time period or sequence of events during locomotion in which one foot contacts the ground to when the same foot contacts ground again.
A gait cycle is divided into two phases namely- stance phase and swing phase. The stance phase accounts for 60% of gait cycle whereas the swing phase accounts for 40% of gait cycle. The stance phase of gait cycle involves a period of Single limb support and double limb support time. Further the stance phase is made of various events and the events in stance phase are:
1. Heel strike or Initial contact
2. Foot flat
3. Heel off
4. Toe- off
The video describes each of this phase in detail with demonstrations and recorded gait analysis.
